The creator and executive producer of <em>Grey&#8217;s Anatomy<\/em> defended the medical drama&#8217;s depiction of a rape kit being administered in the Thursday, March 28 episode of the series titled &#8220;Silent All These Years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1027874\/grey-s-anatomy-reveals-jo-s-family-history-in-heartbreaking-and-beautiful-episode\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the episode<\/a>, Jo (<strong>Camilla Luddington<\/strong>) meets her birth mother (<strong>Michelle Forbes<\/strong>), and learns why she gave her up all those years ago: Jo was a product of rape. She was sparked by the arrival of a trauma patient (<strong>Khalilah Joi<\/strong>) at Grey Sloan. Jo eventually convinced Abby to have a rape kit administered and that&#8217;s where notes came down from ABC&#8217;s standards and practices department.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-2\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"58.48275862069\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"9.7471264367816\">\n<p>&#8220;We received notes initially from ABC&#8217;s broadcast standards and practices. They give these standard notes: \u2018don&#8217;t be too gory&#8217;; \u2018don&#8217;t be too explicit in your language&#8217;; \u2018no side boob.&#8217; But the ones we got on this script included, \u2018Please don&#8217;t show any fluid on the Q-tips&#8217; and \u2018Please don&#8217;t show any body fluids under the blue lights,'&#8221; showrunner <strong>Krista Vernoff<\/strong> told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/live-feed\/greys-anatomy-how-shonda-rhimes-fought-abc-powerful-consent-episode-1197667\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>. &#8220;Shonda wrote back a pretty passionate response of the myriad ways that networks are willing to show actual violence but that what we were doing here was the medical process that happens in the wake of violence and they were trying to tell us we couldn&#8217;t show it. She said, \u2018Respectfully, I decline these notes.&#8217;\u2026Ultimately ABC understood that she was right. I really give them credit that they came back and said, \u2018You&#8217;re right. You can proceed as scripted.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-3\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"61.803486529319\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"13.955625990491\">\n<p>After the exchange, Vernoff and her team extended an invite to the broadcast standards and practices executive to be part of the wall of women who came together to protect and honor Abby\u2014and she came.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From the moment the script was published, there was a big reaction to it at Shondaland. Everybody was blown away. We started having people come up and ask if they could be in that scene,&#8221; Vernoff told <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/tv\/2019\/03\/28\/greys-anatomy-sexual-assault-hallway-scene-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EW<\/a>. &#8220;The women in that hallway are almost all the women on the writing staff. Many of the women are on the crew, or they are assistants at Shondaland, or they are women who work at ABC. I think there were more than 100 women.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-4\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"61.5\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"13\">\n<p>The episode came with a warning to viewers, which was a request of Vernoff.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We requested it and ABC watched episode and agreed with us.
