It&#8217;s practically a rite of Hollywood passage for up-and-comers\u2014especially the redheads\u2014and a way of signaling that&nbsp;<em>this&nbsp;<\/em>21-to-30-year-old woman&nbsp;certainly seems to have &#8220;it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Because she just may be&#8230;The Next&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/julia_roberts\">Julia Roberts<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s meant as a compliment, of course. But dangling that crown in front of an actress&#8217; face&nbsp;is also pretty&nbsp;unfair, considering Roberts has starred&nbsp;in some of the most beloved romantic comedies of all time, was for awhile the highest-paid actress in Hollywood, won an Oscar, lights up every screen with her smile and has enjoyed the kind of career longevity that most actors don&#8217;t even bother to dream of, let alone come close to achieving. In fact, the A-list only has, like,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/859898\/the-disappearance-of-the-a-list-why-hollywood-s-inner-circle-will-never-be-the-same\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">six people on it now<\/a>, and Roberts has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/844614\/the-enduring-appeal-of-julia-roberts-how-the-pretty-woman-star-became-the-queen-of-hollywood-and-has-ruled-ever-since\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">never budged<\/a>&nbsp;from the top spot since <em>Pretty Woman<\/em> made her one of the most talked-about stars in the world.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-2\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"63.5\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"17\">\n<p>So it&#8217;s&nbsp;no wonder that people who make movies and who write about movie stars want to clone her, but the consistently unachievable nature of that mission for other actresses has only served to prove that there&nbsp;<em>is<\/em> no &#8220;next Julia Roberts.&#8221; Which is why we&nbsp;officially closed that case on her 50th birthday\u2014and are sending out a reminder Monday, for her 52nd.<\/p>\n<p>First of all,&nbsp;purely semantically, it&#8217;s impossible. Unless there&#8217;s another person named Julia Roberts who is standing in line behind the one we all know, there&#8217;s no <em>next&nbsp;<\/em>one. And thinking existentially, it&#8217;s&nbsp;even more impossible: These women are all uniquely their own people, it isn&#8217;t right to lump individuals into bite-size categories and&nbsp;there&#8217;s no need to cut into Julia&#8217;s Robertsness and pass out pieces of it to other actresses.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-3\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"39.229645093946\">\n<div class=\"column post-content__image--left post-content__image\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"32\"> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image--full\" src=\"https:\/\/akns-images.eonline.com\/eol_images\/Entire_Site\/2014218\/rs_634x1024-140318134737-634.julia-emma-roberts.ls.31814.jpg?fit=inside|900:auto&amp;output-quality=90\" title=\"Julia Roberts, Emma Roberts\" alt=\"Julia Roberts, Emma Roberts\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"image__credits\">Steve Granitz\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"25.456498388829\">\n<p>&#8220;I think it&#8217;s a positive thing because she&#8217;s a really great actress, but yeah, sometimes it can be a little annoying,&#8221; <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/emma_roberts\">Emma Roberts<\/a><\/strong>, who surely knew going in&nbsp;that she would end up compared to her&nbsp;famous aunt at some point (or lots), admitted in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>To be sure, it probably doesn&#8217;t always&nbsp;feel awesome to turn in a great, crowd-pleasing performance and then be rewarded with the question of whether you&#8217;re, at best, just like somebody else. But generally no disrespect was&nbsp;meant to the many, many ladies\u2014from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/sandra_bullock\">Sandra Bullock<\/a><\/strong>, whose breakout role came just a few years after Roberts&#8217;, to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/jennifer_garner\">Jennifer Garner<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/reese_witherspoon\">Reese Witherspoon<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/scarlett_johansson\">Scarlett Johansson<\/a><\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/anne_hathaway\">Anne Hathaway<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/jennifer_lawrence\">Jennifer Lawrence<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/emma_stone\">Emma Stone<\/a><\/strong> and the star&#8217;s own niece<strong>\u2014<\/strong>who&#8217;ve been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/868935\/the-ever-adorable-sandra-bullock-how-her-private-life-has-kept-her-grounded-through-20-years-of-being-america-s-reluctant-sweetheart\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">subject to the comparison<\/a>&nbsp;over the years.