The all-out entertainment assault began with the premiere of <em>Avengers: Endgame<\/em>, a cinematic feat 10 years in the making. Then Taylor Swift came along,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1035943\/don-t-panic-there-s-no-me-without-brendon-urie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">with the help of<\/a> <strong>Panic! at the Disco<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Brendon Urie<\/strong>, to drop her first single in two years, &#8220;ME!&#8221; on the very same day.<\/p>\n<p>Consider the Infinity Stone gauntlet thrown&#8230;except there was yet <em>another<\/em> contender for pop culture conversation dominance: HBO&#8217;s <em>Game of Thrones<\/em>, which aired its (and TV&#8217;s) biggest episode ever on Sunday night, featuring the long-awaited Battle of Winterfell&nbsp;as its final season heads into the home-stretch.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-2\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"63.5\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"17\">\n<p><s>Christmas<\/s> Swiftmas came early and consider your birthday already celebrated because really, it doesn&#8217;t get much better than this; it was hard to focus on social media, trying to divide our attention equally between all of the record-breaking releases. How was Monday not considered a national holiday in order to give people the proper and appropriate amount of time to decompress is beyond us.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But really, between <em>Game of Thrones, Avengers: Endgame<\/em> and Swift, which pop culture giant would come out on top in an entertainment battle royale? Which would dominate the conversation come Monday morning, when the long night finally ended, the endgame was finally revealed and &#8220;ME!&#8221; became E!&#8217;s obsession?&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-4\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"59.5\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"9\">\n<p>Before we fully dive in, let&#8217;s just get this out of the way now:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>SPOILER WARNING!<\/strong> The following contains massive spoilers about ending of <em>Avengers: Endgame<\/em> and <em>Game of Thrones<\/em>&#8216;&nbsp;&#8220;The Long Night.&#8221; Duck on out of here if you&#8217;re the one in 14 million people who has yet to&nbsp;see <em>Endgame<\/em> or forgot to suit up for the Battle of Winterfell, as we will be revealing major plot points from both.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-5\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"38.644204851752\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"20.037735849057\">\n<p><em><u><strong>Avengers: Endgame<\/strong><\/u><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Build-Up:<\/strong> 10 years. 22 films. It all came to this&#8230;with &#8220;a real fanboy&#8221; at the helm in Marvel Studios boss <strong>Kevin Feige<\/strong>, who championed <em>Iron Man<\/em>&nbsp;as the film to take a chance on, with a then-almost-uninsurable <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/robert_downey_jr\">Robert Downey Jr.<\/a><\/strong> as its star, to kick off what would become the MCU way back in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People forget&nbsp;<em>Iron Man<\/em>&nbsp;was an independent movie,&#8221; Feige told <em>Vanity Fair<\/em>. But even then, he had an idea that would end up setting everything up: adding a post-credits scene with a major Easter egg: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/samuel_l_jackson\">Samuel L. Jackson<\/a><\/strong> as S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury, the man behind the Avengers coming together.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After<em>&nbsp;Iron Man<\/em>&#8216;s&nbsp;surprising success, Disney acquired Marvel in 2009, paving the way for the billion-dollar franchise.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-6\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"61.856209150327\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"19.032679738562\">\n<p>The biggest struggle for Feige early on was getting actors to commit longterm to his vision, telling <em>Vanity Fair<\/em> that waiting for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/chris_evans\">Chris Evans<\/a><\/strong> to agree to a six-picture deal was one of the most nerve-wracking experiences of his career. But once Evans and a then-unknown <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/chris_hemsworth\">Chris Hemsworth<\/a><\/strong> signed on (as Captain America and Thor, respectively), his ultimate Avengers plan truly began as he had three of the main players assembled.<\/p>\n<p>And Thanos (played by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/josh_brolin\">Josh Brolin<\/a><\/strong>), the ultimate big bad of this first generation, was first introduced in 2012&#8217;s <em>The Avengers<\/em>, paving the way for his infamous snap years later.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Back in 2017, Feige promised that Endgame, which didn&#8217;t even have an official title yet, would bring &#8220;things you&#8217;ve never seen in superhero films: a finale.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-7\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"42\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"24\">\n<p>He told&nbsp;<em>Vanity Fair<\/em>, &#8220;There will be two distinct periods. Everything before&nbsp;<em>Avengers 4<\/em>&nbsp;and everything after. I know it will not be in ways people are expecting.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Feige wasn&#8217;t lying, with the end of <em>Infinity War<\/em> wiping out half of the population, including major superheroes like Spider-Man, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Peter Quill and more, in the snap heard &#8217;round the world, leaving audiences with their jaws on the popcorn-littered theater floor.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Left standing were the original six Avengers, ready for one much-hyped, long-awaited final mission.<\/p>\n<p>Even before the dust had settled, <em>Endgame<\/em> was breaking pre-sale ticket records in just six hours, according to Fandango.