Brad Pitt<\/a><\/strong> and Angelina Jolie<\/a><\/strong> eventually got to the point where they had been divorcing for longer than they were actually married<\/a>. They got to that point last October.<\/p>\n

But all things must end at some point, and a bifurcated judgment handed down last week finally rendered the actors <\/strong>officially single<\/a> (and Angelina legally just Jolie, rather than Jolie-Pitt), closing the book on one volume of this surprisingly long saga, though the entire story has yet to be written.<\/p>\n

Still, though there’s more to be figured out between the two before they can be considered legally divorced, being in this spot is so much better than where they were in 2016, or even just a few months ago, when they were on the verge of going to trial<\/a> over child custody.<\/p>\n

“There’s a sense of relief,” a source tells E! News about the latest development in the Jolie-Pitt divorce. “It’s progress in the right direction. They both want to move on with their lives and were in agreement that this step should happen\u2014there was no reason not to do this.”<\/p>\n

Yet, technically, it’s not over.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

Earlier this month, another source told E! News<\/a> that Pitt was “doing the best he can to work” with Jolie.<\/p>\n

“They’ve both decided to try and put their differences aside and to do whatever they can to raise the kids in the healthiest environment possible. Anger and spite has finally started to take a backseat and they’re figuring things out.”<\/p>\n

“He just wants to have a relationship with the kids and to make joint decisions on what’s important,” the insider added. “They’re both willing to come to the table to talk things through, and that has been a major step in the right direction.”<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

So, there are still those hopefully enduring arrangements to be made and papers to sign that will grant Jolie and Pitt the respective scenarios they envision, or something close enough to it. <\/p>\n

“They will continue to iron out custody and financial settlements,” the initial source told us this week after the judgment, “but restoring single status was mutually agreed upon. The divorce process has been emotionally draining and stressful.<\/p>\n

“It’s been a long and grueling few years, and they want to get on with their separate lives. They both feel that can continue to happen now.”<\/p>\n

Despite the fact that there hasn’t been a photo of Pitt and Jolie taken together for three years (no harmonious, look-how-we-all-get-along Instagram posts\u2014or any Instagram posts\u2014for those two), seemingly an indicator that their lives are very separate already, they have remained in a wait-and-see-what-the-other-is-doing, act-and-react limbo since Jolie filed for divorce on Sept. 19, 2016.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

Jolie’s initial request for full custody and a brief investigation<\/a> into Pitt’s conduct during an argument with son Maddox <\/strong>aboard a private plane while the family was flying from London to Los Angeles shadowed the first few months of their shocking-no-matter-what-the-circumstances breakup after two years of marriage and more than 11 years together.<\/p>\n

After Pitt was cleared, every step forward\u2014Maddox and his dad working on their relationship, Pitt traveling to Cambodia<\/a> to be near the kids while Jolie was there promoting a film, Pitt and Jolie talking again<\/a> (first just through their lawyers and, eventually, to each other), his first major reappearance<\/a> in public, her first TV interview<\/a>, his first post-split magazine cover<\/a>, then her<\/em> first post-split magazine cover<\/a>\u2014was a major development as the unfortunately dramatic breakup careened toward its inevitable conclusion, a legal divorce.<\/p>\n

Instead, they put the proceedings, not quite on hold, but on the back burner while they tended to their family’s needs, the emotional well-being of Maddox, Zahara<\/strong>, Shiloh<\/strong>, Pax<\/strong>, Knox<\/strong> and Vivienne<\/strong> trumping all else and prompting Jolie, as she recalled to Vanity Fair<\/em>, to do her crying in the shower alone<\/a> so as not to traumatize them further. To help maintain the air of normalcy amid the huge upheaval there were trips to Whole Foods, movie nights and sushi dinners, while Jolie has also called upon her no-longer-estranged father<\/a>, Jon Voight<\/a><\/strong>, for support.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

It was Pitt’s life that became far more unrecognizable<\/a> right after the split, as Jolie moved with the children into a rental home in Malibu and he took off for a friend’s house, where he sculpted to the strains of sad music. He later revealed to GQ Style<\/em> that he also got busy getting sober, and had embraced therapy to help break through all the emotional barriers he had instinctively built up around himself, making effective communication with his wife eventually impossible.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

