In fact, avoid eye contact all together.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, if you&#8217;re <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/sarah_jessica_parker\">Sarah Jessica Parker<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;or <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/gisele_bundchen\">Gisele B\u00fcndchen<\/a><\/strong>or <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/hillary_clinton\">Hillary Clinton<\/a><\/strong>, feel free. But if you&#8217;re just some lower-level staffer at&nbsp;<em>Vogue&nbsp;<\/em>or otherwise visiting the venerable fashion publication&#8217;s&nbsp;Manhattan&nbsp;headquarters&#8230;please courteously look away.<\/p>\n<p>That was the word outside the hallowed halls of&nbsp;<em>Vogue<\/em> in 2004, anyway, a year after&nbsp;<em>The Devil Wears Prada&nbsp;<\/em>jolted the publishing world&nbsp;with its scathing portrayal of both the fashion magazine business and the character of&nbsp;&#8220;<em>Runway<\/em>&#8220;<em>&nbsp;<\/em>editor Miranda Priestley\u2014whom most people&nbsp;took to be a thinly veiled take on Wintour. A sleek, silver-haired&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/meryl_streep\">Meryl Streep<\/a><\/strong> would further immortalize the character in the 2006 film.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-2\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"64.026905829596\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"21.342301943199\">\n<p>&#8220;It wasn&#8217;t a one-to-one portrayal,&#8221; author <strong>Lauren Weisberger<\/strong>, who spent 11 months working as Wintour&#8217;s assistant, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/femail\/article-1304528\/Lauren-Weisberger-The-Devil-Wears-Prada-boss-scarier-real-life.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told the&nbsp;<em>Daily Mail<\/em><\/a> in 2010.&nbsp;&#8220;But of course my time at <em>Vogue<\/em> informed the book, there&#8217;s no denying that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ironically, though the book spent six months on the <em>New York Times&nbsp;<\/em>Best Sellers list and the movie rights were optioned immediately, it was Weisberger&#8217;s heroine, Andy Sachs (and therefore Weisberger), who was criticized for coming off as just as much of a snob as anyone at <em>Runway<\/em>, the high-and-mighty Ivy League grad who thought she was too good for the frivolities of the fashion world.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Miranda Priestley, however, came off as kind of a badass.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-3-img\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"31\">\n<div class=\"post-content__image\" readability=\"32\"> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image--full\" src=\"https:\/\/akns-images.eonline.com\/eol_images\/Entire_Site\/20121111\/1024.DevilWearsPrada.mh.121112.jpg?fit=inside|900:auto&amp;output-quality=90\" border=\"0\" title=\"The Devil Wears Prada\" alt=\"The Devil Wears Prada\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"759\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"image__credits\">Barry Wetcher\/Twentieth Century Fox<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-3\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"48.774885145482\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"39.019908116386\">\n<p>And Streep certainly approached the character as a fully formed human being, not just&nbsp;a well-coiffed dragon lady, an &#8220;empty, shallow, bitter woman who has tons and tons of gorgeous clothes and not much else,&#8221; as Weisberger wrote in the book.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8230;wanted a scene where she is without her armor, the unpeeled scene in the hotel room\u2014just to see that face without it protective glaze, to glimpse the woman in the businesswoman,&#8221; Streep <a href=\"http:\/\/variety.com\/2016\/film\/features\/the-devil-wears-prada-turns-10-meryl-streep-anne-hathaway-and-emily-blunt-tell-all-1201802311\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recalled to <\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/variety.com\/2016\/film\/features\/the-devil-wears-prada-turns-10-meryl-streep-anne-hathaway-and-emily-blunt-tell-all-1201802311\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Variety<\/a>&nbsp;<\/em>for the film&#8217;s 10th anniversary in 2016.&nbsp;Having always insisted that she never tried to play Wintour, per se, she channeled a variety of men.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The voice I got from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/clint_eastwood\">Clint Eastwood<\/a><\/strong>,&#8221; the actress, who scored one of her 21 Oscar nominations for her performance, said. &#8220;He never, ever, ever raises his voice and everyone has to lean in to listen, and he is automatically the most powerful person in the room. But he is not funny. That I stole from <strong>Mike Nichols<\/strong>. The way the cruelest cutting remark, if it is delivered with a tiny self-amused curlicue of irony, is the most effective instruction, the most memorable correction, because everyone laughs, even the target. The walk, I&#8217;m afraid, is mine.