Katherine Helmond<\/strong>, who starred on the\u00a0sitcoms\u00a0Soap<\/em> and\u00a0Who’s the Boss?<\/em>\u00a0 in the ’80s and ’70s, has died at age 89.<\/p>\n

The Emmy-nominated actress, known for her sultry voice, red hair and sense of humor, passed away at her Los Angeles home on February 23 from complications of Alzheimer’s disease, APA Agency announced on Friday, according to Deadline<\/a>. She is survived by her\u00a0second husband of\u00a0more than five decades years, David Christian<\/strong>. She had no children.<\/p>\n

Helmond, a native of\u00a0Galveston, Texas and an only child, began her onscreen acting career in the mid-’50s. After appearing\u00a0on various TV shows for two decades, she landed her breakout role of Jessica Tate on the soap opera parody sitcom\u00a0Soap<\/em>, which aired between 1977 and 1981. She also reprised her role on episodes of its spinoff,\u00a0Benson<\/em>. In 1984, she began playing man-crazy mom and grandmother Mona Robinson on the sitcom\u00a0Who’s the Boss?<\/em> opposite Tony Danza<\/strong>,\u00a0Judith Light<\/strong> and a teen\u00a0Alyssa Milano<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

“I was in love with her,” Danza told Deadline on Friday. “She was such an influence on me. From being a single guy with a hit show in Hollywood, though my marriage and having kids\u2014she was with me. No matter what problem I had, I could go to her. Very few people could match her.”<\/p>\n

“She was a consummate professional\u2014never made a mistake and always got the laugh,” he added. “She was the sexy older lady who could keep up with the young people. She just had a way about her.”<\/p>\n

Milano tweeted<\/a>, “Katherine Helmond has passed away. My beautiful, kind, funny, gracious, compassionate, rock. You were an instrumental part of my life. You taught me to hold my head above the marsh! You taught me to do anything for a laugh! What an example you were! Rest In Peace, Katherine.”<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

In the ’90s, Helmond played Doris Sherman on the comedy series\u00a0Coach<\/em>. She also starred as\u00a0Lois Whelan on\u00a0Everybody Loves Raymond<\/em>. In 2006, she provided the voice of Lizzie on Disney-Pixar’s\u00a0Cars<\/em> and reprised her role in two sequels. In 2011, she had a small part on the HBO vampire drama series\u00a0True Blood<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Helmond also appeared in three Terry Gilliam<\/strong> movies: Time Bandits<\/em>, Brazil<\/em>, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Helmond was nominated four Emmys for\u00a0Soap<\/em>, two for\u00a0Who’s the Boss?<\/em> and one for\u00a0Everybody Loves Raymond<\/em>. She won a Golden Globe for Soap<\/em> and one for\u00a0Who’s the Boss?<\/em><\/p>\n

Helmond was also a Tony-nominated Broadway star; In 1973, she was nominated for Best Supporting or Featured Actress (Dramatic) for her role in the Eugene O’Neill<\/strong> play The Great God Brown<\/em>.\u00a0She also appeared in the Broadway plays Private Lives<\/em>, Don Juan<\/em> and Mixed Emotions<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n