“I’m much better at covering up,” he told the magazine. “And it’s hit me smack in the face with our divorce: I gotta be more. I gotta be more for them. I have to show them. And I haven’t been great at it.”<\/p>\n

Because he wasn’t going out at first, dating rumors remained at bay, but once he did resume his social life, the are-they-dating speculation soon followed. He was linked to everyone from Kate Hudson<\/a><\/strong>, Sienna Miller<\/a><\/strong> and Jennifer Lawrence<\/a><\/strong> to Charlize Theron<\/a><\/strong>, Elle Macpherson<\/a><\/strong> and MIT professor Neri Oxman<\/strong>, some of whom were already seriously involved with other people. Since she was rumored to have been hooking up with Pitt, Hudson has welcomed a daughter<\/a> with Danny Fujikawa<\/strong>, and Oxman (who when rumored to be Pitt’s love interest actually seemed the most likely candidate of the bunch so far) married a hedge fund manager in January and was expecting her first child this spring.<\/p>\n

Lawrence, who’s now engaged to Cooke Maroney<\/strong>, had heard worse things about herself. On Watch What Happens Live <\/em>last year<\/a>, she said she had met Pitt exactly once, in 2013, so the rumor was “very random. But,” she added, “I also wasn’t, like, in a huge hurry to debunk it.”<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

Meanwhile, sources told E! News on multiple occasions that Pitt was dating casually, but there was no news to speak of on the romantic front for him.<\/p>\n

The internet collectively gasped<\/a> a year ago, however, when Jennifer Aniston<\/a><\/strong>and Justin Theroux<\/a><\/strong>revealed they had separated<\/a>, but sources assured that the Brad-and-Jen ship had indeed sailed 13 years beforehand. Pitt’s friendship with his first ex-wife\u2014which primarily consisted of the occasional text message and kind word\u2014has remained strong enough, though, that he made the guest list for Aniston’s 50th birthday party<\/a> in February. (As did Gwyneth Paltrow<\/a><\/strong>, who’s remarried now, or else she too would surely be in the maybe-now<\/em>-is-their-time boat.)<\/p>\n

“Someone extended the invitation to Brad to come to Jen’s party and he accepted,” a source explained to E! News. “He wanted to support Jen and it was a momentous occasion. But that’s the extent of it. It was a social evening with a lot of people who have been a part of her life. They definitely aren’t dating or on that path. They are friendly, but that’s it.”<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

In addition to not reuniting with Aniston, another thing Pitt is not doing is getting back together with Jolie. <\/p>\n

The delay in their divorce proceedings of course prompted speculation\/hope\/disbelief that maybe they were trying to work it out, but working on their relationship\u2014something they needed to do for the kids’ sake\u2014didn’t translate to a desire to repair their marital relationship. They may have needed to wait a beat, but the divorce is moving forward.<\/p>\n

Pitt’s primary focus has been getting back into and remaining in his kids’ good graces, and, since he at first was only granted supervised visits, his road back to normalcy was more arduous than some. Bit by bit, more time was spent together and Jolie purchased a house near their former family home, where Pitt still lives. In the summer of 2017 she called the move “a big jump forward for us,” adding, “we’re all trying to do our best to heal our family.”<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

As recently as November, though, they were not seeing eye to eye<\/a> as far as the kids were concerned, so much so that there was a very real possibility that they’d end up in court<\/a>, their family’s fate left up to a judge.<\/p>\n

With that deadline looming, the warring sides did arrive at a confidential custody agreement out of court, albeit a temporary one.<\/p>\n

“While some progress has been made, this isn’t an ideal situation for Brad,” an insider told us at the time. “There’s an arrangement in place but it’s not a permanent agreement, and there’s a long road ahead.”<\/p>\n

“All Brad cares about is the kids, they’re his number one priority and he’s focusing on them.”<\/p>\n

Another source shared, “Brad is hoping the worst is behind them and that they can move on from the fighting and painful past. He knows in the long run the kids are best with both their mom and dad in the picture. He can now move forward and try be a stable and constant positive influence in their lives.”<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

That is the path Pitt has stuck to since. <\/p>\n

He spent his 55th birthday with the kids<\/a> in December, which, after a few major holidays spent away from them was “a huge deal for Brad and something he has wanted for a long time,” a source said. “It was the first time they had spent the night [at his house] and meant the world to him. It was a great birthday present and he’s looking forward to spending holiday time with them in the coming days.” (As part of their November agreement, Jolie and Pitt made respective holiday plans with the children.)<\/p>\n

