Because the journey had been so damn enjoyable!<\/p>\n<p>Only nine years removed from a <em>New York Times<\/em> article declaring that &#8220;In Hollywood, Black Is In&#8221; following the release of&nbsp;<em>Do the Right Thing<\/em>,&nbsp;the R-rated tale of friends coming together for a wedding with a&nbsp;<em>You Can&#8217;t Go Home Again<\/em> twist and lots of laughs along the way was a box office hit that also served to remind studios that there was a wildly underserved market&nbsp;for more everyday stories&nbsp;told by black filmmakers and starring black actors.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t ahead of its time\u2014rather, it was both long overdue and followed in some hallowed footsteps, but <em>The Best Man&nbsp;<\/em>did launch careers and help lead to more representation at the multiplex.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-2\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"72.439498703544\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"37.921348314607\">\n<p>So much so that, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popmatters.com\/176404-the-best-man-holiday-and-the-tyler-perry-effect-2495709262.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pop Matters<\/a> pointed out in 2013, <em>The Best Man<\/em> may have started something, but the sequel&nbsp;<em>The Best Man Holiday<\/em>&nbsp;had &#8220;to play catch-up to madwo(man) Madea and the gang,&#8221; referring to the&nbsp;by-then booming entertainment empire presided over by&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/tyler_perry\">Tyler Perry<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hollywood needed to see that we were more than drug dealers and baby mamas,&#8221; <strong>Nia Long<\/strong>, who played maid of honor Jordan, told Brian Raftery for his 2019 book&nbsp;<em>Best. Movie. Year. Ever<\/em>.: <em>How 1999 Blew Up the Big Screen.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/taye_diggs\">Taye Diggs<\/a><\/strong>, the titular best man Harper, said that in the late &#8217;90s he was simply&nbsp;looking to be in movies &#8220;where you just see African American people being people, as opposed to stereotypes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sure enough, <em>The Best Man<\/em> is about regular (albeit really good-looking) people and their careers, their success and failures, their struggles an insecurities, their romantic entanglements and their sex drives.<\/p>\n<p>And though certain aspects of&nbsp;the film firmly&nbsp;root it in the 1990s, the themes\u2014friendship, fidelity, faith, forgiveness and powering through when you feel ready to give up\u2014still resonate 20 years later.<\/p>\n<p>Here are 20 important things to know about&nbsp;<em>The Best Man<\/em>:<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" data-textblock-tracking=\"vertical-gallery\" readability=\"35.859439068394\">\n<div class=\"post-content__image post-content__image--centered\" readability=\"41.5\">\n<div id=\"photo-1042162\" class=\"v-gallery__post \"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1084933\/20-important-things-you-should-know-about-the-best-man?cmpid=rss-000000-rssfeed-365-topstories&amp;utm_source=eonline&amp;utm_medium=rssfeeds&amp;utm_campaign=rss_topstories\" class=\"image--full lazy-load__img js-lazy-load\" data-width=\"877\" data-height=\"650\" data-src=\"https:\/\/akns-images.eonline.com\/eol_images\/Entire_Site\/2019921\/rs_1024x759-191021112139-1024-Spike-Lee-Malcom-D-Lee-LT-102119-shutterstock_editorial_10436533cc-shutterstock_editorial_5633814a.jpg?fit=inside|900:650&amp;output-quality=90\" data-id=\"1042162\" alt=\"Spike Lee, Malcom D. Movie. Year. Ever.&nbsp;<\/em>author Brian Raftery. &#8220;I wasn&#8217;t seeing myself or my friends represented on film. They won&#8217;t know.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Before&nbsp;the audition she drank a bottle of Alize, and&nbsp;couldn&#8217;t figure out why she was still sober. She told her boyfriend to wait in the car, figuring it wouldn&#8217;t take long because she didn&#8217;t have much to show off. When she came in,&nbsp;the other girls were practicing choreographed routines.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All I had was one move!&#8221;&nbsp;Hall exclaimed. But she went in, grabbed a chair, turned around, looked behind her and gave her butt a slap, as planned.&#8221; Producer Sam Kitt&nbsp;had them stop the music and asked her, &#8220;&#8216;Can you do anything else?&#8217; And I said yes and I picked up my jacket and was like, &#8216;Thank you.&#8217; And I left!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She got the role and two days before go-time the choreographer (who managed strippers) warned her that she was going to suck. &#8220;She was totally horrible to me,&#8221; <strong>Terrence Howard<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2013\/11\/14\/244989540\/terrence-howard-sanaa-lathan-dish-on-the-best-man-holiday\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recalled on NPR<\/a> in 2013 in a joint interview with Lathan for <em>The Best Man Holiday<\/em>. &#8220;All the women were!&#8221; Harper<\/a>&nbsp;when he dares to blame her for the content of&nbsp;<em>his<\/em> ripped-from-reality book\u2014including the tidbit about him sleeping with bride-to-be Mia after she found out Lance had cheated\u2014making the rounds ahead of the wedding.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There was a little bit of tension that day, a little bit of indecision,&#8221; Long <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/0110\/features\/i-nlong.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told Black Film<\/a>&nbsp;that she played Jordan as a combination of two of her friends, one who&#8217;s a producer and another who works in public relations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The producer speaks really fast and that&#8217;s her thing,&#8221; she said.&nbsp;&#8220;Over the phone she can tell you 50 things in 30 seconds. And my other girlfriend who works in publicity is just always carrying stuff. She is always moving and has fifty things going on. I just wanted to create a girl who was always doing something and never really took the time out to relax.