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-8\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"54.706484641638\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"6.5460750853242\">\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve never seen anything like this\u2014it&#8217;s truly a groundbreaking accomplishment\u2014as fans simply cannot wait to see how this epic saga comes to a close,&#8221; Fandango managing editor Erik Davis <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/movies\/2019\/04\/02\/avengers-endgame-box-office-presales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told EW at the time<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But no one knew just how monumental <em>Endgame<\/em> would be after its April 26 release.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-10\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"59.5\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"9\">\n<p><strong>The Records:<\/strong> Consider the box office completely decimated. Like Sokovia after the battle in <em>Age of Ultron<\/em>-level of decimated.<\/p>\n<p>With an estimated global debut of $1.2 billion, Endgame is the first film in history to pass the $1 billion benchmark in its opening weekend. The previous record-holder? Infinity War, which grossed just $640 million back in 2018.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-11\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"40\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"20\">\n<p>To put&nbsp;those insane numbers in&nbsp;perspective: <em>Endgame<\/em> made in just five days what took <em>Infinity Wars<\/em>, the previous-record holder, 11 days to make.<\/p>\n<p>Domestically, it brought in $350 million, a new record that is actually quite poignant, as <em>The Avengers<\/em>, the 2012 film that truly kicked off this era, was the first film to ever break the $200 million barrier. $60 million of that came on Thursday night, which added to its first-day gross (a record $156.7 million).&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s hard to imagine any upcoming film coming even somewhat close to to these numbers, let alone beating them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-12\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"56\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"2\">\n<p>Consider it the end of an era. For the first time in a long time, the immediate future feels uncertain.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-14\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"60.753787878788\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"17.896464646465\">\n<p>What we do know for sure, as in Marvel has officially confirmed their respective releases:&nbsp;<em>Spider-Man: Far From Home<\/em> is set to open in July, bringing Marvel&#8217;s Phase 3 to an end. Given Peter Parker&#8217;s (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/tom_holland\">Tom Holland<\/a><\/strong>) devastating loss at the end of Endgame and his quick-yet-emotional reunion with BFF, it&#8217;s safe to say we will definitely be experiencing some post-snap PTSD with Spidey.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But then what? The only other confirmed sequels are&nbsp;<em>Black Panther 2<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>Doctor Strange 2<\/em>, as well as <em>Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3<\/em> now that director <strong>James Gunn<\/strong> is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1024070\/disney-rehires-director-james-gunn-for-guardians-of-the-galaxy-vol-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">officially back on Star-Lord&#8217;s ship<\/a>. And <em>Captain Marvel 2<\/em> is a given, right?&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A <em>Black Widow<\/em> prequel film was already announced ahead of <em>Endgame<\/em>, and now we know why, given how Natasha Romanoff&#8217;s storyline came to a conclusion in the film.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-15\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"35.66265060241\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"13.493975903614\">\n<p>But Phase 4 is set to introduce some major new characters to the mix, which makes sense seeing as how Marvel has the rights to over 7,000 characters: Fans can expect a <em>Shang-Chi<\/em> movie\u2014the first Marvel movie with an Asian lead\u2014as well as <em>The Eternals<\/em>, with <strong>Angeline Jolie,&nbsp;Kumail Nanjiani<\/strong> and <strong>Dong-seok Ma<\/strong> reportedly set to star in&nbsp;the movie that will take the MCU even further into space.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/io9.gizmodo.com\/marvel-studios-has-a-5-year-phase-4-plan-that-probably-1833888644\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an interview with io9<\/a>, Kevin Feige said Phase 4 was a &#8220;five year&#8221; plan set to kick off in 2020, but he was hesitant to compare it to the groundbreaking phases that came before it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-16\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"60.290697674419\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"11.860465116279\">\n<p>&#8220;The slate that we&#8217;re building over the next five years [is] not apples to apples,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/io9.gizmodo.com\/marvel-studios-has-a-5-year-phase-4-plan-that-probably-1833888644\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">he said<\/a>. &#8220;It is two very distinct things and I hope they&#8217;ll feel very distinct. But there is a similar mentality going into it, which is &#8216;How can we continue to tell stories with some of the characters that audiences already know and love in a unique way, in a different way, in surprising way, of which we have a lot of plans and ideas and work already going into it?&#8217; [Then] &#8216;How can we introduce new characters that even hardcore fans, comic fans, have barely known or barely heard of.&#8217; That&#8217;s really exciting too.