Karl Lagerfeld<\/a><\/strong> has passed away at the age of 85.<\/p>\n

Chanel announced<\/a> the fashion designer’s death on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

“It is with deep sadness that the House of Chanel announces the passing of Karl Lagerfeld, the creative director for the Chanel Fashion House since 1983,” Chanel said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, the fashion legend was missing<\/a>\u00a0from Chanel’s Paris Fashion Week<\/a> shows. At the time, the brand said that Lagerfeld was “feeling tired” and had requested that Virginie Viard<\/strong> fill in for him.<\/p>\n

In 1955, Lagerfeld began his career by winning a design competition for his sketch of a coat. He was then hired to be an assistant for Pierre Balmain<\/strong>, who also produced the award-winning jacket.<\/p>\n

Lagerfeld reached icon status<\/a> as the creative director for Chanel and Fendi.<\/p>\n

He also partnered with brands including H&M, Macy’s and Hogan to create highly-successful collections.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

Outside of fashion, the creative director designed minimalist glassware for Orrefors and produced\u00a0Visionaire 23: The Emperor’s New Clothes,<\/em>\u00a0a series of nude pictures of models and celebrities. He also wrote a diet book,\u00a0The Karl Lagerfeld Diet<\/em>, after losing more than 90 pounds.<\/p>\n

Artist Beginnings<\/h3>\n

Karl Lagerfeld<\/strong> was born in 1933 in Germany. At 14, he\u00a0moved to Paris and studied drawing and history.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Becoming an Icon<\/h3>\n

Lagerfeld was named the\u00a0creative director of Chanel in 1983, only a decade after Coco Chanel<\/strong> died and only five years after the label’s first ready-to-wear collection. He remained with the brand until his death on Feb. 19, 2019.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Lagerfeld also become a costume designer for Callas Forever<\/em> as well as productions of Les\u00a0Troyens\u00a0by Hector Berlioz<\/em> at Milan’s La Scala theatre,\u00a0Kom\u00f6die der Verf\u00fchrung\u00a0<\/em>by Arthur Schnitzler at the Burgtheater in Vienna and\u00a0Der Schwierige\u00a0by Hugo von Hofmannsthal<\/em> at the Salzburg Festival.
