It&#8217;s been a lot of good, a lot of really complicated.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The complicated is somewhat easy to deduce: There&#8217;s the whole <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/scooter_braun\">Scooter Braun<\/a><\/strong> and <strong>Scott Borchetta<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1095776\/everything-that-s-led-to-this-taylor-swift-and-scooter-braun-debacle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">debacle<\/a> involving her old label still owning her collection of masters\u2014the original recordings of her first&nbsp;six multi-platinum albums that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1101719\/taylor-swift-would-have-paid-so-much-to-obtain-her-album-masters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">she recently shared<\/a> she &#8220;would have paid so much for&#8221; had she been able to purchase them.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-2\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"59.798418972332\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"12.640316205534\">\n<p>And there&#8217;s her mother <strong>Andrea Swift<\/strong>&#8216;s ongoing battle with cancer, documented in the heart-wrenching &#8220;Soon You&#8217;ll Get Better&#8221;, a situation that likely inspired her to eschew her standard studio tour for 2020&#8217;s Lover Fest, a handful of dates that afford her a bit of wiggle room in her normally jam-packed schedule.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a year where I have to be there for my family\u2014there&#8217;s a lot of question marks throughout the next year,&#8221; she recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/articles\/columns\/pop\/8545822\/taylor-swift-cover-story-interview-billboard-women-in-music-2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told <em>Billboard<\/em><\/a>, &#8220;so I wanted to make sure that I could go home.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-3\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"39.851528384279\">\n<div class=\"column post-content__image--left post-content__image\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"32\"> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image--full\" src=\"https:\/\/akns-images.eonline.com\/eol_images\/Entire_Site\/20191025\/rs_634x1024-191125054958-634-Taylor-Swift-J4R-112519.jpg?fit=inside|900:auto&amp;output-quality=90\" title=\"Taylor Swift, American Music Awards\" alt=\"Taylor Swift, American Music Awards\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"image__credits\">Kevin Mazur\/AMA2019\/Getty Images for dcp<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"24.677536231884\">\n<p>As for the good, well, there&#8217;s been a lot of it in 2019.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Pennsylvania native who spent her tweens <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/article\/2008\/02\/05\/taylor-swifts-road-fame\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">door-knocking ever studio<\/a>&nbsp;on&nbsp;Nashville&#8217;s music row earned another&nbsp;six&nbsp;American Music Awards at the November event, bringing her total to 26, a number that topples the record <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/michael_jackson\">Michael Jackson<\/a><\/strong> has held since 2009. Fittingly, she was&nbsp;named the&nbsp;show&#8217;s first ever artist of the decade and tonight she&#8217;ll&nbsp;receive a similar honor at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/articles\/news\/awards\/8545988\/meet-your-2019-billboard-women-in-music-hosts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Billboard<\/em>&#8216;s Women in Music<\/a>, the magazine touting her as their woman of the decade.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She also put out an album she&#8217;s calling her &#8220;new beginning&#8221;\u2014her&nbsp;seventh studio disc, <em>Lover<\/em>, of course,&nbsp;debuting at number one, with all 18 tracks&nbsp;simultaneously charting on the Billboard Hot 100, and going on to become the year&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1067812\/taylor-swift-s-lover-surpasses-a-star-is-born-as-2019-s-top-selling-album-in-the-u-s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">top-selling album<\/a> within two days of its August released. (It garnered her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1094364\/grammys-2020-taylor-swift-scores-3-nominations-amid-music-battle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">three Grammy nods<\/a> as well, providing her a chance to add to her collection of 10.)<\/p>\n<p>Plus she&nbsp;was named one of <em>TIME<\/em> magazine&#8217;s annual 100 Most Influential People and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1055697\/taylor-swift-is-the-world-s-highest-paid-celebrity-of-2019-but-kylie-jenner-isn-t-far-behind\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Forbes<\/em>&#8216;&nbsp;highest paid celebrity<\/a> of 2019,&nbsp;thanks in large part to her hugely successful <em>reputation<\/em> tour.