And then there were the controversies of varying severity attached to almost all of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1005886\/oscars-2019-nominations-see-the-complete-list\" target=\"_blank\">Best Picture nominees<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But while we know which show, musical or variety, should be in the running for best drama at the Emmys, was Hollywood&#8217;s biggest night able to salvage itself and provide the reliable assortment of big moments that make the Oscars worth watching? Here is what stood out, for better or worse:\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-2\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"60.5\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"11\">\n<p><strong>1. What a Ride:<\/strong>\u00a0The Producers Guild of America win should&#8217;ve been a hint, but this\u00a0awards season has been\u00a0<em>so<\/em>\u00a0all over the place that prognosticators were having a tough time putting all their eggs in one basket.\u00a0Actually, most did, and they were wrong. <em>Green Book<\/em>\u00a0drove right past a tidy heap of controversies\u2014and right through <em>Roma<\/em>, for that matter\u2014to win Best Picture in the night&#8217;s final twist.<\/p>\n<p>But not the biggest twist&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-3-img\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"31\">\n<div class=\"post-content__image\" readability=\"32\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image--full\" src=\"https:\/\/akns-images.eonline.com\/eol_images\/Entire_Site\/2019124\/rs_1024x759-190224201321-1024-olivia-coleman--winner-oscars-2019.jpg?fit=inside|900:auto&amp;output-quality=90\" border=\"0\" title=\"Olivia Colman, 2019 Oscars, 2019 Academy Awards, Winners\" alt=\"Olivia Colman, 2019 Oscars, 2019 Academy Awards, Winners\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"759\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"image__credits\">Rob Latour\/REX\/Shutterstock<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-3\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"42\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"24\">\n<p><strong>2. The Actual Favorite:\u00a0<\/strong>Just when it seemed as if\u00a0<em>The Favourite<\/em> was going to have the honour of joining the tiny illustrious club of films that have gone 0-for-10 at the Oscars, especially after <em>Green Book<\/em>&#8216;s upset in the Original Screenplay category, <strong>Olivia Colman<\/strong> swooped in out of awards-season nowhere and made off with Best Actress.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s genuinely quite stressful&#8230;this is hilarious!&#8221; the thrillingly emotional and genuinely surprised Colman, not quite able to get her speech going right away, charmingly began, promising anyone she proceeded to forget to thank a &#8220;massive snog&#8221; when she found them later.<\/p>\n<p>Which means\u00a0<strong>Glenn Close<em>\u2014<\/em><\/strong>winner of the Golden Globe, SAG Award and Independent Spirit Award for\u00a0<em>The Wife\u2014<\/em>remains the most nominated actor never to have won an Oscar yet. <em>Yet<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Glenn Close, you&#8217;ve been my idol for so long and this is not how I wanted it to be,&#8221; Colman assured her, &#8220;and I think you&#8217;re amazing. Live Oscar Aid:\u00a0<\/strong>As perhaps a much-needed reminder that the original intention of\u00a0<em>Bohemian Rhapsody\u00a0<\/em>was pure, to honor the life of <strong>Freddie Mercury\u00a0<\/strong>and the seminal band <strong>Queen<\/strong>, founding members <strong>Brian May\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Roger<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Taylor\u00a0<\/strong>and frequent\u00a0frontman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/adam_lambert\">Adam Lambert<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0opened the show with a rousing medley of &#8220;We Will Rock You&#8221; and &#8220;We Are the Champions&#8221; that had everyone from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/lady_gaga\">Lady Gaga<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/allison_janney\">Allison Janney<\/a><\/strong> to Glenn Close and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/javier_bardem\">Javier Bardem<\/a><\/strong> rocking out within the show&#8217;s first minute.<\/p>\n<p>Obvious? Yes. Thoroughly enjoyable? Yes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-6\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"60.405555555556\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"19.366666666667\">\n<p>Another extremely smart production move? Having\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/tina_fey\">Tina Fey<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/amy_poehler\">Amy Poehler<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/maya_rudolph\">Maya Rudolph<\/a><\/strong>\u2014perhaps the three most-mentioned names when it comes to the &#8220;why don&#8217;t they host everything?&#8221; discussion\u2014come out to open the show (&#8220;welcome to the 1 millionth Academy Awards!