Television<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"35.725093632959\">\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/olivia_wilde\">Olivia Wilde<\/a><\/strong> says she was &#8220;lucky&#8221; to have starred on&nbsp;<em>The O.C.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The hit teen drama series aired on FOX between 2003 and 2007 and starred <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/mischa_barton\">Mischa Barton<\/a><\/strong> as&nbsp;main female lead&nbsp;Marissa, a wealthy teen. Wilde had originally auditioned for the role, and in season two, producers cast her&nbsp;as Alex, a bisexual character and&nbsp;Marissa&#8217;s love interest, who managed the gang&#8217;s local hotspot, The Bait Shop. It was one of her first acting parts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I used to dismiss <em>The O.C.<\/em>,&#8221; Wilde&nbsp;told the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/05\/16\/movies\/olivia-wilde-booksmart.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Times<\/a><\/em> in comments posted on Thursday. &#8220;I&#8217;d be like, &#8216;I did a teen soap\u2014what an embarrassment.&#8217; And now I think, ah, that was really formative and I&#8217;m lucky I got to do that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, Wilde said on the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=q9sYB9PNVvc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Keep It<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;podcast she&nbsp;&#8220;really understand the phenomenon&#8221; that <em>The O.C.<\/em>&nbsp;&#8220;would be or would become.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was just like, 19, just working, shooting this movie <em>Alpha Dog<\/em> on the weekends and I was going back and forth between these sets and then it came out,&#8221; she said. &#8220;My role was kind of revealed to the world and it was the sensational storyline of like queer love between two teenage girls on this like, American soap. At the time I was like, &#8216;Well this should be normal. Why is it such a big deal?&#8217; But people either got riled up in a good way or got riled up in a bad way. And I was like, &#8216;Well this is an important conversation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-2\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"60.5\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"11\">\n<p>&#8220;And then, over the years the significance became clear to me when people would come up to me on the street\u2014it still happens all the time\u2014and say, &#8216;Your role on the show helped me come out to my family, helped me feel comfortable with my friends and helped me understand I could be like this like, I can kind of own my sexuality in a comfortable way.&#8217; I was like, &#8216;Whoa, that&#8217;s an honor.'&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-4\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"57.692405063291\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"8.726582278481\">\n<p>Wilde had made similar comments in an interview with LGBTQ+ outlet <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.advocate.com\/current-issue\/2016\/1\/07\/list-interview-olivia-wilde\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Advocate<\/a><\/em> in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When I started acting and one of my first jobs was playing a bisexual teenager on&nbsp;<em>The O.C.,<\/em>&nbsp;nothing about it scared or shocked me,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I was just surprised by the enormity of the response. I still have women coming up to tell me they started discovering their own sexuality because of&nbsp;<em>The O.C.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-6\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"58\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"6\">\n<p>After&nbsp;<em>The O.C.<\/em> ended its run, Wilde would go on to play more sexualized supporting roles in films such as&nbsp;<em>TRON: Legacy<\/em> and&nbsp;<em>Cowboys &amp; Aliens<\/em> and shows like&nbsp;<em>House<\/em>\u2014in which she also played a bisexual character, and HBO&#8217;s short-lived &#8217;70s-themed drama&nbsp;<em>Vinyl<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"video-int-txt-7\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"36.066536203523\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-video-text\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"15.185909980431\">\n<p>Her new movie <em>Booksmart<\/em> puts her behind the camera.
