Moreover, they&#8217;re moving the nightly news broadcast to Washington, D.C., where O&#8217;Donnell has a home, this fall.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-2\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"60.762063227953\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"13.720465890183\">\n<p>&#8220;Norah is one of the leading journalists of our time. Her outstanding reporting, incisive interviews and dedication to the truth will distinguish the&nbsp;<em>CBS Evening News<\/em> every night,&#8221; CBS News President and Executive Producer <strong>Susan Zirinsky<\/strong> said in a statement announcing the move on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Her ascendance to the evening anchor chair previously occupied by the likes of <strong>Walter Cronkite<\/strong>, <strong>Dan Rather<\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/katie_couric\">Katie Couric<\/a><\/strong>means that she&#8217;ll be only the third woman ever to be the solo anchor of a broadcast network evening newscast. It also means that <strong>Jeff Glor<\/strong>, who has&nbsp;had the job since October 2017, is out.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-3\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"41.479680696662\">\n<div class=\"column post-content__image--left post-content__image\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"32\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image--full\" src=\"https:\/\/akns-images.eonline.com\/eol_images\/Entire_Site\/201946\/rs_1024x1245-190506104646-1024-Jeff-Glor-news-GettyImages-1021928926.jpg?fit=inside|900:auto&amp;output-quality=90\" title=\"Jeff Glor, CBS EVENING NEWS\" alt=\"Jeff Glor, CBS EVENING NEWS\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"image__credits\">Tiffany Walling McGarity\/CBS via Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"23.798798798799\">\n<p>&#8220;We are grateful to Jeff Glor for his award-winning work and his commitment to both his colleagues and to our viewers,&#8221; Zirinsky said. &#8220;As we transition the <em>Evening News<\/em>&nbsp;to Washington, we are discussing opportunities for Jeff to remain with CBS News and continue providing the same substantive, trusted reporting that he has been offering for the past 12 years.&#8221; (Sources&nbsp;told <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2019\/05\/02\/gayle-king-pushes-out-norah-odonnell-at-cbs-this-morning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Page Six<\/a>&nbsp;and the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/05\/05\/business\/media\/cbs-news-gayle-king-norah-o-donnell.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Times<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;last week&nbsp;that the veteran newsman will likely be offered another role at the network. King said Monday on the air that Glor&#8217;s &#8220;conversations, you should know, with CBS News continue, and we all hope very much that he will continue working here; it will be his decision.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>Dickerson, who was their chief Washington correspondent and host of&nbsp;<em>Face the Nation<\/em> before joining&nbsp;<em>CBS This Morning<\/em>, is also headed back to the political beat for&nbsp;<em>60 Minutes&nbsp;<\/em>and the network&#8217;s election coverage.&nbsp;<strong>Anthony<\/strong> <strong>Mason<\/strong>, coming over from&nbsp;<em>CBS This Morning Saturday<\/em>,<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>and CBS News correspondent&nbsp;<strong>Tony Dokoupil&nbsp;<\/strong>are now headed to&nbsp;<em>CBS This Morning<\/em>&nbsp;as King&#8217;s new co-anchors.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2019\/05\/02\/gayle-king-pushes-out-norah-odonnell-at-cbs-this-morning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Page Six reported<\/a>&nbsp;last week that King&nbsp;had given the final nudge that sent O&#8217;Donnell out of the a.m. fold, and that her recent contract negotiation\u2014coming in the wake of her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1021841\/here-s-how-gayle-king-really-felt-during-that-dramatic-r-kelly-interview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lauded&nbsp;interview<\/a> with&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/r_kelly\">R. Kelly<\/a><\/strong>\u2014included the stipulation that O&#8217;Donnell had to go.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-5\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"54.721739130435\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"5.6608695652174\">\n<p>Zirinsky\u2014a 46-year&nbsp;veteran of CBS News (and inspiration for <strong>Holly Hunter<\/strong>&#8216;s producer character in <em>Broadcast News<\/em>)&nbsp;who was promoted to her current role in January&nbsp;in the wake of CBS Chairman&nbsp;<strong>Les Moonves<\/strong>&#8216; scandal-cloaked&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/966737\/les-moonves-resigns-as-ceo-of-cbs-amid-sexual-harassment-allegations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">departure<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/cbs-news-fires-60-minutes-executive-producer-jeff-fager-n908911\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">firing<\/a> of longtime&nbsp;<em>60 Minutes<\/em> executive producer <strong>Jeff Fager<\/strong> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-cbs-david-rhodes\/cbs-news-head-david-rhodes-steps-down-susan-zirinsky-to-take-over-idUSKCN1P108M\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">resignation<\/a> of previous CBS News President&nbsp;<strong>David Rhodes<\/strong>\u2014called a headline stating King had &#8220;pushed&#8221; O&#8217;Donnell out &#8220;offensive and 100 percent false.