<\/p>\n<p>Rather, the frequency with which that phrase has been used&nbsp;says much more about the woman whose name&nbsp;apparently connotes the ultimate in cinematic appeal.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-5\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"67.001227495908\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"35.074468085106\">\n<p>&#8220;She&#8217;s like&nbsp;Julia Roberts,&#8221; <em>The Last Song<\/em> director&nbsp;<strong>Julie Ann Robinson<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/172248\/miley-cyrus-the-next-julia-roberts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told E! News<\/a>&nbsp;in 2010, referring to her film&#8217;s star,&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/miley_cyrus\">Miley Cyrus<\/a><\/strong>. &#8220;I feel Miley can do anything\u2014action, comedy, drama. She&#8217;s got it all.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When I was younger, someone once told me, &#8216;You kind of look like Julia Roberts in profile,'&#8221; <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/meghan_markle\">Meghan Markle<\/a><\/strong>, who counted Roberts among her biggest inspirations as an actor,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.glamour.com\/story\/meghan-markle-10-women-who-changed-my-life\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told&nbsp;<em>Glamour<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;in 2017.&nbsp;&#8220;It was the best compliment of all time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Lamenting the decrease in Roberts&#8217; screen time in the &#8217;00s after&nbsp;<em>Ocean&#8217;s Eleven<\/em>, when she married <strong>Danny Moder<\/strong> and had her three children,&nbsp;various producers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/02\/10\/movies\/10juli.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">talked to the&nbsp;<em>New York Times<\/em><\/a> in 2009 about the Julia Roberts-shaped hole&nbsp;in the&nbsp;Hollywood landscape and whether any actress&nbsp;was capable of filling it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nobody has stepped into the vacuum&#8230;Right now, people are desperate for the heir apparent to be <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/katherine_heigl\">Katherine Heigl<\/a><\/strong>,&#8221; one producer said.<\/p>\n<p>That <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/279022\/katherine-heigl-will-never-be-america-s-sweetheart-and-she-s-perfectly-fine-with-that\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">didn&#8217;t turn out<\/a> quite as those people intended, but the point was that Hollywood was positively cheering Roberts&#8217; return to a big leading role that year in&nbsp;<em>Duplicity<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Julia has a unique ability to be steely, but winsome and lovable all at the same time,&#8221; Universal production president Donna Langley <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/02\/10\/movies\/10juli.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told the&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-6\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"38.398268398268\">\n<div class=\"column post-content__image--left post-content__image\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\"> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image--full\" src=\"https:\/\/akns-images.eonline.com\/eol_images\/Entire_Site\/2017319\/rs_634x1024-170419102835-634.Julia-Roberts-Black-Suit.jpg?fit=inside|900:auto&amp;output-quality=90\" title=\"ESC: Julia Roberts, 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards 2015\" alt=\"ESC: Julia Roberts, 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards 2015\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"image__credits\">Amy Graves\/WireImage<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"19.180509413068\">\n<p>Emphasis on &#8220;unique,&#8221; but the qualities that insiders would espouse as being specific to Roberts never stopped anyone from seeking those qualities out in others\u2014and then speculating on whether those women could match or even exceed Roberts&#8217; appeal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Why is there plenty of room for guys in this business and they don&#8217;t pit them up against each other? It&#8217;s so stupid,&#8221; Bullock <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/868935\/the-ever-adorable-sandra-bullock-how-her-private-life-has-kept-her-grounded-through-20-years-of-being-america-s-reluctant-sweetheart\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">remarked in 1996<\/a>. &#8220;There&#8217;s room for everybody. I think Julia and I should do a film where we make fun of this whole thing, like we&#8217;re not even the leads. They just&nbsp;have&nbsp;an outtake of like a movie premiere where we get into a huge fight or something. The &#8220;next <strong>Michael Jordan<\/strong>.&#8221; &#8220;The&nbsp;next <strong>Lucille Ball<\/strong>.