Checking In With the Winners of America&#8217;s Next Top Model Now"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"video-int-txt-0\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"34.788577154309\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-video-text\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"10.779559118236\">\n<p>Wanna be on top?&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For 24 straight seasons (sorry, cycles) hundreds of thousands of runway rookies very much did.&nbsp;Leggy natives of&nbsp;Joliet, Illinois and&nbsp;Grand Forks, North Dakota&nbsp;turned up to the <em>America&#8217;s Next Top Model<\/em> set to the learn the art of the smize and the booty touch and, most importantly, how to build a career in fashion \u00e1 la host <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/tyra_banks\">Tyra Banks<\/a><\/strong>, who very much dominated the field from&nbsp;1996 (the year she first appeared on the cover of the <em>Sports Illustrated<\/em> Swimsuit Issue) onward.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-2\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"62.743105950653\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"20.914368650218\">\n<p>Yes, as longtime creative director <strong>Jay Manuel<\/strong> has recently highlighted, some of the critiques and challenges certainly feel off-putting now\u2014and were every bit as questionable in the early 2000s. (Blackface in any iteration is simply not okay, a sentiment Banks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1150041\/tyra-banks-breaks-her-silence-on-problematic-america-s-next-top-model-moments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">no doubt agrees with<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tyrabanks\/status\/1258913638330462208?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1258913638330462208&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cnn.com%2F2020%2F05%2F11%2Fentertainment%2Ftyra-banks-antm-statement-intl-scli%2Findex.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">having tweeted<\/a>, &#8220;Looking back, those were some really off choices.&#8221;)&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But when the reality series premiered 17 years ago today, first on the now-defunct&nbsp;UPN, then&nbsp;The&nbsp;CW and, most recently, VH1, it dominated,&nbsp;at one point netting upwards of six million viewers eager to watch wannabe cover girls sob through their pixie cut &#8220;Ty-over&#8221; and attempt to nail the perfect commercial for LashBlast Mascara.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-3\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"38\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"16\">\n<p>Arguably, the show&#8217;s harshest critique is that the&nbsp;winning models never truly went on to supermodel status. Marrying&nbsp;<strong>Christopher Knight<\/strong>&nbsp;after they&nbsp;met on VH1&#8217;s&nbsp;<em>Surreal Life<\/em>,&nbsp;she and the&nbsp;<em>Brady Bunch<\/em>&nbsp;alum would go on to star on the network&#8217;s spinoff&nbsp;<em>My Fair Brady<\/em>&nbsp;before ending their five-year union in 2011.