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-6-img\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"31\">\n<div class=\"post-content__image\" readability=\"32\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image--full\" src=\"https:\/\/akns-images.eonline.com\/eol_images\/Entire_Site\/201946\/rs_1024x759-190506105231-1024-Norah-ODonnell-GettyImages-1126197138.jpg?fit=inside|900:auto&amp;output-quality=90\" border=\"0\" title=\"Norah O\u2019Donnell, CBS This Morning\" alt=\"Norah O&amp;amp;rsquo;Donnell, CBS This Morning\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"759\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"image__credits\">Michele Crowe\/CBS via Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-6\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"40.337284482759\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"22.355603448276\">\n<p>Early last month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-6878059\/Norah-ODonnell-brazenly-trying-seize-CBS-Evening-News-anchor-job-Jeff-Glor.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DailyMail.com<\/a> reported that O&#8217;Donnell was after Glor&#8217;s job and sources called her &#8220;demanding&#8221; and &#8220;divisive.&#8221; A CBS News spokesperson called that characterization &#8220;grossly inaccurate&#8221; and said she was a trusted member of the team.<\/p>\n<p>O&#8217;Donnell&#8217;s agent <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2019\/05\/02\/gayle-king-pushes-out-norah-odonnell-at-cbs-this-morning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told the Post<\/a> this month, in response to reports that O&#8217;Donnell&#8217;s attitude was problematic: &#8220;In her 20-plus year career in news, she&#8217;s become an unquestioned leader in her field.&nbsp;If she was a man, these kind of unsupported accusations would never be reported.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Add the situation at CBS News, or lack thereof, to the list of instances of the behind-the-scenes politicking at a morning show\u2014exaggerated or not\u2014proving more engrossing than the news being reported on camera,&nbsp;to which whole books on the subject, including <strong>Brian Stelter<\/strong>&#8216;s&nbsp;<em>Top of the Morning&nbsp;<\/em>and the brand-new&nbsp;<em>Ladies Who Punch<\/em> by <strong>Ramin Setoode<\/strong>, about the goings-on at&nbsp;<em>The View<\/em>, can attest.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-7\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"40.647727272727\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"23.227272727273\">\n<p><em>Top of the<\/em> <em>Morning<\/em>, which came out in 2013,<em>&nbsp;<\/em>mainly chronicles past drama at NBC and ABC, but CBS&#8217; day in the hot seat was around the corner. At the time, Charlie Rose, Gayle King and Norah O&#8217;Donnell had only been co-anchoring <em>CBS This Morning&nbsp;<\/em>since 2012 (O&#8217;Donnell <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20171127232128\/http:\/\/deadline.com\/2012\/07\/shakeup-at-cbs-this-morning-norah-odonnell-to-replace-erica-hill-as-co-host-307427\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">replaced <strong>Erica Hill<\/strong><\/a>, the only holdover from <em>CBS This Morning&nbsp;<\/em>predecessor&nbsp;<em>The Early Show<\/em>, seven months in), so the main story emanating from CBS back then was only that it was testing out ways to compete more with&nbsp;<em>Today<\/em> and&nbsp;<em>Good Morning America<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>And&nbsp;while they&nbsp;remained primarily in third place, the trio of King, O&#8217;Donnell and Rose proved a winning combination\u2014until Rose&#8217;s prestigious career came to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/895442\/cbs-fires-charlie-rose-following-sexual-harassment-allegations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">screeching halt<\/a> a year and a half ago in the wake of sexual misconduct allegations first reported by the&nbsp;<em>Washington Post<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>With success comes more scrutiny, so it eventually was a toss-up as to which network was having the bigger issue on any given day (though ABC&#8217;s&nbsp;<em>The View<\/em> presumably holds the record for sheer quantity when it comes to reports of discord among the talent).<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-9\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"65\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"20\">\n<p>But despite official assurance&nbsp;that the whispers about O&#8217;Donnell only amount to so much sexist tripe since ambition, even<em>&nbsp;<\/em>in 2019, is still&nbsp;considered a better look for men, there&#8217;s at least no denying now that everyone except King is, in fact, changing jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Hence the&nbsp;<em>CBS This Morning&nbsp;<\/em>team of King, O&#8217;Donnell and Dickerson taking the first opportunity Monday to explain what was happening.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So you might have been reading about all the speculation,&#8221;&nbsp;King began. &#8220;We thought today would be a good day to hear it from the horse&#8217;s mouth.&#8221; King turned to O&#8217;Donnell and Dickerson. &#8220;Hello, horses,&#8221; she quipped.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"html-external-10\" data-type=\"async\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"40\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mqrJfFJIrS8?wmode=transparent\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/p>\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-html-text\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"20\">\n<p>King gave a glowing explanation of O&#8217;Donnell&#8217;s new role, capping it with a clap and, &#8220;bravo, Norah O&#8217;Donnell, bravo.