&#8221; Fey exclaimed) and present Best Supporting Actress.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the presenters\u00a0were relied upon to up the humor game, and for the most part they did, from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/melissa_mccarthy\">Melissa McCarthy<\/a><\/strong> and <strong>Brian Tyree Henry<\/strong> coming out in\u00a0<em>Favourite<\/em>-inspired, rabbit-covered finery to honor costume design and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/awkwafina\">Awkwafina<\/a><\/strong> and <strong>John Mulaney<\/strong> fan-girling and-boying over\u00a0being\u00a0<em>at<\/em> the\u00a0<em>Oscars<\/em>. (Though their presence on Hollywood&#8217;s biggest night sure makes more sense than, say, a horse in a hospital.)<\/p>\n<p>Then it was up to Best Picture presenter Julia Roberts to close the show, which she did with a goodnight to her kids and\u2014because of course\u2014<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/bradley_cooper\">Bradley Cooper<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s mom.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-7-img\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"31\">\n<div class=\"post-content__image\" readability=\"32\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image--full\" src=\"https:\/\/akns-images.eonline.com\/eol_images\/Entire_Site\/2019124\/rs_1024x759-190224194849-1024-spike-lee.cm.22419.jpg?fit=inside|900:auto&amp;output-quality=90\" border=\"0\" title=\"Spike Lee, 2019 Oscars, 2019 Academy Awards, Winners, Samuel L. The Right Stuff:\u00a0<\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/spike_lee\">Spike Lee<\/a><\/strong> had been vocally waiting for this moment for 30 years\u2014he makes no bones about feeling the Academy has made a few mistakes here and there\u2014so he\u00a0made sure to make up for lost time when he finally won his first Oscar, Best Adapted Screenplay for <em>Black KkKlansman<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>After sharing an enthusiastic hug with presenter <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/samuel_l_jackson\">Samuel L. Jackson<\/a><\/strong>, Lee\u2014dressed in purple and wearing a necklace sporting <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/prince\">Prince<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s signature symbol\u2014noted that it&#8217;s been 400 years since &#8220;our ancestry was stolen from mother Africa, and brought to Jamestown, Virginia, enslaved.&#8221; He paid tribute to his grandmother, whose mother was a slave, saving her Social Security checks to help put him through college and NYU\u00a0Film School.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;NYU!&#8221; he exclaimed.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-8-img\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"31\">\n<div class=\"post-content__image\" readability=\"32\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image--full\" src=\"https:\/\/akns-images.eonline.com\/eol_images\/Entire_Site\/2019124\/rs_1024x759-190224192722-1024-spike-lee-winner-oscars-2019.jpg?fit=inside|900:auto&amp;output-quality=90\" border=\"0\" title=\"Spike Lee, 2019 Oscars, 2019 Academy Awards, Winners\" alt=\"Spike Lee, 2019 Oscars, 2019 Academy Awards, Winners\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"759\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"image__credits\">Kevin Winter\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-8\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"36\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"12\">\n<p>&#8220;If we all connect with our ancestors, we will have love, wisdom, we&#8217;ll regain our humanity,&#8221; Lee concluded, getting to the end of a speech written on a sheaf of yellow note\u00a0paper. &#8220;It&#8217;ll be a powerful moment. The 2020 presidential election is around the corner. Let&#8217;s all mobilize, let&#8217;s all be on the right side of history, make the moral choice between love versus hate. Let&#8217;s do the right thing! Mr. Oscar Winner:\u00a0<\/strong>Whatever critics thought of\u00a0<em>Bohemian Rhapsody<\/em>, and whatever occurred behind the scenes,\u00a0most moviegoers loved it\u2014and that wouldn&#8217;t have happened if\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/rami_malek\">Rami Malek<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s all-in performance as Freddie Mercury hadn&#8217;t convinced and moved them.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To the Academy, to the people who took a chance on me\u2026 thank you guys, so much,&#8221; Malek said onstage. &#8220;I may not have been the obvious choice but I guess it worked out. Thank you, Queen, thank you guys for allowing me to be the tiniest part of your phenomenal, extraordinary legacy. Deep Track:\u00a0<\/strong>The show\u00a0broke formula when it came time for Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper to perform Best Original Song nominee (and, incidentally, the eventual winner) &#8220;Shallow,&#8221; to great effect. Instead of having another celebrity come on and introduce the performance, as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/kacey_musgraves\">Kacey Musgraves<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>Keegan-Michael Key\u00a0<\/strong>and others did for their fellow nominees, the intro started as Gaga&#8217;s piano and a stool for Cooper to sit on were set up on stage, and then the <em>A Star Is Born<\/em> co-stars\u00a0ascended the stage from their seats.