Hell, Jim Carrey <em>knows<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>After killing it&nbsp;in&nbsp;<em>Girls Trip<\/em>, which came out in July 2017, she went on to co-star on the&nbsp;TBS sitcom <em>The Last O.G.<\/em> with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/tracy_morgan\">Tracy Morgan<\/a><\/strong>;&nbsp;made <em>Night School&nbsp;<\/em>with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/kevin_hart\">Kevin Hart<\/a><\/strong>,&nbsp;<em>The Oath<\/em> with&nbsp;<strong>Ike Barenholtz<\/strong>,&nbsp;<em>The Kitchen<\/em>&nbsp;with McCarthy&nbsp;and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/elisabeth_moss\">Elisabeth Moss<\/a><\/strong>; and gave voice to&nbsp;characters in&nbsp;<em>The Secret Life of Pets 2<\/em>, <em>The Angry Birds Movie<\/em> <em>2<\/em> and<em>&nbsp;<\/em>the&nbsp;Netflix series&nbsp;<em>Tuca &amp; Bertie<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>And this is an incomplete list of what she&#8217;s been up to. Also after <em>Girls Trip<\/em>, she&nbsp;appeared in a <strong>Jay-Z<\/strong> video, hosted&nbsp;<em>Saturday Night Live<\/em>, won a New York Film Critics Circle award, announced the 2018 Oscar nominees, starred in a Super Bowl commercial, presented at the Oscars,&nbsp;hosted the 2018 MTV Movie and TV Awards, won an Emmy for her&nbsp;<em>SNL<\/em> gig and was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/915529\/tiffany-haddish-cries-after-oprah-surprises-her-on-the-ellen-degeneres-show\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">surprised by Ms. Moneybags Winfrey<\/a> herself.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-3\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"40.088888888889\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"21.511111111111\">\n<p>She&#8217;s been so ubiquitous, she eventually had to retire&nbsp;the Alexander McQueen gown she proudly wore multiple times, including to the Oscars, while delivering her monologue on <em>SNL<\/em> and when she was interviewed by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/david_letterman\">David Letterman<\/a><\/strong>for his Netflix show&nbsp;<em>My Next Guest Needs No Introduction<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I love this dress and it&#8217;s getting tight,&#8221; she told Letterman. &#8220;Like my career is getting big and I think my body is getting bigger.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But the $4,000 dress had a good run. Haddish estimated she had worn it &#8220;five, six, 18 times. I wear it to the grocery store, I wear it to the DMV. That&#8217;s how I get recognized. For starters, she was a standout leading lady in the stolen-kitty comedy&nbsp;<em>Keanu<\/em>. Still, it&#8217;s&nbsp;been a fairly whirlwind rise from familiar &#8220;oh, her!&#8221; face to the woman the public is clamoring to see and hear more of.<\/p>\n<p>And your wish is her command. In a timely release that coincides with her 40th birthday, <em>Tiffany Haddish: Black Mitzvah<\/em> premiered Tuesday on Netflix.<\/p>\n<p>She&nbsp;started working the comedy club circuit since she was 15 after attending the&nbsp;Laugh Factory Comedy Camp and had been toiling on TV since 2005. Bigger roles&nbsp;started coming&nbsp;in 2013, with <em>Real Husbands of Hollywood<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>If Loving You Is Wrong<\/em> on OWN and, in 2015,&nbsp;<em>The Carmichael Show&nbsp;<\/em>on NBC.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-6\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"40.65096359743\">\n<div class=\"column post-content__image--left post-content__image\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\"> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image--full\" src=\"https:\/\/akns-images.eonline.com\/eol_images\/Entire_Site\/2018817\/rs_634x1024-180917202556-HaddishEmmys634-.jpg?fit=inside|900:auto&amp;output-quality=90\" title=\"Tiffany Haddish, 2018 Emmys\" alt=\"Tiffany Haddish, 2018 Emmys\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"image__credits\">Instagram<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"23.22358015816\">\n<p>Despite the on-stage confidence that she acquired at an early age, Haddish has&nbsp;candidly discussed in interviews and in her simultaneously heartbreaking and hilarious 2017 memoir, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/897736\/tiffany-haddish-s-new-memoir-6-most-shocking-details-from-the-last-black-unicorn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Last Black Unicorn<\/a><\/em>,&nbsp;about the at-times seemingly insurmountable obstacles in her way: when she was 13 her mother became abusive after suffering a head injury in a car accident, and was later diagnosed as schizophrenic; she&nbsp;was molested after entering the foster care system; she could barely read till the 9th grade and was basically faking her way through school till a teacher took notice; she married and re-married a man who was physically abusive; and after a fight one night he was arrested and she miscarried, not even knowing yet that she was pregnant.