News on Monday that the 38-year-old has agreed to pay five years of rent for <strong>Matthew Charles<\/strong>, a former inmate who was denied housing after being granted clemency. Charles posted the happy news <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/profile.php?id=100015700506052&amp;fref=search&amp;__tn__=%2Cd%2CP-R&amp;eid=ARA1Ag10V5pqOBvw5Ih4T6FbpTqorjOJwWxZqfYgW6vneKW0uqxfQvqQ2Jv0Kw2mr2C2OQNUm2JsZVTb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to Facebook<\/a> and revealed that Kardashian &#8220;heard about my situation&#8221; and was &#8220;moved&#8221; by it. She then decided to help him out in an &#8220;unbelievable&#8221; way.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Kim did not do this for attention or publicity, but I had to share it, because it&#8217;s to good not to, and my heart is about to burst with happiness, that I wish you to rejoice in this news with me,&#8221; Charles wrote on the social media platform. &#8220;THANK YOU KIM KARDISHIAN-WEST and TRACY FOR THE LOVE SHOWN TO ME WHEN I WAS LOCKED UP. AND NOW THAT I&#8217;M FREE.. MY HEART IS ENLARGED.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to the <em>Nashville Tennessean,&nbsp;<\/em>Charles was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/story\/news\/crime\/2019\/01\/03\/matthew-charles-prisonrelease-first-step-act\/2473316002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">released on Jan. 3<\/a> as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.firststepact.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a part<\/a> of President <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/donald_trump\">Donald Trump<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s First Step Act.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-2\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"58.533031088083\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"14.04792746114\">\n<p>He was initially sentenced to 35 years in prison in 1996 due to drug trafficking charges. He was released in 2016 for a brief period of time due to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/111th-congress\/senate-bill\/1789\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fair Sentencing Act<\/a> which &#8220;eliminates the five-year mandatory minimum prison term for first-time possession of crack cocaine.&#8221; The law also increases the amount of crack cocaine &#8220;required for the imposition of mandatory minimum prison terms for trafficking.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Charles ultimately returned to prison in 2018 after an appeals court overturned a judge&#8217;s initial ruling on letting him go.<\/p>\n<p>In the months following Charles&#8217; release, he reportedly has been staying with a friend and has been working. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nashvillepublicradio.org\/post\/after-state-union-spotlight-matthew-charles-goes-full-time-criminal-justice-reform#stream\/0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">even attended<\/a> the State of the Union in February. His application for an apartment complex, however, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/story\/news\/2019\/03\/08\/matthew-charles-released-prison-clemency-struggles-find-nashville-housing\/3103611002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">denied on March 7<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-3\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"60.889328063241\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"18.735177865613\">\n<p>Kardashian&#8217;s assistance is just the latest in her lengthy criminal justice reform r\u00e9sum\u00e9. On Jan. 28, the KKW Beauty founder traveled to Sacramento, Calif. where she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/shows\/kardashians\/news\/1009597\/kim-kardashian-heads-to-california-capitol-for-criminal-justice-reform\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lobbied for reform<\/a> in the State Capitol building. Assemblyman Kevin McCarty said in a statement, &#8220;Ms. Kardashian West&#8217;s visit to the state Capitol was to advocate for criminal justice reforms, and issues related to women who are incarcerated.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She even shared a picture on Twitter from the big day and called it &#8220;great.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Kardashian also became one of the&nbsp;loudest and most influential voices on behalf of&nbsp;<strong>Alice Johnson<\/strong>, who was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. She was reportedly a first time nonviolent drug offender, and Kardashian went to great lengths to ensure Johnson received clemency. Kardashian traveled to Washington, D.C. in May&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/941864\/donald-trump-grants-alice-johnson-clemency-after-meeting-with-kim-kardashian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">where she met with President Trump<\/a>&nbsp;and felt &#8220;very inspired,&#8221; a source said at the time. Johnson and Kardashian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/shows\/kardashians\/news\/944046\/kim-kardashian-and-alice-johnson-meet-face-to-face-i-love-this-woman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">finally met face-to-face<\/a> about a week later in Alabama. They <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/976164\/kim-kardashian-reunites-with-pardoned-inmate-alice-johnson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reunited again<\/a> in October.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It became this mission that I just didn&#8217;t want to give up,&#8221; Kardashian explained during a&nbsp;<em>Today<\/em> interview with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/hoda_kotb\">Hoda Kotb<\/a><\/strong>.
