The actor literally did so on NBC’s Saturday Night Live <\/strong><\/em>while making a surprise appearance in a musical parody sketch that poked fun at New York City’s LaGuardia Airport. Channeling Idina Menzel<\/a><\/strong>‘s Wicked<\/em> witch character Elphaba, a pajamas-clad Gyllenhaal performed an airborne parody of the hit Broadway musical’s showstopper “Defying Gravity.”<\/p>\n

The sketch also parodied musicals such as Phantom of the Opera<\/em>, Little Shop of Horrors<\/em> and West Side Story<\/em>. It featured host, comedian and former regular SNL<\/em> writer John Mulaney<\/strong>, plus cast members Pete Davidson<\/a><\/strong>, Chris Redd<\/strong>, Cecily Strong<\/a><\/strong>, Kenan Thompson<\/strong>, Beck Bennett<\/strong>, Mikey Day<\/strong>, Kate McKinnon<\/a><\/strong>, Bowen Yang<\/strong>, Alex Moffatt<\/strong> and Talking Heads<\/strong> frontman David Byrne<\/strong>, the episode’s musical guest.<\/p>\n

Gyllenhaal recently performed in the Broadway production of Slave Play<\/em> and is set to appear in the musical Caroline, or Change<\/em> in April. The actor made his Broadway debut in 2015 in the play Constellations<\/em> and starred in the musical Sunday in the Park With George<\/em> two years later.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n
