The following month, he was charged with staging the incident himself and filing a false police report. He pleaded not guilty.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1026845\/jussie-smollett-s-criminal-charges-dropped-in-attack-case\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">prosecutors dropped all charges against Smollett<\/a>, spurring outrage from Chicago police and even President&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/donald_trump\">Donald Trump<\/a><\/strong>, who the actor has spoken out against.<\/p>\n<p>On&nbsp;Friday, several honors were announced at the&nbsp;2019 NAACP Image Awards dinner in Los Angeles. Smollett, who flew to the city earlier this week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1014776\/jussie-smollett-among-2019-naacp-image-awards-nominees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">was nominated for&nbsp;Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series<\/a> for his role on&nbsp;<em>Empire<\/em> and lost to&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/jesse_williams\">Jesse Williams<\/a><\/strong> from&nbsp;<em>Grey&#8217;s Anatomy<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/jussie-smollett-skips-naacp-image-awards-chicago-prosecutor\/story?id=62053753\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ABC News<\/a> reported. More awards will be presented at a televised NAACP Image Awards ceremony on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/anthony_anderson\">Anthony Anderson<\/a><\/strong>, who returns as host for the sixth consecutive year, had told <em><a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2019\/scene\/news\/naacp-image-awards-host-anthony-anderson-hopes-jussie-smollett-wins-1203174190\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Variety<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;he hoped Smollett would attend the event and also win the award.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m happy for him that the system worked for him in his favor because the system isn&#8217;t always fair, especially for people of color,&#8221; he added. &#8220;So I&#8217;m glad it worked out for him. It&#8217;s not my place or any other person&#8217;s place to judge him or what not, but I&#8217;m glad the he&#8217;s nominated\u2026I hope he wins because I&#8217;d be interested to hear his speech.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-2\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"56.741721854305\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"14.41059602649\">\n<p>Had he attended the dinner, it would not have marked&nbsp;the first time the actor has attended a public event since he reported the alleged attack&nbsp;to&nbsp;Chicago police. In February, he performed a scheduled concert at Los Angeles&#8217; Troubadour club, where he talked about his ordeal, saying he fought his attackers. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1011084\/jussie-smollett-jokes-he-s-the-gay-tupac-in-emotional-first-appearance-since-attack\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">He also joked<\/a> he was &#8220;the gay <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/tupac\">Tupac<\/a><\/strong> [<strong>Shakur<\/strong>].&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Later that month, just before he was charged for allegedly staging the incident, he made&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1015022\/jussie-smollett-tears-up-as-he-shares-horrifying-details-of-his-attack\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">his first onscreen appearance<\/a>&nbsp;since the reported attack, giving an interview to&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/robin_roberts\">Robin Roberts<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;on&nbsp;<em>Good Morning America<\/em>. We live in a society where, as a gay man, you are considered somehow, to be weak, and I&#8217;m not weak. I am not weak. And we, as a people, are not weak.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1027246\/jussie-smollett-s-attorney-addresses-his-dropped-charges-and-future-plans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chicago authorities are unhappy<\/a> with the prosecutors&#8217; decision to drop the charges against Smollett. The City of Chicago is demanding he pay&nbsp;$130,000&nbsp;to cover the&nbsp;cost of the&nbsp;investigation into his case.&nbsp;Smollett has until Thursday to pay, and if it&#8217;s not on time, the city can sue him in&nbsp;civil court for up to three times the damages, <a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.cbslocal.com\/2019\/03\/29\/jussie-smolletts-attorney-contributed-money-to-kim-foxxs-campaign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CBS Chicago<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>Trump&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/1111214993293357056\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tweeted<\/a>&nbsp;on Thursday morning, &#8220;FBI &amp; DOJ to review the outrageous Jussie Smollett case in Chicago. It is an embarrassment to our Nation!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Chicago Mayor <strong>Rahm Emanuel<\/strong> told WGN Radio that Trump should&nbsp;&#8220;just sit this one out,&#8221; according to the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/local\/politics\/ct-met-emanuel-smollett-costs-recovery-20190328-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chicago Tribune<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Cook County State&#8217;s Attorney <strong>Kim Foxx<\/strong>&nbsp;had recused herself from the investigation of Smollett. State records show that the actor&#8217;s&nbsp;attorney, <strong>Patricia Brown Holmes<\/strong>, had contributed $1,250 to her campaign between 2015 and 2018.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>in an op-ed in the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/opinion\/commentary\/ct-perspec-kim-foxx-jussie-smollett-20190329-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chicago Tribune<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;on Friday, Foxx defended her office&#8217;s decision to drop the charges against Smollett.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Since it seems politically expedient right now to question my motives and actions, and those of my office, let me state publicly and clearly that I welcome an outside, nonpolitical review of how we handled this matter,&#8221; Foxx wrote.&nbsp;&#8220;I am not perfect, nor is any other prosecutor out there, but ensuring that I and my office have our community&#8217;s trust is paramount.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;First, falsely reporting a hate crime is a dangerous and unlawful act, and Smollett was not exonerated of that in this case,&#8221; the op-ed continued. &#8220;Second, our criminal justice system is at its best when jails are used to protect us from the people we rightly fear, while alternative outcomes are reserved for the people who make us angry but need to learn the error of their ways without seeing their lives irrevocably destroyed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1027753\/jussie-smollett-skips-naacp-image-awards-and-loses-in-his-category-after-charges-are-dropped?cmpid=rss-000000-rssfeed-365-topstories&#038;utm_source=eonline&#038;utm_medium=rssfeeds&#038;utm_campaign=rss_topstories\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via:: E!