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-5\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"59.525190839695\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"15.935877862595\">\n<p>And, oh yeah, she&#8217;s in the healthiest and happiest relationship of her adult life, her forever with boyfriend of two-plus years <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/joe_alwyn\">Joe Alwyn<\/a><\/strong> all but assumed. And though she won&#8217;t turn 30 until tomorrow, she already seems to have a lock on the new decade, putting out a list of&nbsp;the 30 things she&#8217;s learned ahead of that particular milestone in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elle.com\/culture\/celebrities\/a26628467\/taylor-swift-30th-birthday-lessons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a March essay<\/a> for <em>Elle<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This year feels more special to me than any year before it,&#8221; she <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/music\/taylor-swift-people-of-the-year-life-changing-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">confessed to <em>People<\/em><\/a> as they honored her as one of their People of the Year. &#8220;Fifteen years into doing this, being able to look around and acknowledge that it&#8217;s special, I&#8217;m really stoked this moment can happen when I&#8217;m 29.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-6\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"43.260984182777\">\n<div class=\"column post-content__image--left post-content__image\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"32\"> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image--full\" src=\"https:\/\/akns-images.eonline.com\/eol_images\/Entire_Site\/2019920\/rs_634x1024-191020185232-634.taylor-swift.ct.102019.jpg?fit=inside|900:auto&amp;output-quality=90\" title=\"Taylor Swift, We Can Survive concert\" alt=\"Taylor Swift, We Can Survive concert\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"image__credits\">Getty Images for Entercom<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"27.539568345324\">\n<p>Perhaps that all started with following her own advice. Or rather, discovering the lessons&nbsp;the hard way, then advocating that others skip that part and just&nbsp;take her word for it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Because Swift has been <em>through<\/em> it the past few years. Long before her stand-off with Braun and Borchetta was making headlines, there was that dust-up with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/kim_kardashian\">Kim Kardashian<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/kanye_west\">Kanye West<\/a><\/strong>. The backlash was, um, swift and a lot. Suddenly everything the musician, a natural people pleaser, did\u2014from dating <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/tom_hiddleston\">Tom Hiddleston<\/a><\/strong> to ending things with Tom Hiddleston to not publicly announcing her preferred candidate in the 2016 election\u2014was just <em>wrong<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If I did something good, it was for the wrong reasons. If I did something brave, I didn&#8217;t do it correctly. If I stood up for myself, I was throwing a tantrum,&#8221;&nbsp;she shared <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/taylor-swift-rolling-stone-interview-880794\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">with <em>Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a> this fall. &#8220;And so I found myself in this endless mockery echo chamber.<\/p>\n<p>During the worst of it, she continued, &#8220;You feel like you&#8217;re being completely pulled into a riptide. So what are you going to do? Splash a lot? Or hold your breath and hope you somehow resurface? And that&#8217;s what I did.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-7\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"40.748188405797\">\n<div class=\"column post-content__image--left post-content__image\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"32\"> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image--full\" src=\"https:\/\/akns-images.eonline.com\/eol_images\/Entire_Site\/2018622\/rs_634x1024-180722110638-634-taylor-swift.cm.72218.jpg?fit=inside|900:auto&amp;output-quality=90\" title=\"Taylor Swift, Reputation Tour\" alt=\"Taylor Swift, Reputation Tour\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"image__credits\">Kevin Mazur\/TAS18\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"20.608574091333\">\n<p>Specifically, she took a little me time, &#8220;recalibrating&#8221; her life, as she put it to <em>Billboard<\/em> &#8220;to make it feel more manageable.&#8221; That meant pulling back on the level to which she let fans in a bit, choosing to keep the new romance she was diving into with British actor Alwyn completely private (&#8220;I&#8217;ve learned that if I do [talk about it], people think it&#8217;s up for discussion, and our relationship isn&#8217;t up for discussion,&#8221; she explained <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2019\/aug\/24\/taylor-swift-pop-music-hunger-games-gladiators\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to UK&#8217;s <em>The Guardian<\/em><\/a> this August) and reassessing her approach to social media.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Because there were some years there where I felt like I didn&#8217;t quite know what exactly to give people and what to hold back, what to share and what to protect. I think a lot of people go through that, especially in the last decade,&#8221; she explained to <em>Billboard<\/em>. &#8220;I broke through pre-social media, and then there was this phase where social media felt fun and casual and quirky and safe. And then it got to the point where everyone has to evaluate their relationship with social media. So I decided that the best thing I have to offer people is my music.