This Thursday activity, hosted by Xena and Gabrielle themselves, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/lucy_lawless\">Lucy Lawless<\/a><\/strong> and <strong>Renee O&#8217;Connor<\/strong>, instantly brought me back to those days and nights of my childhood spent in front of the TV watching their adventures\u2014and sparked the desire to pass the chakram down to my niece. But&nbsp;it would have to be done as a social distancing activity.<\/p>\n<p>I was 8 years old when <em>Xena: Warrior Princess<\/em> hit the airwaves in 1995. My dad, knowing I was already an avid fan of comic book heroes like Wonder Woman and the X-Men, decided I should be watching <em>Xena<\/em>.&nbsp;He bought me the action figure to encourage viewing and it worked. He had no idea what he was getting himself into.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-2\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"58.937426210153\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"16.576151121606\">\n<p>I was hooked from the start. <em>Xena<\/em> was one of the first shows I was ever a &#8220;fan&#8221; of. I went on message boards; I went to conventions. For six years (and beyond), I was a devoted Xenite. A snapshot into how beloved <em>Xena<\/em> is to me: I flew across country alone for the first time at 14 years old to visit my uncle and meet Renee O&#8217;Connor at a local community theater production shortly after the series ended.<\/p>\n<p>I have since interviewed Lucy Lawless in a professional capacity. She sent me one of Xena&#8217;s chakrams from her collection after our first interview, it was one of the greatest moments of my life. So, yeah, <em>Xena<\/em> left a lasting impression on this writer.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/692893\/xena-turns-20-how-a-warrior-princess-changed-my-life\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">my affinity for the show as a kid inspired my overall TV fanaticism<\/a> and put me on the TV journalism career path. Without <em>Xena<\/em>, you probably wouldn&#8217;t be reading articles written by me.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-4\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"59.5\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"9\">\n<p>When Syfy announced the <em>Xena<\/em> marathon, I alerted my parents, brother and sister-in-law immediately.&nbsp;There was some question as to whether my 7-year-old niece Eleanor could handle the show, but&nbsp;I quickly reminded everyone&nbsp;I wasn&#8217;t much older than she was when my dad introduced me to the series. Since we&#8217;re social distancing about two hours away from each other, we turned to technology to facilitate the moment I&#8217;ve been waiting seven years for.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"video-int-txt-5\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"36\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-video-text\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"12\">\n<p>On Saturday, April 18, we got on Zoom and watched &#8220;Sins of the Past,&#8221; the first episode of <em>Xena: Warrior Princess.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She&#8217;s a princess?&#8221; Eleanor asked. I gave her a primer during a commercial break\u2014Xena used to be bad, but now she&#8217;s on the path to doing good. &#8220;I feel that I love it,&#8221; Eleanor told me during the commercial.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-7\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"63.369277108434\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"20.31686746988\">\n<p>We finished the first episode and Eleanor asked for the second one immediately. &#8220;I loved it!&#8221; she declared. She told me she hoped Xena continued on the path for good, and that she would do that too if she was the warrior princess.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yeah, I would want to be like Xena\u2026Being a warrior princess. I want to be royal and fight, but try to get them to learn to be good,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Since she was born, I&#8217;ve been looking forward to introducing Eleanor to my favorite things, to connect with her over the things I held (and still hold) dear from childhood and heroes I&#8217;ve come to appreciate as an adult. I have waited impatiently to introduce her to butt-kicking role models real and fictional, slowly introducing her to the likes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/803672\/wonder-woman-forever-lynda-carter-on-embracing-her-legacy-and-becoming-supergirl-s-president\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Lynda Carter<\/strong>&#8216;s <em>Wonder Woman<\/em><\/a>, <em>Star Wars<\/em> and <strong>Ruth Bader Ginsburg<\/strong> via books, toys and kid-appropriate shows.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-8\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"40.5\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"21\">\n<p>I didn&#8217;t think we&#8217;d have to watch our first episode of <em>Xena<\/em> together over Zoom, but I&#8217;m thankful there&nbsp;was technology out there that let us connect in this way. Perhaps she wouldn&#8217;t have been so taken by the series had I been there in person. The desire for new connections during this fraught time are omnipresent, for 33 year olds and 7 year olds alike.<\/p>\n<p>Now we&#8217;ll have this experience, this connection over a warrior princess and her battling bard partner, forged over having to watch the series together while miles apart.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor kept watching <em>Xena<\/em> for the rest of Saturday.
