Rowling<\/a><\/strong> is&nbsp;facing backlash after being accused of making&nbsp;transphobic&nbsp;comments on social media.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday afternoon, the 54-year-old author shared an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.devex.com\/news\/sponsored\/opinion-creating-a-more-equal-post-covid-19-world-for-people-who-menstruate-97312#.XtwLnv0aEeR.twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">opinion article from a global health website titled<\/a>&nbsp;&#8220;Creating a More Equal Post-COVID-19 World for People Who Menstruate&#8221;<em>&nbsp;<\/em>and&nbsp;shared her confusion with the phrase &#8220;people who menstruate.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jk_rowling\/status\/1269382518362509313\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">she&nbsp;went on in her initial tweet<\/a>. &#8220;Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;<em>DevEx<\/em> article outlined the &#8220;many gendered aspects of the pandemic, including increased vulnerabilities to gender-based violence during lockdowns, and the risks faced by primary caretakers.&#8221; The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.devex.com\/news\/sponsored\/opinion-creating-a-more-equal-post-covid-19-world-for-people-who-menstruate-97312#.XtwLnv0aEeR.twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article&nbsp;stated that&nbsp;an estimated&nbsp;1.8 billion<\/a>&nbsp;girls, women and gender non-binary persons menstruate, adding that this &#8220;has not stopped because of the pandemic&#8221; and still require the necessary &#8220;menstrual materials, safe access to toilets, soap, water and private spaces in the face of lockdown living conditions that have eliminated privacy for many populations.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Quickly thereafter, the author became a trending topic on Twitter as many followers and people on social media began calling her out for her comments.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-2\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"66.124137931034\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"25.28275862069\">\n<p><em>Survivor<\/em>&#8216;s&nbsp;<strong>Zeke Smith<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/zekerchief\/with_replies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">replied<\/a>&nbsp;to the author <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/zekerchief\/status\/1269397034462658561\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">writing<\/a>, &#8220;Hi! I&#8217;m a man! I menstruate! Stop being an a&#8211;hole!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Smith appeared in the&nbsp;34th season of CBS&#8217;&nbsp;<em>Survivor: Game Changers<\/em>&nbsp;and was outed as transgender by a fellow contestant. Following his reply, a Twitter user asked Smith why he was &#8220;politicizing&#8221; how he identifies as. To which Smith <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/zekerchief\/status\/1269412927427063808\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">responded<\/a>, &#8220;[J.K. Rowling] is the one who is politicizing it by both denying that trans men exist and that all women menstruate! I do talk to my doctor about it! I have nothing to gain from it! My body just insists on doing it! I am not a woman!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Despite the backlash she received for her initial comments, Rowling continued to express her viewpoint.<\/p>\n<p>In a follow-up tweet, the author&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jk_rowling\/status\/1269389298664701952\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wrote<\/a>, &#8220;If sex isn&#8217;t real, there&#8217;s no same-sex attraction. If sex isn&#8217;t real, the lived reality of women globally is erased. I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives. It isn&#8217;t hate to speak the truth.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"video-int-txt-3\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"45.429586563307\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-video-text\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"34.657622739018\">\n<p>&#8220;The idea that women like me, who&#8217;ve been empathetic to trans people for decades, feeling kinship because they&#8217;re vulnerable in the same way as women &#8211; ie, to male violence &#8211; &#8216;hate&#8217; trans people because they think sex is real and has lived consequences &#8211; is a nonsense,&#8221; she wrote, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jk_rowling\/status\/1269406094595588096\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">referring to the backlash she was receiving online<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;<em>Fantastic Beasts<\/em> author then <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jk_rowling\/status\/1269407862234775552\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tweeted<\/a>, &#8220;I respect every trans person&#8217;s right to live any way that feels authentic and comfortable to them. I&#8217;d march with you if you were discriminated against on the basis of being trans. At the same time, my life has been shaped by being female. I do not believe it&#8217;s hateful to say so.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Singer and music producer&nbsp;<strong>Brad Walsh<\/strong> also responded to the author&#8217;s claims on Twitter, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BradWalsh\/status\/1269390182811394054\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">writing<\/a>, &#8220;You&#8217;re a smart person. How do you not yet understand the difference between sex and gender? The only way I can possibly explain your ignorance at this point is willfulness. It&#8217;s incredibly disappointing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He added, &#8220;Ok muting now because the TERFs are out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>TERF, or trans-exclusionary radical feminist, is a term that the author has been referred to as before. In December of last year, the author became a trending topic once again on Twitter after <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jk_rowling\/status\/1207646162813100033?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1207646162813100033&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nbcnews.com%2Ffeature%2Fnbc-out%2Fj-k-rowling-faces-backlash-after-tweeting-support-transphobic-researcher-n1104971\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">publicizing her support<\/a> for British researcher <strong>Maya Forstater&nbsp;<\/strong>who has also been criticized as being transphobic. According to&nbsp;<em>NBC News<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/feature\/nbc-out\/j-k-rowling-faces-backlash-after-tweeting-support-transphobic-researcher-n1104971\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">at the time<\/a>, in tweets and Slack messages from 2018, Forstater criticized proposed changes to the United Kingdom&#8217;s Gender Recognition Act of 2004 that allowed people to self-identify their gender.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"socialcontent-twitter-4\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" data-type=\"async\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"56.359756097561\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"9.6341463414634\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\" xml:lang=\"en\">If sex isn\u2019t real, there\u2019s no same-sex attraction. Why is she using that voice to die on a hill of transphobia? It is damaging and sad and makes zero sense. Is it really her belief that trans women somehow threaten her own selfhood? What is she so f-cking afraid of?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Actress&nbsp;<strong>Patti Harrison&nbsp;<\/strong>shared on social media <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Party_Harderson\/status\/1269421634726682626\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">that the author&#8217;s choice<\/a> to tweet about &#8220;trans women not being real women RIGHT NOW during BLM uproar really shows her depth of thought about trans people AND black people&#8230; I am gettin flu-like symptoms trying to imagine her thoughts (or lack-there-of) on&#8230; the intersection.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Singer, songwriter and model&nbsp;<strong>Kim Petras<\/strong>&nbsp;replied to Rowling and also criticized her&nbsp;for how she was utilizing her platform on Twitter, where the author has amassed over 14 million followers.&nbsp; &#8220;maam &#8230; read the room and post about BLM ! how is this the right time to go off on this ?&#8221;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kimpetras\/status\/1269411099801120774\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Petras wrote<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"socialcontent-twitter-6\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" data-type=\"async\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"53.904977375566\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"6.6199095022624\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\" xml:lang=\"en\">JK Rowling continues to align herself with an ideology which willfully distorts facts about gender identity and people who are trans. In 2020, there is no excuse for targeting trans people.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Despite the&nbsp;controversy Rowling&#8217;s tweets stirred, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jk_rowling\/status\/1269394077176541189\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">she went on to write<\/a>, &#8220;I&#8217;ve spent much of the last three years reading books, blogs and scientific papers by trans people, medics and gender specialists. I know exactly what the distinction is.
