The 24-year-old beat 50 other contestants to earn the coveted title at the 93rd annual competition, which aired live on NBC from the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Miss Georgia <strong>Victoria Hill<\/strong> was named the first-runner up, while&nbsp;Miss Missouri&nbsp;<strong>Simone Esters&nbsp;<\/strong>came in as the second runner-up.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tonight&#8217;s competition followed 51 intelligent, beautiful and charismatic candidates as they competed for scholarships to be used to continue their efforts toward community service and education. Judges&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/kelly_rowland\">Kelly Rowland<\/a><\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Karamo Brown<\/strong> and&nbsp;<strong>Lauren Ash<\/strong> quizzed the contestants on current events, their platforms and more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now, former Miss America&nbsp;<strong>Nia Franklin<\/strong> of New York will crown her successor<strong>,&nbsp;<\/strong>who&nbsp;will continue to advance her message of empowerment and independence through their community efforts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-2\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"57.5\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"5\">\n<p>During the show tonight, Schrier shared her passion for science by conducting a chemistry experiment onstage and advocating for the importance of drug safety. She is currently a pharmacy student at Virginia Tech University.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-3-img\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"31\">\n<div class=\"post-content__image\" readability=\"32\"> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image--full\" src=\"https:\/\/akns-images.eonline.com\/eol_images\/Entire_Site\/20191119\/rs_1024x759-191219191037-1024-camille-pageant-me-121919.jpg?fit=inside|900:auto&amp;output-quality=90\" border=\"0\" title=\"Camille Schrier, Miss Virginia\" alt=\"Camille Schrier, Miss Virginia\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"759\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"image__credits\">Donald Kravitz\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-3\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"34.517045454545\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"17.897727272727\">\n<p>While pageants have historically gotten a bad rap for&nbsp;their regressive politics when it comes to women empowerment, diversity and inclusion\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/videos\/300445\/miss-usa-miss-teen-usa-miss-universe-miss-america-s-historic-wins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this past year shows that things are moving in a different direction<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The former Miss America made history along with the newly crowned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1100591\/miss-south-africa-zozibini-tunzi-is-crowned-miss-universe-2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Miss Universe<\/a>,&nbsp;<strong>Zozibini Tunzi<\/strong> of South Africa,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1037899\/miss-usa-2019-5-things-to-know-about-miss-north-carolina-cheslie-kryst\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Miss USA<\/a> <strong>Cheslie Kryst&nbsp;<\/strong>and Miss Teen USA&nbsp;<strong>Keliegh Garris<\/strong>\u2014marking the first time ever that these titles were held by black women.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In May,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/05\/05\/style\/miss-teen-usa-america-black.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">former Miss America told the<\/a>&nbsp;<em>New York Times<\/em>, &#8220;It&#8217;s important to little brown and black girls to see three strong figures, three strong women, African American women that are doing so much great work. People will argue that race doesn&#8217;t matter. But race does matter in America because of the history, because of slavery.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"video-int-txt-4\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"37\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-video-text\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"14\">\n<p>During the competition last year, Franklin also opened about the struggles she&#8217;s faced not seeing herself represented in the world around her.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I grew up at a predominately Caucasian school and there was only five percent minority, and I felt out of place so much because of the color of my skin,&#8221; Franklin said\/ &#8220;But growing up, I found my love of arts, and through music that helped me to feel positive about myself and about who I was.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations to Miss Virginia on snagging the coveted title!<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"tune-in-5\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"33\">\n<p class=\"tune-in__text\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\"><i>E!
