{"id":23864,"date":"2019-05-17T12:42:21","date_gmt":"2019-05-17T18:42:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/b1042424"},"modified":"2019-05-17T12:42:21","modified_gmt":"2019-05-17T18:42:21","slug":"constance-wu-isnt-the-only-one-when-tv-stars-bite-the-hand-that-feeds-them","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kift\/music-news\/constance-wu-isnt-the-only-one-when-tv-stars-bite-the-hand-that-feeds-them\/","title":{"rendered":"Constance Wu Isn&#8217;t the Only One: When TV Stars Bite the Hand That Feeds Them"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"video-int-txt-0\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"46.692420897719\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-video-text\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"36.210448859455\">\n<p>Remember the old adage, &#8220;If you have nothing nice to say, then say nothing at all&#8221;? <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/constance_wu\">Constance Wu<\/a><\/strong> sure didn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s been a week since the <em>Fresh Off the Boat<\/em> star took to social media to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1040567\/is-constance-wu-mad-that-fresh-off-the-boat-got-renewed?query=constance%20wu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">express her dismay<\/a> over the news that ABC had&#8230;renewed the sitcom that made her a breakout star for a sixth season, leaving the rest of us to wonder what, exactly, she was thinking.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;F&#8211;king hell,&#8221; Wu tweeted before telling a fan who said the renewal was great news, &#8220;No it&#8217;s not.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Very quickly, it was clear that she&#8217;d rubbed plenty of people the wrong way. &#8220;Someone please tell Constance Wu that Melissa McCarthy was on <em>Mike &amp; Molly<\/em> until 2016 and everything seems to be OK,&#8221; <em>Keep It<\/em> podcast co-host <strong>Louis Virtel<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/louisvirtel\/status\/1126976828957028352\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tweeted<\/a>. When Fox renewed <em>The Orville<\/em> for a third season, star and creator <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/seth_macfarlane\">Seth MacFarlane<\/a><\/strong> shared the good news with a tweet that read, &#8220;Oh f&#8211;king goddamn hell f&#8211;kf&#8211;kdicks&#8211;t!&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In fact, &#8220;f&#8211;king hell&#8221; became a bit of a meme for most folks celebrating their renewal announcements.<\/p>\n<p>It became clear that Wu needed to clarify things\u2014and fast.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>First she <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ConstanceWu\/status\/1127001701276368896?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1127001701276368896&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.eonline.com%2Fnews%2F1040567%2Fis-constance-wu-mad-that-fresh-off-the-boat-got-renewed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">offered this<\/a>:&nbsp;&#8220;Todays tweets were on the heels of rough day &amp; were ill timed w\/the news of the show. Plz know, Im so grateful for FOTB renewal. I love the cast &amp;c rew. Im proud to be a part of it. For all the fans support, thank u &amp; for all who support my casual use of the word f&#8211;k\u2014thank u too.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-2\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"57.740449438202\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"7.8292134831461\">\n<p>And when it became clear that that wouldn&#8217;t be enough, Wu issued <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1040648\/constance-wu-clarifies-comments-about-fresh-off-the-boat-renewal-amid-backlash?query=constance%20wu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a lengthy statement<\/a> the following day in which she explained that the renewal had forced her to walk away from a new role that would&#8217;ve been more artistically challenging than the comfortable routine she&#8217;d settled into playing matriarch Jessica Huang for the past five seasons. As she explained, that&#8217;s what she was <em>actually<\/em> dismayed over.&nbsp;&#8220;But I understand how that could feel interconnected and could get muddled,&#8221; she said. &#8220;So here is me unmuddling it with my truth: FOTB is a great show that I&#8217;m proud of and that I enjoy. I&#8217;ve gotten to fully explore my character and I know her like the back of my hand. So playing Jessica is fun and easy and pleasant. I get to work with a kind and pleasant cast\/crew. Which makes it all quite enjoyable\u2014So obviously I don&#8217;t dislike doing a show that is fun and easy and pleasant.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-3\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"67.911047345768\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"27.558106169297\">\n<p>&#8220;People &#8216;assumed&#8217; that that meant I don&#8217;t love and enjoy FOTB,&#8221; she continued.&nbsp;&#8216;But I do love and enjoy it. I hope you believe me. People can hold conflicting feelings in their hearts\u2014that conflict is a part of being human. So I can both love the show\/cast\/crew but at the same time be disappointed that I lost that unrelated job. I appreciate those who have given me the space and faith to believe what I say about both parts of my heart. Thank you. It&#8217;s meaningful when you make the choice to believe women.