History was made, several times, at the\u00a02019 Oscars<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The ceremony set the record for the most individual black winners,\u00a0noted the Los Angeles Times<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

Black Panther<\/em> won a total of three Oscars.\u00a0The movie is the first Marvel film, and superhero movie overall, to be nominated for Best Picture. Black Panther<\/em> was nominated for a total of seven Oscars.\u00a0Ruth E. Carter<\/strong> became the first black person\u00a0to win Best Costume Design for her work on the film, marking the first Oscar win for Marvel.\u00a0Hannah Beachler<\/strong>\u00a0then became the first black person to win Best Production Design for her work on\u00a0Black Panther<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Actor Mahershala Ali<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0also made history at the 2019 Oscars, as did the makers of the film\u00a0Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

Seven black winners won in six categories, breaking a record set in 2017. One of them was Spike Lee<\/strong>, who lost out to Best Directing for\u00a0BlacKkKlansman<\/em>,\u00a0but did win Best Adapted Screenplay.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Most Diverse Winning Actors<\/h3>\n

Regina King<\/strong> won Best Supporting Actress for If Beale Street Could Talk<\/em> and\u00a0Mahershala Ali<\/strong>\u00a0won Best Supporting Actor for\u00a0Green Book<\/em>.\u00a0Rami Malek<\/strong>,\u00a0born to\u00a0Egyptian immigrants, won Best Leading Actor for\u00a0Bohemian Rhapsody<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Ruth E. Carter Wins Best Costume Design<\/h3>\n

She made history by becoming the first black person to win Best Costume Design, for her work on\u00a0Black Panther<\/em>. Her win also marked the first Oscar won by Marvel Studios.<\/p>\n

In 1993, Carter became the first black person to be nominated in the category, for her work on Malcolm X<\/em>. She was nominated again in 1998, for\u00a0Amistad<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Black Panther<\/em> Is Nominated for Best Picture<\/h3>\n