&#8221; &#8220;The next <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/barack_obama\">Barack Obama<\/a><\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/kobe_bryant\">Kobe Bryant<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/lebron_james\">LeBron James<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>Kevin Durant<\/strong>, etc.\u2014all came of age on the court in that &#8220;next M.J.&#8221; shadow.&nbsp;<strong>Lauren Holly<\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/debra_messing\">Debra Messing<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/ellie_kemper\">Ellie Kemper<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/sofia_vergara\">Sofia Vergara<\/a><\/strong> are among the many who&#8217;ve been mentioned in the hallowed &#8220;next Lucy&#8221; conversation that pops up every so often. And, well&#8230;the search continues for the &#8220;next Obama.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But as EW.com <a href=\"http:\/\/ew.com\/article\/2000\/12\/04\/wb-calls-tori-spelling-next-lucille-ball\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pointed out in 2000<\/a>, comparisons to Ball never helped anybody,&nbsp;considering how utterly&nbsp;inimitable she was. And in 2010, Bleacher Report <a href=\"http:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/418614-kevin-durant-will-be-the-next-michael-jordan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">published<\/a> &#8220;Kevin Durant Will Be the Next Michael Jordan&#8221; one week and, <a href=\"http:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/421463-kevin-durant-will-not-be-the-next-michael-jordan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one week later<\/a>, &#8220;Why Kevin Durant Is Not the Next Michael Jordan.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And then, <a href=\"http:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/2705916-the-ghost-of-the-goat-why-there-isnt-a-next-michael-jordan-anymore\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in 2017<\/a>, &#8220;Why There Isn&#8217;t a Next Michael Jordan Anymore.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-10-img\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"31\">\n<div class=\"post-content__image\" readability=\"32\"> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image--full\" src=\"https:\/\/akns-images.eonline.com\/eol_images\/Entire_Site\/2017319\/rs_1024x759-170419103920-1024.Julia-Roberts-red-Carpet.jl.041817.jpg?fit=inside|900:auto&amp;output-quality=90\" border=\"0\" title=\"ESC: Julia Roberts, Red Carpet\" alt=\"ESC: Julia Roberts, Red Carpet\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"759\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"image__credits\">Isa Saiz\/NurPhoto via Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-10\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"47.436537050624\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"35.577402787968\">\n<p>So, as you can see, sometimes it does take awhile to arrive at a&nbsp;theoretically obvious conclusion, so enticing is the idea that lightning will strike twice in the same arena.<\/p>\n<p>The careers of Bullock, Stone, Hathaway, et al. certainly don&#8217;t seem to have suffered from initial comparisons to Roberts,&nbsp;while having a bunch of starlets knocking at her door never seemed to hurt Roberts&#8217; career, either.&nbsp;But&nbsp;having learned&nbsp;when she was&nbsp;barely 21&nbsp;just how dicey the fame-and-success game really is, the&nbsp;veteran star feels for those who have come up in her wake.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was lucky that I made a few movies in a row that people really responded to\u2014not me particularly but the films as a whole were appreciated,&#8221; Roberts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/2012\/04\/sam-kashner-julia-roberts-mike-nichols-cover-story\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told <em>Vanity Fair<\/em><\/a> in 2012. &#8220;Then you have a couple that aren&#8217;t what you think they&#8217;re going to be, and that&#8217;s O.K. You can keep going. People can keep hiring you. But that doesn&#8217;t happen now, and it&#8217;s a pity because it is a way to develop yourself and figure out what kind of actor you are.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile,&nbsp;even&nbsp;<em>the&nbsp;<\/em>Julia Roberts has known what it&#8217;s like to be heralded as the &#8220;next&#8221; person-who-came-before, having fetched her own&nbsp;share of Audrey Hepburn comparisons. (Hepburn, a fan,&nbsp;asked Roberts to accept&nbsp;her SAG Life Achievement Award on her behalf in 1993 when the&nbsp;<em>Breakfast at Tiffany&#8217;s<\/em> star, who died that January, was too ill to attend.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-12\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"61.538461538462\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"17.307692307692\">\n<p>Though there was only one Audrey, Roberts has proved to be similarly timeless.&nbsp;Her influence on Hollywood is secure, as is her status as one of the all-time great contemporary movie stars.
