She said that she was hired to &#8220;assist white editors with significantly less experience&#8221; than she herself has.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, she claimed she was &#8220;pushed in front of video as a display of diversity,&#8221; but her current salary hasn&#8217;t been increased to reflect her new responsibilities. &#8220;None of the people of color have been compensated,&#8221; she alleged.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Her statement&nbsp;comes hours after controversial pictures of Editor in&nbsp;Chief <strong>Adam Rapoport&nbsp;<\/strong>resurfaced on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tammieetc\/status\/1269999555480821760?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Twitter<\/a>.&nbsp;In a since-deleted photo shared to Instagram by artist <strong>Simone Shubuck<\/strong> and captioned, &#8220;#TBT me and my papi @rapo4 #boricua,&#8221; Rapoport is wearing a silver chain necklace and New York Yankees jersey. People online have accused Rapoport of wearing brown face, including El-Waylly and <em>BA<\/em>&#8216;s&nbsp;research director&nbsp;<strong>Joseph Hernandez<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-2\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"59.618122977346\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"11.728155339806\">\n<p>Hernandez shared on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/joeybear85\/status\/1270014872974168066\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Twitter<\/a>, &#8220;I&#8217;m likely courting internal reprimand, but I&#8217;m appalled and insulted by the EIC&#8217;s choice to embrace brownface in the photo making the rounds. I&#8217;ve spent my career celebrating Black, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian, and POC voices in food, and this feels like an erasure of that work.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-3\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"43\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"26\">\n<p>In consequence, Sohla,&nbsp;<strong>Molly Baz<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Christina Chaey<\/strong> and&nbsp;<strong>Priya Krishna&nbsp;<\/strong>among others,&nbsp;are demanding the resignation of Rapoport. &#8220;I demand not only the resignation of @rapoport but also to see BIPOC (black, indigenous, people of color) given fair titles, fair salaries and compensation for video appearances,&#8221;&nbsp;Sohla&nbsp;wrote on Instagram.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Priya, who is a contributing writer to both the&nbsp;<em>New York Times<\/em> and&nbsp;<em>Bon Appetit<\/em>, stated, &#8220;As a BA contributor, I can&#8217;t stay silent on this. This is f&#8211;ked up, plain and simple. It erases the work the BIPOC on staff have long been doing, behind the scenes. Yeah, let that sizzle in your spirit.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now that these two women, among others, have come forward with their accounts of working at&nbsp;<em>BA<\/em>, a publication owned by Cond\u00e9 Nast, other staff members are voicing their support for immediate change.&nbsp;<strong>Carla Lalli Music<\/strong> wrote on Instagram, &#8220;To be clear, it&#8217;s insane that @sohlae is not compensated for videos and I can&#8217;t contribute as a host until that changes.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Molly Baz, <strong>Andy Baraghani&nbsp;<\/strong>and others have also committed to no longer appearing on the YouTube channel until there is pay equity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Lalli Music, editor at large for the magazine, asked that&nbsp;<strong>Matt Duckor<\/strong>, Cond\u00e9 Nast&#8217;s head of programming, lifestyle and style, &#8220;address this issue.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"socialcontent-twitter-6\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" data-type=\"async\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"50.776923076923\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"7.0646153846154\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\" xml:lang=\"en\">In case you\u2019ve missed it: Not only is Sohla one of the only front facing Bon Appetit editors to denounce EIC Adam Rapoport doing brown face, apparently only white BA editors are paid for their video appearances. The&nbsp;<em>New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/04\/13\/business\/media\/conde-nast-coronavirus-layoffs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;in April that &#8220;just under half&#8221; of the company made over $100,000. Those with salaries on the larger end&nbsp;currently receive 10 to 20 percent less, while the company laid-off 100 staff members in May and furloughed others, <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2020\/digital\/news\/conde-nast-layoffs-100-employees-coronavirus-1234605421\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a> to <em>Variety<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In April, Duckor&nbsp;told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/culture\/2020\/4\/21\/21228555\/bon-appetit-test-kitchen-youtube-videos-coronavirus-quarantine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vox<\/a> that despite the economic downturn caused by the coronavirus pandemic and the political unrest in America, the&nbsp;<em>BA<\/em> test kitchen is seeing some of its highest ratings yet. He told the news site that their channel saw &#8220;76.7 million views in March, the most successful month in the channel&#8217;s history, up 5 percent over February.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"video-int-txt-8\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"41.202797202797\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-video-text\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"23.544455544456\">\n<p>But the pay disparities among their staffers are only the tip of the iceberg, according to former employees.&nbsp;<strong>Alex Lau<\/strong>, a former photographer for the outlet,&nbsp;shared on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/iamnotalexlau\/status\/1270038290645897219?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Twitter<\/a> that he felt the magazine continually failed to &#8220;make changes that my BIPOC coworkers and I constantly pushed for.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;i just got so tired. so tired of shooting the same reformation\/healthyish white girl bulls&#8211;t lifestyle that i knew nothing about, while rarely getting the opportunity to feature restaurants\/communities that actually deserved the spotlight,&#8221; he explained.