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Which perhaps goes to show how hard&nbsp;<em>the&nbsp;<\/em>Anna Wintour had to work to ascend to her real-life role running one of the most storied magazines&nbsp;in the world.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-4\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"40.903414195867\">\n<div class=\"column post-content__image--left post-content__image\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\"> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image--full\" src=\"https:\/\/akns-images.eonline.com\/eol_images\/Entire_Site\/201591\/rs_634x1024-151001133242-634.Anna-Wintour-Paris-Fashion-Week.ms.100115.jpg?fit=inside|900:auto&amp;output-quality=90\" title=\"Anna Wintour, Paris Fashion Week\" alt=\"Anna Wintour, Paris Fashion Week\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"image__credits\">Marc Piasecki\/GC Images<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"22.662075298439\">\n<p>Weisberger said she was surprised by a more congenial (albeit still no-nonsense) Wintour, one who opens doors for people, as seen in the 2009 documentary&nbsp;<em>The September Issue<\/em>, about how the delightfully chubby and most important issue of the year is put together. &#8220;I did not see those things when I was there,&#8221; she told the&nbsp;<em>Mail<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was entertainment,&#8221; Wintour, who happened to have attended the same preview screening as Weisberger,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0CyIOWePQa8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told&nbsp;<\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0CyIOWePQa8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">60 Minutes<\/a>&nbsp;<\/em>about <em>The Devil Wears Prada&nbsp;<\/em>in 2009. &#8220;It was not a true rendition of&nbsp;what happens within this magazine.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>No one has ever claimed that Wintour isn&#8217;t a tough boss, perhaps even one who over the years has made people cry and who strikes fear in the hearts of the minions scurrying around&nbsp;to make sure everything is up to her standards. But those same terrified minions are in Wintour&#8217;s orbit because they&#8217;re inspired. Because they want to be a part of the&nbsp;vibrant,&nbsp;taste-dictating world that&nbsp;&#8220;Nuclear Wintour&#8221;\u2014a holdover nickname from her days in charge of&nbsp;<em>British Vogue\u2014<\/em>has created in her 30-plus years&nbsp;atop&nbsp;<em>Vogue<\/em>&#8216;s masthead.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-6\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"62.5\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"15\">\n<p>&#8220;If I&#8217;m such a bitch then they must really be a glutton for punishment, because they&#8217;re still here,&#8221; Wintour&nbsp;noted on&nbsp;<em>60 Minutes<\/em> in reference to the people who&#8217;d worked for her for 15 or 20 years. Simply, &#8220;there&#8217;s on-duty time and there&#8217;s off-duty time&#8221;\u2014and when they&#8217;re on duty, she expects those around her at&nbsp;<em>Vogue<\/em> to be singularly focused, as she is, on the magazine.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If&nbsp;one&nbsp;comes across as sometimes being cold or&nbsp;brusque, it&#8217;s simply because I&#8217;m striving for the best.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-7\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"43.246478873239\">\n<div class=\"column post-content__image--left post-content__image\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"32\"> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image--full\" src=\"https:\/\/akns-images.eonline.com\/eol_images\/Entire_Site\/201741\/rs_634x1024-170501152222-634.Anna-Wintour-Met-Gala-2017.jpg?fit=inside|900:auto&amp;output-quality=90\" title=\"ESC: Met Gala, Anna Wintour, Candids\" alt=\"ESC: Met Gala, Anna Wintour, Candids\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"image__credits\">John Shearer\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"28.162162162162\">\n<p>Rumors&nbsp;started swirling in 2018 that the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/2018_met_gala\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Met Gala<\/a>&nbsp;that May, the annual $30,000-a-ticket, A-list&nbsp;affair that has usurped the Oscars as fashion&#8217;s most important red carpet (again, thanks to Wintour, whom former&nbsp;<em>Vogue<\/em> creative director <strong>Grace Coddington<\/strong>&nbsp;credited with seeing &#8220;the celebrity thing coming before everyone else did&#8221;),&nbsp;would be Wintour&#8217;s last&nbsp;as&nbsp;<em>Vogue&nbsp;<\/em>editor-in-chief and&nbsp;artistic director of Cond\u00e9 Nast, the latter a position she&#8217;s held since 2013.