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-17-img\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"31\">\n<div class=\"post-content__image\" readability=\"32\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image--full\" src=\"https:\/\/akns-images.eonline.com\/eol_images\/Entire_Site\/2018319\/rs_1024x458-180419092854-1024-ryan-reynolds-deadpool-2-041918.jpg?fit=inside|900:auto&amp;output-quality=90\" border=\"0\" title=\"Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool 2\" alt=\"Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool 2\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"458\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"image__credits\">Marvel \/ 20th Century Fox<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-17\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"38.318965517241\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"16.920062695925\">\n<p>And given Disney&#8217;s recent acquisition of Fox, the X-Men (and&nbsp;<strong>Ryan Reynold<\/strong>&#8216;s Deadpool) are also now in the mix, though the five-year plan was drawn out before the merger.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s much more, for us, less about specifics of when and where [the X-Men will appear] right now and more just the comfort factor and how nice it is that they&#8217;re home,&#8221; Feige told <a href=\"https:\/\/io9.gizmodo.com\/marvel-studios-has-a-5-year-phase-4-plan-that-probably-1833888644\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">io9<\/a>. &#8220;That they&#8217;re all back. But it will be a very long time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But the MCU is officially expanding to the small screen in a major way following the wrap-up of ABC&#8217;s A<em>gents of S.H.I.E.L.D.<\/em> and the cancellation of all of Netflix&#8217;s Marvel series, including <em>Daredevil and Jessica Jones<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-18\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"44.392749244713\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"10.02416918429\">\n<p>Launching in November 2019, Disney&#8217;s new streaming platform, Disney+, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1032100\/disney-guide-what-to-expect-from-marvel-star-wars-and-more#photo-774096\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">will include some very familiar faces<\/a>. In its first year, an <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/anthony_mackie\">Anthony Mackie<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/sebastian_stan\">Sebastian Stan<\/a><\/strong>-fronted <em>Falcon and Winter Soldier<\/em> series is slated, while <em>Loki<\/em> (yes,&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/tom_hiddleston\">Tom Hiddleston<\/a><\/strong> is attached), and&nbsp;<em>WandaVision<\/em>, starring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/elizabeth_olsen\">Elizabeth Olsen<\/a><\/strong>, are set for year two.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-20\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"65\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"20\">\n<p><u><strong>The Emotional Resonance:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p>We knew it was the end of Phase 3. We knew were basically saying goodbye to the original six. But man, we were not prepared for just how emotional it would be.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Natasha sacrificed herself to save the only family she&#8217;s ever known. Tony Stark, the man who once required physical proof that he had a heart, died so that everyone else, including his young daughter and protege Peter, could live. Steve signed off as Captain America on his own terms, living out the life he always dreamed of with Peggy Carter (<strong>Hayley Atwell<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>All were bittersweet happy endings, which each character getting what they&#8217;ve always wanted in a way: Family. Redemption. Love.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-21\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"46.083423618635\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"33.336944745395\">\n<p>&#8220;Her journey, in our minds, had come to an end if she could get the Avengers back,&#8221; screenwriter <strong>Stephen McFeely<\/strong> told <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/04\/29\/movies\/avengers-endgame-explainer.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The New York Times<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;of Natasha&#8217;s death. &#8220;She comes from such an abusive, terrible, mind-control background, so when she gets to Vormir and she has a chance to get the family back, that&#8217;s a thing she would trade for.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As for Tony, the man responsible for this entire empire in the first place, thanks to 2008&#8217;s <em>Iron Man<\/em>, McFeely said, &#8220;Everyone knew this was going to be the end of Tony Stark&#8230;the watchword was, end this chapter, and he started the chapter.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After moving on with Pepper and their daughter after the snap, Tony got his happy ending for five years, with screenwriter <strong>Christopher Markus<\/strong> saying, &#8220;We had the opportunity to give him the perfect retirement life&#8230;it&#8217;s a good death. It doesn&#8217;t feel like a tragedy. It feels like a heroic, finished life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Like Pepper said, he can rest now.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-22\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"60\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"10\">\n<p>Finally, when it came to closing out Cap&#8217;s story, he was always going to get that damn dance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s postponed a life in order to fulfill his duty. That&#8217;s why I didn&#8217;t think we were ever going to kill him,&#8221; McFeely explained. &#8220;Because that&#8217;s not the arc. The arc is, I finally get to put my shield down because I&#8217;ve earned that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-23\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"34.367021276596\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"10.648936170213\">\n<p><em><u><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/game_of_thrones\">Game Of Thrones<\/a><\/strong><\/u><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Build-Up:<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8220;The Long Night,&#8221; episode three of the final season,&nbsp;was easily the most hyped episode of <em>GOT<\/em> ever; the trailer for&nbsp;season eight, which was all about the character preparing for the Great War, shattered records for HBO. Released in March, it had been viewed over 80 million times across all platforms within its first 24 hours.
