Fans are getting a sneak peek at Jennifer<\/strong> Hudson<\/strong>‘s portrayal of Aretha Franklin<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The 38-year-old actress and singer was spotted filming the biopic Respect<\/em> in New York on Sunday. <\/p>\n

The American Idol<\/em> alumna threw it back to the \u201860s by rocking a light coat, colorful ensemble and short ‘do for the role. Although, she did wear a pair of modern-day Ugg boots to keep her feet warm. <\/p>\n

The Oscar winner also acted alongside Marlon Wayans<\/strong>, who plays Franklin’s first husband Ted White<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

News of Hudson’s casting broke in early 2018<\/a>. At the time of the announcement, Clive Davis<\/strong> revealed that Hudson had “been anointed by Aretha herself.” <\/p>\n

“Aretha said she wanted Jennifer Hudson to play her, and it’s always been my dream to play Aretha,” Hudson told Ellen DeGeneres<\/a><\/strong> later that year. “And it’s actually happening.”<\/p>\n

While Hudson said she’d “always looked up to Aretha,” she also acknowledged that portraying her would be a “huge task.”<\/p>\n

“Think about it: Like, it’s not just two, three decades of a career. This woman had a lifetime of a career. That’s like 70 years,” the Dreamgirls<\/em> star said. “I cannot even begin to imagine how long it’s going to take to cover.”<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

Franklin died<\/a> of advance pancreatic cancer of the neuroendocrine type in August 2018. She was 76 years old. Hudson sang “Amazing Grace” at The Queen of Soul’s funeral<\/a> and paid tribute<\/a> to the late icon on social media.<\/p>\n

It certainly has been a busy time for Hudson. In addition to working on the movie about Franklin, she also starred<\/a> in the new movie Cats<\/em>, which hits theaters this holiday season.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n