<\/p>\n<p>Even the title of her book is a glorious twist on a nickname kids used to tease her with in school, because of a wart she had on her face: &#8220;Dirty ass unicorn.&#8221; She recalled her grandmother freaking her out by telling her that HPV had caused the wart. When she found out that was <em>not<\/em> the case and it was just a common skin wart, a doctor burned it right off, and &#8220;that&#8217;s how the Dirty Ass Unicorn died and the Last Black Unicorn was born.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s been a dominant theme in her life, finding the comedy in a situation.&nbsp;&#8220;Comedy is the instrument and the key to keeping me being positive and alive,&#8221; she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6mI8aH4QLQY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said on&nbsp;<\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6mI8aH4QLQY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Daily Show<\/a>&nbsp;<\/em>in December 2017.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-8\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"66.083398590446\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"29.057948316366\">\n<p>&#8220;I always try to find the bright side of anything dark going on, anything hard to deal with,&#8221; Haddish <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OPbtnEXZ1H0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">explained on&nbsp;<em>Good Morning America<\/em><\/a>. &#8220;&#8230;Some things you just can&#8217;t find nothing funny about it, but it&#8217;s happening to you for a reason and probably to help others. That&#8217;s how I feel. Share the story, share the experience and maybe it&#8217;ll help somebody else in their journey.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And that somebody else isn&#8217;t&nbsp;necessarily an up-and-coming comic or a young girl struggling with bullies\u2014sometimes its a major celebrity. Haddish also recalled <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/mary_j_blige\">Mary J. Blige<\/a><\/strong> coming up to her to tell her that, when she was going through a tough time, Haddish had made her laugh so hard that she forgot about all of her troubles.<\/p>\n<p>Haddish <a href=\"https:\/\/www.essence.com\/awards-events\/red-carpet\/black-women-hollywood\/tiffany-haddish-red-carpet-black-women-support\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told&nbsp;<em>Essence<\/em><\/a> at the magazine&#8217;s Black Women in Hollywood lunch&nbsp;in March&nbsp;2018 that the support she&nbsp;had received from fellow black women in entertainment and her fellow comedians&nbsp;had been tremendous.&nbsp;&#8220;It feels amazing,&#8221; she admitted. &#8220;You always wonder, &#8216;Do my sisters care? Am I out here on my own, struggling?&#8217; They do care! You&#8217;re not by yourself!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Even when she was struggling, it sounds as though Haddish always had a knack for making other people feel great. Haddish said&nbsp;that&nbsp;she temporarily quit the Bar Mitzvah circuit after successfully getting an old man on the floor, only to witness him have a heart attack and later pass away at the hospital. She refused to go back to work until after the man&#8217;s daughter wrote her assuring her that she had just been doing her job, that he was quite old and they hadn&#8217;t seen him looking that happy in a long time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At that point they were paying me $400 a party,&#8221; Haddish wrote. &#8220;The money was too good.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime she kept disrupting class with her antics and when she was 15, a social worker basically told her she could either go to the Laugh Factory Comedy Camp or start seeing a psychiatrist. The rest is history.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-11\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"75.294597636466\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"42.322453573438\">\n<p>&#8220;I would tell a young Tiffany to figure out what it is you love, do that every single day and you will always make money. Don&#8217;t doubt yourself&#8230; Never ever doubt it,&#8221; Haddish <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/910730\/tiffany-haddish-reveals-advice-she-d-give-to-her-younger-self-don-t-doubt-yourself\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told E! News<\/a> in January 2018. And while it would seem as if that&#8217;s exactly what young Tiffany did, she knows now that it would&#8217;ve been nice to know <em>then&nbsp;<\/em>that she didn&#8217;t need to waste her energy on people who were intent on keeping her down.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I love to make people laugh and I&#8217;m making a living out of it,&#8221; she continued. &#8220;I remember being a little girl and people telling me, &#8216;Oh, you can&#8217;t make any money doing that. You need to figure out something else to do and get a real job.