{"id":283591,"date":"2019-11-14T14:34:37","date_gmt":"2019-11-14T21:34:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/b1093536"},"modified":"2019-11-14T14:34:37","modified_gmt":"2019-11-14T21:34:37","slug":"monique-sues-netflix-for-race-and-gender-discrimination","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kidn\/music-news\/monique-sues-netflix-for-race-and-gender-discrimination\/","title":{"rendered":"Mo&#8217;Nique Sues Netflix for Race and Gender Discrimination"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"photo-txt-0\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"39.658703071672\">\n<div class=\"column post-content__image--left post-content__image\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\"> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image--full\" src=\"https:\/\/akns-images.eonline.com\/eol_images\/Entire_Site\/20191014\/rs_634x1024-191114130248-634-monique.cl.111519.jpg?fit=inside|900:auto&amp;output-quality=90\" title=\"Mo'Nique \" alt=\"Mo'Nique \"><\/p>\n<p class=\"image__credits\">Paul Archuleta\/FilmMagic<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"21.957279860506\">\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/monique\">Mo&#8217;nique<\/a><\/strong> has begun a legal battle with Netflix&nbsp;accusing the company of race and sex discrimination by allegedly&nbsp;low balling her on an offer to produce a comedy special.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, the 51-year-old Oscar-winning actress and comedienne posted on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BeIg0TUFgJ0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Instagram<\/a> a video of herself calling for&nbsp;boycott of Netflix for &#8220;gender bias&#8221; and &#8220;color bias.&#8221; She claimed the company offered $500,000 to record&nbsp;a comedy special, which she said was a much smaller sum than it had offered other comics like <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/amy_schumer\">Amy Schumer<\/a><\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/chris_rock\">Chris Rock<\/a><\/strong> and&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/dave_chappelle\">Dave Chappelle<\/a><\/strong>. On Thursday, Mo&#8217;Nique sued Netflix over her claims. The company has not responded to Mo&#8217;Nique&#8217;s lawsuit or commented publicly on it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The offer Netflix made Mo&#8217;Nique wreaked of discrimination; it perpetuated the pay gap suffered by Black women,&#8221; read her lawsuit, which was filed at a Los Angeles court. &#8220;Mo&#8217;Nique objected to Netflix&#8217;s discriminatory pay offer, pointed out how it was discriminatory and asked Netflix to do the right thing by negotiating fair pay with her. In response, Netflix did the opposite.&nbsp;It dug its heels in the ground, refused to negotiate fairly and stood behind its discriminatory offer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-2\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"56.391341256367\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"10.252971137521\">\n<p>&#8220;Unfortunately for Mo&#8217;Nique and many other women of color, their challenges when speaking up about pay gap inequality are all the greater because they are met with skepticism, not empathy, when they ask for more money,&#8221; the suit states. &#8220;We celebrated victories of many talented actresses like <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/emmy_rossum\">Emmy Rossum<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/jennifer_lawrence\">Jennifer Lawrence<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/ellen_pompeo\">Ellen Pompeo<\/a><\/strong> publicly aired their financial grievances against networks and studios who paid their male colleagues more money than them. This has not been the case for Mo&#8217;Nique who to this day has not been made a fair and non-discriminatory offer by Netflix.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-4\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"64.998871331828\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"22.480812641084\">\n<p>Mo&#8217;Nique claims that&nbsp;as a direct and proximate result of Netflix&#8217;s acts and conduct,&nbsp;she has suffered economic losses\u2014&#8221;the denial of fair and equitable non-discriminatory pay&#8221;\u2014and&nbsp;general damages\u2014like &#8220;emotional and mental distress, loss of enjoyment of life, etc.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mo&#8217;Nique is demanding a jury trial.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I had a choice to make: I could accept what I felt was pay discrimination or I could stand up for those who came before me and those who will come after me,&#8221; she wrote on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B4202tchy9l\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Instagram<\/a>, regarding her lawsuit. &#8220;I chose to stand up.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The star&#8217;s lawsuit comes four years after she made&nbsp;headlines when she&nbsp;said<strong> Lee Daniels<\/strong>, who directed her in <em>Precious<\/em>, had told her she was &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/883003\/lee-daniels-denies-blackballing-mo-nique-we-seem-to-see-differently-about-this\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blackballed<\/a>&#8221; after her 2010 Oscar win for her role in the movie because she would not campaign for her award. He&nbsp;denied this, saying he has nothing but love for her and would &#8220;for sure&#8221; work with her again.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-6\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"56.908163265306\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"10.34693877551\">\n<p>Mo&#8217;Nique has had a few movie and TV roles since <em>Precious<\/em> was released in 2009 but&nbsp;has not acted onscreen since 2016. She still performs standup comedy and has a show on January 23 at SoundBoard at the MotorCity Casino Hotel in Detroit.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There was never a moment that I said, &#8216;I don&#8217;t want to do this.&#8217; There&#8217;s never been a moment that I regret saying anything that I&#8217;ve said,&#8221;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/shows\/daily_pop\/news\/1010093\/mo-nique-talks-whoopi-goldberg-drama-being-unapologetic-why-her-naacp-award-means-more-than-her-oscar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mo&#8217;Nique said on E!&#8217;s&nbsp;<em>Daily Pop<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;in January.&nbsp;&#8220;There&#8217;s never been a moment that I&#8217;m willing to take any of it back.
