E!&#8217;s Nina Parker Weighs In"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/akns-images.eonline.com\/eol_images\/Entire_Site\/20181013\/rs_600x600-181113122521-600-nina-parker-daily-pop-me-111318.jpg?fit=around|600:467&amp;crop=600:467;center,top&amp;output-quality=90\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"video-int-txt-0\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"46.229289940828\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-video-text\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"36.423076923077\">\n<p>Too little, too late?<\/p>\n<p><em>Friends<\/em> co-creator <strong>Marta Kauffman<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1159273\/friends-co-creator-marta-kauffman-admits-regrets-over-lack-of-diversity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recently&nbsp;apologized<\/a> for&nbsp;the lack of diversity on the long-running sitcom,&nbsp;explaining at the virtual 2020 ATX TV Festival,&nbsp;&#8220;I wish I knew then what I know today&#8230;We&#8217;ve always encouraged people of diversity in our company, but I didn&#8217;t do enough.&#8221; However, as E! hosts <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/morgan_stewart\">Morgan Stewart<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/nina_parker\">Nina Parker<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/scott_tweedie\">Scott Tweedie<\/a><\/strong> discussed on the latest <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/shows\/daily_pop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Daily Pop<\/a><\/em>, the acknowledgment seems to be, as Stewart put it, &#8220;a little too late.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Parker&nbsp;was in agreement with Stewart, saying, &#8220;I mean, Marta, welcome to the rest of the world, child. Like, what is she even talking about?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She continued, &#8220;I&#8217;m sorry, you guys. But like,&nbsp;people have been talking about this since <em>Friends<\/em>&#8216; inception.&nbsp;The fact that, okay, sure, all white people hanging out together in New York? That happens. But everybody in the street is white?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Parker asked Tweedie, who lives in New York, if the city looks &#8220;the way <em>Friends<\/em> depicted it,&#8221; to which he replied, &#8220;It is definitely not like that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-2\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"71\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"32\">\n<p>Parker went on to express her frustration, especially since she said Kauffman has &#8220;been in this industry&#8221; for awhile now.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Like, of course this has been something that should&#8217;ve been discussed,&#8221;&nbsp;she noted. &#8220;And in fact, especially in black communities, there were people who specifically boycotted&nbsp;<em>Friends<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>Seinfeld<\/em>&nbsp;because they felt like they weren&#8217;t represented on these mainstream shows that were based in cities where it&#8217;s prominently people of color.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Parker&nbsp;continued, &#8220;So, you know, I&#8217;m glad people are coming to the party but damnit, I hope you brought me a bottle of wine because it&#8217;s so late.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Stewart echoed Parker&#8217;s sentiment, adding that these conversations about representation in general &#8220;have been happening for years and years and years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And everybody now is just like, &#8216;Oh my god,'&#8221; Stewart said. &#8220;And myself included! I don&#8217;t want to pretend I&#8217;m not a part of that narrative as well. But it really is, like, the party has been going on.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-4\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"68.748447204969\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"30.229813664596\">\n<p>Tweedie pointed out that the entire situation &#8220;is a perfect example of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eonline.com\/shows\/kardashians\/news\/1158755\/kourtney-kardashian-says-she-has-a-responsibility-to-teach-her-kids-about-their-white-privilege\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">white privilege<\/a> lifestyle.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Because I was watching it when I&nbsp;grew up. I thought it was hilarious. I thought it was a brilliant show,&#8221; he explained. &#8220;And never did I ever think, &#8216;What if there&#8217;s a black child out there watching this show and going, &#8216;What sort of world is this?'&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Parker, however, said &#8220;that&#8217;s specifically how I felt watching TV in general growing up,&#8221; and &#8220;the fact that you guys didn&#8217;t notice, and it was the first thing I noticed&#8221; is something that needs to be a part of the ongoing conversation about race and representation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Not only in TV, but let&#8217;s talk about in work spaces.