<\/p>\n<p>If true, it was going to be&nbsp;the end of an era. A &#8220;host of stunned sources&#8221;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2018\/04\/02\/is-anna-wintour-out-at-vogue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told Page Six<\/a> that Wintour could leave as early as the summer after her daughter <strong>Bee&nbsp;Shaffer<\/strong>&#8216;s s wedding.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But today, celebrating her 70th birthday, with the 2019 Met Gala now a memory and Bee having been married for a year, Wintour remains at her sleek desk, making the fashion world go round and the pages of&nbsp;<em>Vogue<\/em> flip in anticipation.<\/p>\n<p>While 30&nbsp;years would have been a nice round number at which to call it a day, and every other week print is declared dead, the &#8220;is Anna leaving?&#8221; speculation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecut.com\/2008\/11\/is_anna_wintour_retiring.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">started almost 20 years ago<\/a>&nbsp;and has since&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecut.com\/2008\/11\/is_anna_wintour_retiring.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">amounted to&nbsp;nothing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-9\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"62.631386861314\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"20.080291970803\">\n<p>&#8220;If you go back to when I was a young girl growing up in Britain, and I went for my first job, it was considered a great thing if we reached an audience of 90,000 people with a monthly magazine,&#8221; Wintour <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/style\/article\/anna-wintour-interview\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told CNN&#8217;s Christiane Amanpour<\/a> in April.&nbsp;&#8220;Now we have, I believe, 22 million followers on Instagram alone at <em>Vogue<\/em> US. So we are talking to men and women all over the world &#8230; in so many different ways&nbsp;[and] in a way that we couldn&#8217;t possibly have imagined even 10 years ago, 15 years ago.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But Wintour is closer to the end of her tenure at&nbsp;<em>Vogue<\/em> than she is to the beginning. Coddington, whom Wintour <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessoffashion.com\/articles\/colins-column\/grace-coddington-how-privileged-we-were-to-have-such-crazy-freedom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">called<\/a> &#8220;the heart and soul of the magazine,&#8221; stepped down in 2016 after 28 years as creative director. And in her&nbsp;2012 book&nbsp;<em>Grace: A Memoir<\/em>, she remembered realizing decades beforehand &#8220;how much significance Anna places on willpower trumping feelings.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Wintour wouldn&#8217;t have risen to where she is without being relentlessly poised, tough as nails and capital-D Decisive\u2014and she&#8217;s hardly the only head honcho who doesn&#8217;t want to chit-chat in the elevator.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-12\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"60.728989037759\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"17.88915956151\">\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m very driven by what I do,&#8221; she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0CyIOWePQa8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told&nbsp;<em>60 Minutes<\/em>&#8216; <strong>Morley Safer<\/strong> in 2009<\/a>, in response to some of the choice descriptors she&#8217;s been called over the years, including &#8220;Darth Vader in a Frock.&#8221; &#8220;I am certainly very competitive. What else am I\u2014needy? Probably very needy, yes. A bitch? Um, well, I&#8230;&#8221; she smiled, thinking. &#8220;I hope I&#8217;m not. I try not to be. But I like people who represent the best of what they do, and if that turns you into a perfectionist then maybe I am.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Maybe because she&#8217;s simply more comfortable shedding her armor these days after being at the&nbsp;pinnacle of her profession for so long, the smile&nbsp;she flashed readily&nbsp;in&nbsp;<em>The September Issue<\/em> has been making a lot more public appearances&nbsp;in recent years. (She has Starbucks every morning, she doesn&#8217;t drink alcohol,&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/hugh_jackman\">Hugh Jackman<\/a><\/strong> is her favorite action star, you&#8217;ll never catch her in head-to-toe black, her favorite vacation spot is home and all the rumors about her are true.)