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-8\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"38\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"16\">\n<p>So she turned&nbsp;off the comments on Instagram as a nod to her own self-care. &#8220;I think it&#8217;s healthy for your self-esteem to need less internet praise to appease it, especially when three comments down you could unwittingly see someone telling you that you look like a weasel that got hit by a truck and stitched back together by a drunk taxidermist,&#8221; she wrote in <em>Elle<\/em>. &#8220;An actual comment I received once.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And she cleansed&nbsp;her life of anyone bringing the drama: &#8220;You only have so much room in your life and so much energy to give to those in it. Be discerning,&#8221; she advised. &#8220;If someone in your life is hurting you, draining you, or causing you pain in a way that feels unresolvable, blocking their number isn&#8217;t cruel. It&#8217;s just a simple setting on your phone that will eliminate drama if you so choose to use it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-10\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"67.37899543379\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"25.762557077626\">\n<p>By&nbsp;not just shaking off, but truly blocking out the haters, she&nbsp;was able to truly reclaim her voice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For the first time ever, she made her political and social positions known, steeling herself against those that didn&#8217;t agree with her supporting Tennessee Democrat&nbsp;<strong>Phil Bredesen<\/strong>. And when she&nbsp;released her second <em>Lover<\/em> single, &#8220;You Need to Calm Down&#8221;, it was an unabashed celebration of&nbsp;the LGBTQIA community, complete with a call for fans to sign her&nbsp;Change.org petition in support of the Equality Act.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The track, she has since shared, was inspired by a conversation she had with friend and choreographer <strong>Todrick Hall<\/strong> in which he asked what she would do if her son were gay.&nbsp;&#8220;The fact that he had to ask me\u2026shocked me and made me realize that I had not made my position clear enough or loud enough,&#8221; she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1063295\/taylor-swift-covers-vogue-7-revelations-from-her-candid-interview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told <em>Vogue<\/em><\/a>. &#8220;If my son was gay, he&#8217;d be gay. I don&#8217;t understand the question.&#8221; But if it had&nbsp;occurred to him, she shared, &#8220;I can&#8217;t imagine what my fans in the LGBTQ community might be thinking. It was kind of devastating to realize that I hadn&#8217;t been publicly clear about that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-11\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"39.254634146341\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"22.431219512195\">\n<p>So she was, serving up an impossibly catchy anthem and a video filled with&nbsp;cameos by everyone from <em>Queer Eye<\/em>&#8216;s Fab Five to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/billy_porter\">Billy Porter<\/a><\/strong> to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/ellen_degeneres\">Ellen DeGeneres<\/a><\/strong> to pal-turned-frenemy-turned friend once more <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/katy_perry\">Katy Perry<\/a><\/strong>, their on-camera hug serving as the physical embodiment of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1050064\/taylor-swift-says-life-is-so-much-lighter-after-ending-feud-with-katy-perry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">their squashed feud<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When you advocate for something, it has to be completely disconnected from what people say about you advocating for it. It should be removed from hard numbers,&#8221; she told <em>People<\/em>, though it&#8217;s worth noting her&nbsp;political musings caused a spike in voter registration&nbsp;and her petition&nbsp;is steadily climbing to 600,000&nbsp;signatures.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She&#8217;s not done speaking out either, her next cause championing for artists&#8217; rights, having already gotten her new label to agree to pay musicians a &#8220;significant portion&#8221; of the money they&nbsp;pocket from Spotify shares.&nbsp;&#8220;If&nbsp;I&#8217;m in a position to speak about it\u2014which thankfully I am\u2014and somebody who&#8217;s younger who&#8217;s signing a record deal can learn from that, then that&#8217;s a good day,&#8221; she <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/music\/taylor-swift-aligned-generous-label-amid-big-machine-feud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told <em>People<\/em><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-13\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"64\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"18\">\n<p>Not to mention it&#8217;s been liberating to be completely transparent about where she stands.