&#8217;&nbsp;And look at me now. I&#8217;m doing exactly what I love to do and I&#8217;m making a great living from it.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She&#8217;s come a long way from Kevin Hart, whom she met at the Laugh Factory, giving her $300 to get a hotel room when he found out she was living in her car. &#8220;But it&#8217;s crazy, because the next day I got a phone call and was offered an apartment,&#8221; Haddish <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/2018\/01\/tiffany-haddish-interview-in-the-spotlight\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told <em>Vanity Fair<\/em><\/a>. &#8220;I go look at it, and it&#8217;s like the most raggediest apartment you could ever imagine, it was just nasty and disgusting, roaches everywhere, cigarette stains in the carpet, the walls are all yellow from whatever,&nbsp;<em>whoever<\/em>&nbsp;was living there before smoking so much. It was just disgusting. The stove was full of roaches and the refrigerator was broken. It was all bad. The guy was like, &#8216;It&#8217;s $550 a month,&#8217; and I was like, &#8216;It&#8217;s perfect! I&#8217;ll take it!'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hart also&nbsp;got Haddish her first big TV role, on his&nbsp;sitcom&nbsp;<em>Real Husbands of Hollywood<\/em>, so he obviously believed in her. (She tried to pay him back the $300 when they made <em>Night School<\/em>, but Hart refused.&nbsp;&#8220;He&#8217;s like, &#8216;I don&#8217;t want your money. Just know your lines and be good in this damn movie.'&#8221;)<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"html-external-12\" data-type=\"async\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"47.201793721973\">\n<p> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/t3WQ5xytcg4?wmode=transparent\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen>[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/p>\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-html-text\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"34.780269058296\">\n<p>In 2014 she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=t3WQ5xytcg4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">debuted<\/a> as the backstage correspondent on <strong>Arsenio Hall<\/strong>&#8216;s return to late-night TV, installing a stripper pole in the green room so that men could do the performing for a change, challenging <strong>Chance the Rapper<\/strong> to a rap battle in Japanese,&nbsp;and encouraging <strong>Clay Aiken<\/strong> to make out with her to make Arsenio jealous.<\/p>\n<p>While most people would assume that&nbsp;<em>Girls Trip<\/em> was her pivotal moment, Haddish considers performing for the first time on&nbsp;<em>The Arsenio Hall Show<\/em> her first major career milestone.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The big moment for me was doing stand-up on&nbsp;<em>The Arsenio Hall Show,<\/em>&nbsp;to me, that was bigger than me doing&nbsp;<em>Def Comedy Jam,<\/em>&nbsp;that was bigger than me doing&nbsp;<em>Live at Gotham,<\/em>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<em>The Tonight Show,<\/em>or anything like that because I remember being a little girl watching [the original]&nbsp;<em>Arsenio Hall Show,<\/em>&nbsp;wishing I could hang out with&nbsp;Arsenio<strong>,<\/strong>&nbsp;be Arsenio&#8217;s friend, or something in some kind of way,&#8221; she told&nbsp;<em>Vanity Fair<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;&#8230;When [his show]&nbsp;came back, I was like, &#8216;Oh, this is my chance.&#8217; And, when I finally got a chance to do stand-up on there, to me that was like, &#8216;I made it. I promised her if she kept faith in God and Herself, We will get to a place where we will be Housed, Over Fed, Less Hurt and Fear Free.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As for&nbsp;<em>Girls Trip<\/em>, which earned $115 million at the box office after costing a paltry $19 million to make,&nbsp;&#8220;it was like, &#8216;Oh, good I got a job,'&#8221; she told&nbsp;<em>VF<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Months after its release, she became the first black female comedian to host&nbsp;<em>SNL<\/em>. You know, it would be crazy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the master plan hasn&#8217;t changed from when she was a teenager doing stand-up at comedy camp.<\/p>\n<p>Haddish still wants to be &#8220;little baby&nbsp;Oprah,&nbsp;with my own production company, maybe my own channel, inspire millions,&#8221; she told&nbsp;<em>VF<\/em>.&nbsp;&#8220;So, yeah. I could do whatever I put my mind to,&#8221; she informed Simmons. &#8220;I&#8217;m not doing a lot, maybe more than the average person because I have a work ethic\u2014and you know, it keeps me out of trouble.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>What sort of trouble?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I might get married again,&#8221; she replied, laughing, &#8220;and start cooking and cleaning and stuff.
