{"id":289131,"date":"2020-03-07T07:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-03-07T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/b1128995"},"modified":"2020-03-07T07:00:00","modified_gmt":"2020-03-07T14:00:00","slug":"lights-camera-action-celebrate-the-women-changing-film-this-international-womens-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kidn\/music-news\/lights-camera-action-celebrate-the-women-changing-film-this-international-womens-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Lights, Camera, Action: Celebrate the Women Changing Film This International Women&#8217;s Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"video-int-txt-0\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"40.598335067638\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-video-text\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"27.065556711759\">\n<p>Tomorrow is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/shows\/peoples_choice_awards\/news\/1128618\/who-run-the-world-girls-these-16-female-celebrities-run-their-own-empire?query=female%20director\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Women&#8217;s Day<\/a>, so we&#8217;re celebrating a little early by honoring some of the most iconic women who are changing film!<\/p>\n<p>As Hollywood is slowly starting to include more diverse voices, we&#8217;ve been seeing far more female directors, writers and producers finally have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1066479\/matrix-4-is-officially-happening-with-keanu-reeves-and-lana-wachowski?query=matrix\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">their names up in lights<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Just this past year, we saw filmmakers like <strong>Lulu Wang, Lorene Scarfaria, Alma Har&#8217;el<\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/mindy_kaling\">Mindy Kaling<\/a><\/strong> make headlines from having their films win at award shows to nabbing record distribution deals with streaming services.<\/p>\n<p>And while, yet again, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1121203\/natalie-portman-s-tribute-to-all-the-snubbed-female-directors-on-her-2020-oscars-gown-is-a-must-see?query=lulu%20wang\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">no women were nominated this year<\/a> at the Oscars for their achievements in directing, we saw <strong>Greta Gerwig<\/strong> get her second Academy Awards nomination, this time for Adapted Screenplay.<\/p>\n<p>The best part? Prior to directing the comedy-drama, Scafaria had directed <em>Nick and Nora&#8217;s Infinite Playlist, The Meddler <\/em>and <em>Seeking a Friend for the End of the World<\/em>. After the wild success of the first film, we got another three films in the franchise that the sisters produced, directed or wrote. They also wrote <em>V for Vendetta<\/em> and directed, wrote and produced 2015&#8217;s <em>Jupiter Ascending<\/em>. The visceral film, which got rave reviews from its premiere at Sundance, takes on assault in the #MeToo era with no apologies. Har&#8217;el was able to capture the very personal and intimate relationship between a young boy and his abusive father and ended up winning the Directors Guild Awards honor for First Time Feature Film. Now, she&#8217;s using her background as a Malaysian writer from Chinese descent to help Disney tell a new story&nbsp;for the upcoming untitled&nbsp;fantasy-adventure animated film, which according to <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2018\/10\/disney-crazy-rich-asians-moana-animation-movie-1202478895\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Deadline<\/a>&nbsp;will have an Asian element to it. She then worked on 2018&#8217;s <em>Black Panther<\/em> as the film&#8217;s director of photography, which made her the first woman to ever to hold that title\/role on any big budget superhero movie and in any Marvel film period. The film itself won six Oscars that year and not only did Bigelow breakthrough the male-dominated category, but she proved that women can direct action films and films about war accurately and just as effectively as their male counterparts. What a concept! Despite the fact that this makes perfect sense, it was still a big deal when <strong>Patty Jenkins<\/strong> directed 2017&#8217;s <em>Wonder Woman<\/em>, which eventually raked in more than $800 million worldwide making Jenkins the most successful female director of a live-action film. When <strong>Alfonso&nbsp;Cuar\u00f3n<\/strong> set out to cast the lead in his film <em>Roma<\/em>, he went to Aparico&#8217;s hometown of Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca in Mexico, but she was focused on studying to a be a school teacher. After going to an open casting call she was discovered by the director and once she signed on for the project her life instantly changed. The film was a massive success, she traveled all over the world to promote it and she was even on the cover of <em>Vogue Mexico<\/em>. Oh, and she earned an Oscar nomination, which made her only the second Mexican-born actress to be up for he category of Best Actress in the award show&#8217;s history. Not only was the sale one of the largest pacts in Sundance history with its $13 million price tag\u2014the biggest was a $17.5 million deal that Fox Searchlight made for <em>The Birth of a Nation<\/em> for global rights\u2014this deal is the <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2019\/01\/late-night-sundance-film-festival-deal-13-million-dollar-united-states-rights-mindy-kaling-amazon-emma-thompson-nisha-gantara-1202542473\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">only deal for U.S. rights<\/a> to ever hit the $13 million mark.