&nbsp;&#8220;I think when your public opinions on things are known, it makes me feel like my fans are able to know me more. It feels like what I believe in and what people know I believe in are aligned,&#8221; she continued. &#8220;That is a really great sense of relief to have as a person who for 15 years has been trying to navigate what is public and what isn&#8217;t. It&#8217;s a nice moment right now to know I can say what I believe in, and I can disconnect from if people don&#8217;t like that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the disc is quite simply a celebration of everything else that&#8217;s happening in her world. <em>Reputation<\/em> and the ensuing tour affording her the chance to get everything off her chest, she wrapped the&nbsp;53 dates feeling&nbsp;&#8220;in the healthiest, most balanced place I&#8217;ve ever been,&#8221; she told <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>. &#8220;After that tour, bad stuff can happen to me, but it doesn&#8217;t level me anymore.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-14\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"43.5\">\n<div class=\"column post-content__image--left post-content__image\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\"> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image--full\" src=\"https:\/\/akns-images.eonline.com\/eol_images\/Entire_Site\/2019811\/rs_634x1024-190911091220-634-taylor-swift-mv-91019.jpg?fit=inside|900:auto&amp;output-quality=90\" title=\"Taylor Swift \" alt=\"Taylor Swift \"><\/p>\n<p class=\"image__credits\">Dave Hogan<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"27\">\n<p>And she was able to put together <em>Lover<\/em>, the first disc in a long while, she shared with <em>People<\/em>, that wasn&#8217;t a reaction to how people saw her: &#8220;In the past, I&#8217;ve definitely used my criticism as a jumping-off point for creativity. With reputation, I&#8217;d said everything I needed to say. I&#8217;d been tried in every possible way people could throw things at me, and I felt like now I just get to create.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Having already solidified that her brand of music doesn&#8217;t require her to be lovelorn or scorned\u2014&#8221;There&#8217;s a common misconception that artists have to be miserable in order to make good art, that art and suffering go hand in hand. I&#8217;m really grateful to have learned this isn&#8217;t true,&#8221; she told <em>Elle<\/em>\u2014she was able to put out tracks that were a true celebration of the romance that has come in her life, a process she likened in <em>The Guardian<\/em> to feeling like &#8220;I could take a full deep breath again.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The lyrics of &#8220;London Boy&#8221; and &#8220;Afterglow&#8221; are the closest we&#8217;re going to get to commentary on their romance, but suffice to say Swift is the happiest she&#8217;s ever been, wiling away a solid chunk of her time in his British hometown at local pubs or visiting his family.&nbsp;While it&#8217;s incredibly unlikely we&#8217;ll ever&nbsp;hear her say it, she&#8217;s currently living out her love story\u2014all that&#8217;s left is to say yes to his inevitable proposal.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-15\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"41.623202301055\">\n<div class=\"column post-content__image--left post-content__image\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\"> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image--full\" src=\"https:\/\/akns-images.eonline.com\/eol_images\/Entire_Site\/2019110\/rs_634x1024-190210195541-634-taylor-swift-joe-alwyn-baftas.jpg?fit=inside|900:auto&amp;output-quality=90\" title=\"Joe Alwyn, Taylor Swift\" alt=\"Joe Alwyn, Taylor Swift\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"image__credits\">Splash News<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"25.821532492726\">\n<p>So, yeah, when she blows out her candles tomorrow, whether with just her nearest and dearest by her side, or the full <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/gigi_hadid\">Gigi Hadid<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/blake_lively\">Blake Lively<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/selena_gomez\">Selena Gomez<\/a><\/strong> squad, she&#8217;ll be celebrating far more than just another year in the books.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve been told by a lot of people [your 30s] are really fun,&#8221; she <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/music\/taylor-swift-refuses-to-stress-about-her-body\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told <em>People<\/em><\/a>, &#8220;and I&#8217;m having a really good time approaching them.&nbsp;Year one of her next decade seems awfully promising,&nbsp;with the Dec. 20 release of Cats, next summer&#8217;s Lover Fest and the planned re-recording of her masters beginning in November.&nbsp;&#8220;It&#8217;s going to be fun, because it&#8217;ll feel like regaining a freedom and taking back what&#8217;s mine,&#8221; she mused to Billboard. &#8220;When I created [these songs], I didn&#8217;t know what they would grow up to be. Going back in and knowing that it meant something to people is actually a really beautiful way to celebrate what the fans have done for my music.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>With so many blessings to count, who&nbsp;needs a birthday wish?