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At CBS News, I don&#8217;t stand on the shoulders of my colleagues,&#8221; O&#8217;Donnell said. &#8220;They carry me on their backs. And so this is a great moment, I think, for all of us at CBS News as Susan Zirinsky has taken the helm.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s the moment we&#8217;ve all been waiting for!&#8221; she added with a smile. &#8220;There&#8217;s been so much speculation about it, but the truth is, a new era begins and it&#8217;s a great era.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-12\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"68.5\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"27\">\n<p>But King, who was out on assignment Friday, also hoped to slam the door on the rumors hard enough to let the new era begin without any baggage. Dickerson and O&#8217;Donnell had assured last week that they would address the chatter when they were all together again on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The news should rarely be about us,&#8221; King continued after all the accolades had been passed around, &#8220;and sometimes what you read isn&#8217;t even true.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>King shook her head and, looking frustrated, said, &#8220;Can I just take a minute to go off-script about that? Here we were Thursday\u2014I know I&#8217;m supposed to stick to the script, but I&#8217;ve just got to say this. Thursday, I&#8217;m flying to London, to do the,&#8221; she waved her hand, &#8220;we&#8217;re working on the prime-time royals special [about Meghan and Harry&#8217;s baby]. [Former <em>Vanity Fair<\/em> and <em>New Yorker<\/em> editor]&nbsp;<strong>Tina Brown<\/strong> summed it up very nicely: she said this never happens to men, this kind of cut-throat business. That the reality is, it&#8217;s two great jobs for two great women, [Brown] said.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Brown had <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TinaBrownLM\/status\/1124302939777060865\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tweeted last week<\/a>, &#8220;The <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GayleKing\">@GayleKing<\/a> v <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NorahODonnell\">@NorahODonnell<\/a>&nbsp;&#8216;feud&#8217; is the usual cat fight trope foisted on powerful women! Both of them got great gigs!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I also think I know that that&#8217;s true,&#8221; King continued. &#8220;I look at Susan Zirinsky, who, if you haven&#8217;t heard outside the building, is a badass in our building. She&#8217;s our new CBS president, and when&nbsp;it was announced she was taking this job in January, she said there&#8217;s going to be some changes&#8230;she&#8217;s going to look at the lay of the land and decide. She could&#8217;ve come in here with a weed-wacker and we&#8217;d all be on 57th Street going &#8216;taxi!&#8217; But what she decided to do is take a look and see what she thought would work best, and what job would suit our role.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You know, this is a business about ratings, and when the ratings don&#8217;t work, they make changes, and so they&#8217;re making changes that they hope will lead to better things.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Now&nbsp;<em>that<\/em> is some truth.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And I believe,&#8221; King concluded, &#8220;I&#8217;m with you, I&#8217;m going to give it 110 percent, too.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-15\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"72.652707581227\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"40.150180505415\">\n<p>O&#8217;Donnell agreed, saying that King and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/oprah_winfrey\">Oprah Winfrey<\/a><\/strong>(who obviously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/895490\/gayle-king-and-oprah-winfrey-s-fierce-bond-how-their-40-year-friendship-has-outlasted-every-rumor-spat-and-scandal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">had to factor into this story<\/a> at some point) had given her some great advice, &#8220;not to listen to those in the cheap seats. It&#8217;s not the critic who counts, and I know you have Oprah, but I want to thank you for being my work BFF. You made me better in everything that I have done.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>King humbly protested,&nbsp;but reiterated, &#8220;You know, we&#8217;ve had a lot of bad press coming from inside the building, which I think is very disturbing to me, because I think most people that work here support, respect, admire each other, cheer each other on. Even going to Washington was Susan Zirinsky&#8217;s idea, not yours\u2014but I think it will make everything better and different. So I am cheering you on and, in the words of <strong>Grace Tracy<\/strong>, your daughter, we all want to crush it like a popsicle.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Appreciative observer Tina Brown <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TinaBrownLM\/status\/1125403681342537728\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tweeted<\/a> Monday, &#8220;Bravo to @NorahODonnell and @GayleKing for getting the golden gigs they deserve! These power ladies held firm and got the big prizes. Look forward to talking Meghan baby tomorrow on the show <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CBSThisMorning\">@<\/a>CBSThisMorning.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/cbs-news-chief-susan-zirinsky-scrambles-to-calm-the-storm-around-gayle-king-norah-odonnell-and-jeff-glor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Daily Beast<\/a> reported last week that Zirinsky had told staffers, &#8220;It&#8217;s hard. I get it, but you have to stay focused.&#8221; And,&nbsp;&#8220;when there&#8217;s something to tell you, I will tell you.
