{"id":291414,"date":"2020-04-24T11:36:46","date_gmt":"2020-04-24T17:36:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/b1144562"},"modified":"2020-04-24T11:36:46","modified_gmt":"2020-04-24T17:36:46","slug":"meghan-markle-says-her-dad-was-exploited-by-the-press-as-privacy-case-begins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kidn\/music-news\/meghan-markle-says-her-dad-was-exploited-by-the-press-as-privacy-case-begins\/","title":{"rendered":"Meghan Markle Says Her Dad Was &#8220;Exploited&#8221; By the Press as Privacy Case Begins"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"video-int-txt-0\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"42.654571159284\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-video-text\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"27.797360980207\">\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/meghan_markle\">Meghan Markle<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s legal case against a British tabloid has officially begun.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday morning, the first court hearing in the case was held online by London&#8217;s High Court due to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/coronavirus\">Coronavirus<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/meghan-markle-privacy-lawsuit-gets-underway-london-n1191526\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NBC News<\/a>, Meghan and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/prince_harry\">Prince Harry<\/a><\/strong> woke up at 4 a.m. at their Los Angeles-area home to remotely join part of the hearing. Meghan&#8217;s arguments, however, were set out by her legal counsel who specializes in privacy, confidentiality and defamation cases.<\/p>\n<p>Meghan&#8217;s attorney David Sherborne said the court &#8220;has to decide whether the public were being deliberately misled&#8221; by the <em>Mail on Sunday<\/em>&nbsp;only publishing parts of the letter, rather than the whole letter.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He went on to argue that the way by which the letter&#8217;s contents were published were &#8220;dishonest&#8221; as the omitted parts of the letter did not fit the publication&#8217;s&nbsp;narrative.<\/p>\n<p>For those not up to date, the Duchess of Sussex is suing Associated Newspapers, the publisher of Britain&#8217;s <em>Mail on Sunday<\/em>, for breaching her privacy by printing parts of a letter she wrote to her father&nbsp;around&nbsp;her 2018 wedding.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-2\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"57.5\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"5\">\n<p>The paper&#8217;s lawyers have argued that given Meghan&#8217;s royal status, there was legitimate public interest in her family relationships and that <strong>Thomas Markle<\/strong> had the right to put his side of events to the public.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-3\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"38.5\">\n<div class=\"column post-content__image--left post-content__image\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"32\"> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image--full\" src=\"https:\/\/akns-images.eonline.com\/eol_images\/Entire_Site\/2019014\/rs_634x1024-190114085621-634-meghan-markle-sussex-sad.jpg?fit=inside|900:auto&amp;output-quality=90\" title=\"Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex\" alt=\"Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"image__credits\">Chris Jackson\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"15\">\n<p>&#8220;<em>The Mail on Sunday<\/em> stands by the story it published and will be defending this case vigorously,&#8221; a spokesperson for <em>The Mail on Sunday<\/em> previously shared in a statement to E! News. &#8220;Specifically, we categorically deny that the Duchess&#8217; letter was edited in any way that changed its meaning.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to NBC News, Meghan&#8217;s lawyers believe&nbsp;Thomas was &#8220;exploited&#8221; and &#8220;harassed&#8221; by the press.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Meghan&#8217;s attorney claims the press &#8220;finally manipulated this vulnerable man into giving interviews.&#8221; Meghan&#8217;s legal team is seeking damages for misuse of private information and breach of her copyright.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-4\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"58.543624161074\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"11.51677852349\">\n<p>Earlier this month,&nbsp;Prince Harry and Meghan announced they will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1142540\/prince-harry-and-meghan-markle-will-no-longer-engage-with-british-tabloids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">no longer &#8220;engage&#8221;<\/a> with four major UK tabloids including the <em>Mail<\/em>, the <em>Sun<\/em>, the <em>Express<\/em> and the <em>Mirror<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The policy is&nbsp;&#8220;not about avoiding criticism&#8221; or &#8220;about shutting down public conversation or censoring accurate reporting.&#8221; Instead, &#8220;Media have every right to report on and indeed have an opinion on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, good or bad.
