Taylor Swift<\/a><\/strong>‘s Netflix documentary is here<\/a>, and so is its power anthem, “Only The Young.”<\/p>\n

The singer dropped the song featured in the credits of <\/a>Miss Americana<\/a> <\/em>on Friday, Jan. 31, the same day the film dropped on the streaming service. Given that one of the main plot points of the documentary is Swift’s political awakening, the song is meant to be a battle cry for young voters. It’s Swift’s attempt to embolden Gen-Zers to continue their political activism in spite of the unrelenting stream of bad news surrounding them.<\/p>\n

In the lyrics, Swift addresses teenagers’ fears of mass shootings happening in their schools, seemingly refers to Donald Trump<\/a><\/strong> as “the big, bad man with his big, bad clan” and the end of the lyric video\u2014similar to the end of “You Need To Calm Down<\/a>“\u2014urges people to register to vote and sign up for election reminders.<\/p>\n

It’s a staunchly political<\/a> song, one that\u2014as Miss Americana<\/em> shows\u2014took a lot of personal evolution on the singer’s part to be able to write.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

In one moment in the doc, a 2018 conversation about Swift’s political activity is shown. In it, Swift is warned by her father and various members of her team that sharing<\/a> her first ever political endorsement<\/a> could potentially harm her career. (It didn’t. It ended up boosting voter registration<\/a> instead.) But given the political state of the world (she sites having major regret over not speaking her mind during the 2016 presidential election), she can’t care about that anymore.<\/p>\n

As she says, “”I wanna do this. I need to be on the right side of history.”<\/p>\n

“Only The Young” is a continuation of that sentiment.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

As she sings in the first verse, “It keeps me awake, the look on your face \/ The moment you heard the news \/ You’re screaming\u2009inside\u2009and frozen in\u2009time \/ You did all that you could\u2009do \/ The game was rigged, the ref got tricked \/ The wrong ones think they’re right \/ You were outnumbered this time.”<\/p>\n

“But only the young \/ Only the young,” she continues in the chorus. “Only the young, only the young \/ Can run \/ Can run \/ So run, and run and run.”<\/p>\n

The second verse references mass shootings. As she sings, “So every day now \/ You brace for the sound you’ve only heard on TV \/ You go to class, scared \/ Wondering where the best hiding spot would be \/ And the big bad man and his big bad clan \/ Their hands are stained with red \/ Oh, how quickly they forget.”<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

As she sings of the government later in the song, “They aren’t gonna help us \/ Too busy helping themselves \/ They aren’t gonna change this \/ We gotta do it ourselves \/ They think that it’s over \/ But it’s just begun.”<\/p>\n

Swift tries to inspire one last time as the song closes out.<\/p>\n

“Don’t say you’re too tired to fight,” she croons. “It’s just a matter of time (Can run) \/ Up there’s the finish line (So run, and run, and run) \/ Don’t say you’re too tired to fight \/  It’s just a matter of time (So run) \/ Up there’s the finish line (And run, and run, and run).”<\/p>\n

Her fans are in love with the track.<\/p>\n

As one user wrote<\/a>, “Who would’ve thought that Taylor Swift would one day write an anthem empowering the youth by spreading awareness about politics and also including sensitive topics such as mass shootings? She’s trying to make the world a better place, so proud!”<\/p>\n

Chimed in another<\/a>, “Only the Young captures so much of what I was feeling after the 2016 elections, and I hope it captures that feeling of resistance in so many young people.”<\/p>\n