<\/p>\n<p>And it was good.<\/p>\n<p>Cooper may have been robbed of a Best Director nomination, but here&#8217;s hoping he got a nice, long look at that standing ovation.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-11-img\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"31\">\n<div class=\"post-content__image\" readability=\"32\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image--full\" src=\"https:\/\/akns-images.eonline.com\/eol_images\/Entire_Site\/2019124\/rs_1024x759-190224195237-1024-hannah.cm.22419.jpg?fit=inside|900:auto&amp;output-quality=90\" border=\"0\" title=\"2019 Oscars, 2019 Academy Awards, Winners, Hannah Beachler, Jay Hart \" alt=\"2019 Oscars, 2019 Academy Awards, Winners, Hannah Beachler, Jay Hart \" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"759\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"image__credits\">Kevin Winter\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-11\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"52.5\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"45\">\n<p><strong>7. A Heroic Showing:\u00a0<\/strong>Though it didn&#8217;t win the night&#8217;s biggest prize,\u00a0<em>Black Panther<\/em> still made history. <strong>Ruth E. Carter<\/strong>,\u00a0whose big break came working on\u00a0<strong>Spike Lee<\/strong>&#8216;s\u00a0<em>Do the Right Thing<\/em> 30 years ago and was previously nominated for his <em>Malcolm X<\/em>\u00a0(Lee stood up happily when she gave him a shout-out)\u00a0won her first Oscar in three tries for Best Costume Design, and Best Production Design winner <strong>Hannah Beachler<\/strong>\u00a0was the first African-American\u00a0<em>ever\u00a0<\/em>to be nominated in the category. She shared the win with set decorator <strong>Jay Hart\u00a0<\/strong>and gave the rawest\u00a0speech of the night, shaking with emotion throughout as she read her speech off of her iPhone.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I stand here stronger than I was yesterday, I stand here with agency and self-worth because of [director]\u00a0<strong>Ryan Coogler<\/strong>,&#8221; Beachler said,\u00a0&#8220;who not only made me a better designer, a better story teller, a better person. I stand here because of this man who offered me a different perspective of life, who offered me a safe space, who&#8217;s patient and gave me air, humanity and brotherhood. Thank you, Ryan, I love you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>(Runner-up in rawness goes to <strong>Melissa Berton<\/strong>, a winner for Best Documentary Short for <em>Period. End of Story<\/em>, who said, &#8220;I&#8217;m not crying because I&#8217;m on my period or anything.&#8221; And second runner-up goes to\u00a0<strong>Jimmy Chin<\/strong>, co-director of Best Documentary Feature winner\u00a0<em>Free Solo<\/em>, who started his speech off with, &#8220;Oh, s&#8211;t!&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ludwig G\u00f6ransson<\/strong>, a buddy of Coogler&#8217;s from USC film school, is having a very good month, having just won a Grammy for Song of the Year for co-writing <strong>Childish Gambino<\/strong>&#8216;s\u00a0&#8220;This Is America.&#8221; Now he&#8217;s an Oscar winner, too, earning Best Original Score for <em>Black Panther.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-12-img\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"31\">\n<div class=\"post-content__image\" readability=\"32\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image--full\" src=\"https:\/\/akns-images.eonline.com\/eol_images\/Entire_Site\/2019124\/rs_1024x759-190224173452-1024-melissa-mccarthy-bryan-tyree-henry-oscars-2019-show.jpg?fit=inside|900:auto&amp;output-quality=90\" border=\"0\" title=\"Melissa McCarthy, Brian Tyree Henry, 2019 Oscars, 2019 Academy Awards, Show\" alt=\"Melissa McCarthy, Brian Tyree Henry, 2019 Oscars, 2019 Academy Awards, Show\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"759\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"image__credits\">Kevin Winter\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-12\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"38.5\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"17\">\n<p><strong>8. No Spontaneous Combustion:\u00a0<\/strong>There was so much tsuris leading up to the 2019 Oscars that it was hard to imagine what it was going to look like when the night finally arrived, as if disaster was imminent. As it turned out&#8230;the 91st Academy Awards looked a lot like all the other ceremonies in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>And if you stayed off Twitter, it may have been a little satisfying, or even delightful at times. There were some rough spots, including some awkward play-off moments and speeches that appeared to still be going on even as the camera zoomed out.
