Luke Perry<\/a><\/strong>, star of\u00a0Riverdale<\/em> and a former\u00a0Beverly Hills, 90210<\/em> heartthrob, has died at age 52 after suffering a stroke<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The actor passed away on Monday morning, E! News has confirmed. He was surrounded by his children Jack<\/strong> and Sophie<\/strong>, fianc\u00e9 Wendy Madison Bauer<\/strong>, ex-wife Minnie Sharp<\/strong>, mother Ann Bennett<\/strong>, step-father Steve Bennett<\/strong>, brother Tom Perry<\/strong>, sister Amy Coder<\/strong>, and other close family and friends.<\/p>\n

“The family appreciates the outpouring of support and prayers that have been extended to Luke from around the world, and respectfully request privacy in this time of great mourning,” his rep tells E! News in a statement.\u00a0“No further details will be released at this time.”<\/p>\n

Perry is survived by two children, son\u00a0Jack\u2014a wrestler who goes by the name\u00a0“Jungle Boy” Nate Coy, and daughter\u00a0Sophie, from his marriage to\u00a0Sharp.<\/p>\n

Perry, who hails from Fredericktown, Ohio, was born Coy Luther Perry III<\/strong>. He\u00a0moved to Los Angeles after high school to pursue acting. He spent two years there before moving to New York, where he lived for three years and appeared on a season of the soap opera\u00a0Loving<\/em> in 1988.<\/p>\n

Perry, who hated his boss, then moved back to Los Angeles, according to the Washington Post<\/a><\/em>. There, he worked in a doorknob factory, laid asphalt, and starred in commercials for jeans and candy bars while auditioning for traditional acting roles.<\/p>\n

He\u00a0appeared on the soap opera\u00a0Another World<\/em>\u00a0a couple of years before landing his breakout role; In October 1990, on his 24th birthday, the actor made his debut\u00a0as\u00a0teen heartthrob and bad boy Dylan McKay on the series\u00a0Beverly Hills, 90210<\/em>, where his character romanced Brenda, played by Shannen Doherty<\/a><\/strong>, and her BFF Kelly, played by\u00a0Jennie Garth<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0The show achieved cult status and ran for 10 seasons.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

“After the pilot, we felt there should be someone who is a little dangerous, a little on the edge, and we came up with the Dylan character,”\u00a0late\u00a0series\u00a0producer\u00a0Aaron Spelling<\/a><\/strong> told Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a> in 1992.<\/p>\n

“When Luke walked into the audition, it was like ‘Wow, that’s the person,'” creator\u00a0Darren Star<\/strong> told the magazine.\u00a0“He seems exactly like James Dean<\/strong> to me, but it isn’t a conscious imitation\u2014he’s really being himself.”<\/p>\n

The show made Perry a household name and a pinup; He earned a\u00a0memorable reference in the movie\u00a0Clueless<\/em> and the tabloids linked him romantically to\u00a0Madonna<\/a><\/strong>. (The two did meet in 1991 when he presented the pop queen with the Award of Courage at\u00a0an American Foundation for AIDS Research benefit. He declined comment<\/a> about her a year later.)<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

In 1992, he starred opposite\u00a0Kristy Swanson<\/strong> in the movie\u00a0Buffy the Vampire Slayer<\/em>, which later inspired a hit series neither actor was\u00a0part of.<\/p>\n

Swanson and Doherty both paid tribute online to Perry<\/a> on Thursday after news of his stroke was made public.<\/p>\n

Also in the 1990s, Perry did some voice acting, portraying characters on shows such as Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm<\/em> and Biker Mice From Mars<\/em>. In 1994, the actor played 1987 PRCA Bull Riding World Champion Lane Frost<\/strong>\u00a0in the movie 8 Seconds<\/em>.<\/p>\n

In the early 2000s, Perry starred on the short-lived post-apocalyptic series Jeremiah\u00a0<\/em>and also played the recurring role of Reverend Jeremiah Cloutier on the HBO prison series\u00a0Oz<\/em>. In 2005, he reunited with Garth on a few episodes of her sitcom\u00a0What I Like About You<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Over the next few years, he would go on to appear on shows such as Windfall<\/em>, John From Cincinnati<\/em>, Criminal Minds<\/em>, Law & Order: SVU<\/em>, FCU: Fact Checkers Unit<\/em>, Body of Proof<\/em>, Hot in Cleveland<\/em>, and Ties That Bind<\/em>.<\/p>\n

In 2015, Perry had a cancer scare after a colonoscopy revealed precancerous growths.\u00a0He then became an advocate for the group Fight Colorectal Cancer campaign.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

For the past two and a half years, Perry has played Archie’s father, Fred Andrews, on the hit CW series\u00a0Riverdale<\/em>. Some of his co-stars from the show also paid tribute to him<\/a> after hearing about his stroke.<\/p>\n

The actor\u00a0recently filmed a role in Quentin Tarantino<\/a><\/strong>‘s film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood<\/em>, which also stars actors such as Leonardo DiCaprio<\/a><\/strong>, Brad Pitt<\/a><\/strong>, Al Pacino<\/a><\/strong>, Kurt Russell<\/a><\/strong>, Margot Robbie<\/a><\/strong>, Dakota Fanning<\/a><\/strong>, Rumer Willis<\/a><\/strong>, and Damian Lewis<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n