<\/p>\n<p>She was revealed as the comedy mastermind behind <em>Saturday Night Live&nbsp;<\/em>and&nbsp;<em>Seinfeld<\/em> in a brilliant bit on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cFM6APo0h8U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Late Night With Seth Meyers<\/em><\/a>, where daughter Bee used to work as a segment producer. In 2016 she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5Av3ZKrDxKM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">swapped lives<\/a>&nbsp;with <em>Vogue&nbsp;<\/em>cover girl <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/amy_schumer\">Amy Schumer<\/a><\/strong> for a day and did a set at the Comedy Store. If anyone&#8217;s going to understand a&nbsp;powerful&nbsp;woman who&#8217;s set in her ways\u2014it&#8217;s the queen of England.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-15\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"34.5\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"9\">\n<p>Wintour rises at 5 a.m. and loves to both play and watch tennis as often as possible. In addition to her weekend home in Mastic, N.Y., on Long Island, she owns a historic four-story townhouse in Greenwich Village. She&#8217;s been sporting the same bob haircut with thick bangs since at least the 1980s\u2014the &#8220;Anna bob&#8221; is obviously an institution. (Though the magazine business has changed a lot over the past decade,&nbsp;<em>60 Minutes<\/em> reported that Cond\u00e9 Nast&nbsp;picked up the tab for her&nbsp;makeup and those impeccable blowouts&nbsp;every day of the week.) Wintour attended their 2005 wedding at Mar-a-Lago.<\/p>\n<p>But Trump presumably had more recent slights in mind when he <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/946401576381505536?tfw_site=TheCut&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thecut.com%2F2017%2F12%2Fdonald-trump-tweets-anna-wintour-vanity-fair.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tweeted in December 2017<\/a>,&nbsp;&#8220;Vanity Fair, which looks like it is on its last legs, is bending over backwards in apologizing for the minor hit they took at Crooked H. Anna Wintour, who was all set to be Amb to Court of St James&#8217;s &amp; a big fundraiser for CH, is beside herself in grief &amp; begging for forgiveness!&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-20\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"32.914522058824\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"8.5863970588235\">\n<p>We can guess, but it will forever be unclear whether the president indeed made a mistake in implying Wintour was the editor of&nbsp; fellow&nbsp;Cond\u00e9 Nast publication&nbsp;<em>Vanity Fair<\/em>, which ended up <a href=\"http:\/\/ew.com\/news\/2017\/12\/28\/vanity-fair-apologizes-hillary-clinton-knitting-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">apologizing for a misfire<\/a>&nbsp;of a&nbsp;video in which a few staffers suggested Hillary Clinton take up knitting in her free time, or if Trump was knowledgeably singling her out because she&#8217;s also a Cond\u00e9 Nast executive. (As for the rest, there had been talk that Wintour would have been in consideration for an ambassadorship to&nbsp;the U.K. if Clinton had won.)<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-22\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"62.089480048368\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"20.696493349456\">\n<p>Wintour&#8217;s political convictions haven&#8217;t wavered since, the editor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1035276\/what-happened-to-melania-trump-s-model-life-her-relationship-with-the-media-and-her-aversion-to-the-spotlight\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">prompting a&nbsp;slam from the East Wing<\/a> when she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/style\/article\/anna-wintour-interview\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told Amanpour<\/a>&nbsp;in April, regarding the lack of a plan to feature the current first lady on the cover of&nbsp;<em>Vogue<\/em>, that while she&nbsp;strived&nbsp;to be fair,&nbsp;&#8220;I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s a moment not to take a stand. I think you can&#8217;t be everything to everybody, and I think it is a time that we live in a world, as you would well know, of fake news and stretching\u2014to be kind, let me say stretching of the truth. Is she not doing as&nbsp;<em>good<\/em>&nbsp;a job? It&#8217;s easy to try to beat someone down. But anyone who&#8217;d try to do that to&nbsp;<em>her<\/em>&nbsp;would be a fool.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Isaac Mizrahi&nbsp;<\/strong>took an entirely optimistic view of her romance with Bryan, saying, &#8220;She&#8217;s never seemed so giggly and sparkly-eyed and beautiful and happy.