A source told E! News in March that he and Jolie had been continuing with weekly therapy sessions and were “both working to come to a more civil and productive place so that the best interests of the kids can be served.”<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

For Pitt, who took issue with Jolie including the kids in her 2017 Vanity Fair <\/em>interview, he “always wanted the kids to be raised in the most private setting possible,” the insider said last month. “He’s never been a fan of parading them around public places or red carpets.” As for Jolie, the source added, she felt as though the kids were old enough (they’re between 10 and 17 now) to decide for themselves if they wanted to be out and about or not. (She and Pitt used to take the kids to age-appropriate film premieres and events together, but she has been the only one taking them to events since they split up.)<\/p>\n

Looking at the judgment entered in L.A. Superior Court on April 12, there is no disclosed time frame in which to expect any issues still hanging over their heads to be resolved.<\/p>\n

But Pitt’s near-future calendar is starting to come into focus, and it could be packed.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

Though most film actors’ public vs. private schedules ebb and flow depending on if they have a movie coming out or not, Pitt has not been on your average press tour since before the initial divorce filing.<\/p>\n

He appeared at some events for Allied<\/em>, the espionage thriller he made before the split but which premiered in American theaters in November 2016, and was involved in setting up Moonlight<\/em> for awards-season success. In fact, presenting clips of the film at the Golden Globes in January 2017 was his first televised public appearance since the split\u2014and though he wasn’t at the Oscars to witness the most shocking twist ever<\/a> as it unfolded, his Plan B Entertainment had yet another Best Picture winner under its belt.<\/p>\n

His press build-up to the premiere of his Netflix film War Machine<\/em> in May 2017 was similarly limited, but by then he had done his GQ Style<\/em> interview and was busying himself with quirky, endearing side gigs, such as appearing on The Jim Jeffries Show<\/em> as the Weatherman and asking “Big Questions With Even Bigger Stars”<\/a> on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

For the most part, he has been cherry-picking events that matter to him\u2014benefits<\/a>, musical events, book releases, old friends’ birthday parties, etc.\u2014and not over-extending himself before duty calls. He has also spent time<\/a> with his late friend Chris Cornell<\/strong>‘s kids, Pitt having been as shocked and saddened as anybody<\/a> by the Sound Garden<\/strong> rocker’s suicide in 2017. At a tribute concert in January, Pitt introduced a performance by Cornell’s daughter, Toni<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Plan B, meanwhile, had another great year with Beautiful Boy<\/em>, prompting Pitt to make a surprise appearance at the Hollywood Film Awards<\/a> in November to honor the film’s director, and the Oscar- and Golden Globe-winning Vice <\/em>and If Beale Street Could Talk<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Yet when the going got rough, for himself and for Hollywood in general<\/a>, Pitt largely kept his nose to the grindstone\u2014and the fruits of all the acting work he’s been doing over the past two years will finally be ready for public consumption in 2019.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

Whether Pitt is ready for that same level of public consumption remains to be seen but, for starters, the sci-fi mystery Ad Astra<\/em>, in which he plays an astronaut alongside Tommy Lee Jones<\/strong>, Ruth Negga<\/a><\/strong>and Donald Sutherland<\/a><\/strong>, is due out May 24. But the even bigger proverbial red carpet will be rolled out for Quentin Tarantino<\/a><\/strong>‘s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood<\/em>, in which Pitt plays the longtime stunt double of a ’60s-era action hero played by Leonardo DiCaprio<\/a><\/strong>, whose character also happens to be a neighbor of a young actress named Sharon Tate<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Everyone’s going to be talking about it, the list of stars is long and expectations will be high, as Once Upon a Time<\/em>, in theaters July 26, also happens to be Tarantino’s first movie since 2015’s The Hateful Eight<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Pitt, who was in Paris last month, was spotted with DiCaprio in February checking out the art at the Frieze exhibit at Paramount Studios. A source said the actors were sharing some laughs and each appeared to be in a great mood. Pitt was heard telling people he was doing “really well” and had “a lot of projects” coming up. <\/p>\n

Now, for the first time in years, he heads into his future legally single, the end of this unexpectedly long trip<\/a> he’s been on finally in sight.  <\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n