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While ABC has no plans of replacing their seemingly ungrateful star\u2014<strong>Karey Burke<\/strong>, president of ABC Entertainment, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1041276\/will-abc-recast-constance-wu-following-her-fresh-off-the-boat-tweets?query=constance%20wu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told press<\/a> this week &#8220;I&#8217;m going to choose to believe Constance&#8217;s most recent communication about the show, that she is happy to return, and the cast and crew is happy to have her back and we&#8217;re thrilled to keep her in the show&#8221;\u2014that hasn&#8217;t stopped those at her network from continuing to poke fun at her.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>During his annual appearance at ABC&#8217;s Upfronts presentation, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/jimmy_kimmel\">Jimmy Kimmel<\/a><\/strong> displayed her tweets on the giant screen behind him in David Geffen Hall at NYC&#8217;s Lincoln Center while he cracked,&nbsp;&#8220;Only on&nbsp;ABC is getting your show picked up the worst thing that can happen to you. Sorry Constance, at least you got 9,300 likes&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Wu is far from the first TV star to bite the proverbial hand that feeds her, however. For a while at least. But by season three, amid reports of increasing tension between her and co-star <strong>Alyssa Milano<\/strong>, Doherty&#8217;s Prue Haliwell was written out of the series. On her way out, she offered <em>Entertainment Tonight<\/em> an exclusive interview about her hasty exit, saying,&nbsp;&#8220;There was too much drama on the set and not enough passion for the work. You know, I&#8217;m 30 years old and I don&#8217;t have time for drama in my life anymore.&#8221; She also took the opportunity to slam the show&nbsp;further while speaking with <em>Movieline<\/em> magazine, saying that the &#8220;couple of moments&#8221; on the show where she &#8220;gave the most brutally honest performance I ever could have given as an actor&#8221; weren&#8217;t given &#8220;their proper due, because they were on&nbsp;<em>Charmed<\/em>. Speaking with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalspy.com\/tv\/ustv\/a396952\/vampire-diaries-star-paul-wesley-i-didnt-buy-season-three-end\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Digital Spy<\/a> in August 2012, he admitted,&nbsp;&#8220;I don&#8217;t buy it. I&#8217;ll be completely honest. The writers are probably going to get mad at me! I don&#8217;t buy it, but it is what it is and so we have to live with it.&#8221; And live with it he did. But leading into the third season, he failed to show up for a table read and subsequently did not return to the show. Weeks prior to his sudden departure, Patinkin spoke with journalists at the Monte Carlo Television Festival in June 2007, where he made his stance on the grim show rather clear.&nbsp;&#8220;I loathe those violent images and I want no part of that type of violence. I thought it was something very different. I never thought they were going to kill and rape all these women every night, every day, week after week, year after year. It was very destructive to my soul and my personality. After repeated&nbsp;clashes over the material he was being given, creator <strong>Dan Harmon<\/strong> made public scathing voicemails he&#8217;d received from Chase in 2012. Released by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.celebuzz.com\/2012-04-10\/its-just-a-fcking-mediocre-sitcom-second-chevy-chase-recording-emerges-rips-his-own-show-community-exclusive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Celebuzz<\/a>, one recording found Chase saying, &#8220;It&#8217;s just a f&#8211;king mediocre sitcom! I want people to laugh and this isn&#8217;t funny. It ain&#8217;t funny to me because I&#8217;m 67-years-old and I&#8217;ve been doing this a long time. I&#8217;ve been making a lot of people laugh a lot better than this.&#8221; Speaking with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/community-chevy-chase_n_1393823\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Huffington Post<\/a> that same year, he slammed the show as &#8220;like being relegated to hell and watching <em>Howdy Doody<\/em> for the rest of your life.&#8221; &#8220;It&#8217;s not particularly necessary,&#8221; he added. I think it happened around season two. But she got perhaps a little too big for her britches and, in 2008, declined to submit herself for Emmy consideration, explaining in a statement, &#8220;I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination and in an effort to maintain the integrity organization, I withdrew my name from contention. The decision forced CBS and Warner Bros. Television to put the show on hiatus for an indefinite period of time, effectively canceling the remainder of the show&#8217;s eighth season. And&nbsp;after creator <strong>Chuck Lorre<\/strong>, who&#8217;d apparently had enough of his leading man&#8217;s destructive ways, wrote in one of his famed vanity cards that if Sheen outlived him, he&#8217;d be pissed, Sheen lost it. He called Lorre &#8220;a contaminated little maggot,&#8221; made thinly-veiled anti-Semitic references to the man by calling him Haim Levine (Lorre&#8217;s real name is Charles Michael Levine), and took credit for the show&#8217;s success, ranting on the <em>Alex Jones Show<\/em>,&nbsp;I&#8217;ve spent, &#8220;I think, close to the last decade, I don&#8217;t know, effortlessly and magically converting your tin can into pure gold. And the gratitude I get is this charlatan chose not to do his job, which is to write.&#8221; After more interviews with <em>20\/20, Today<\/em> and <em>Piers Morgan Tonight<\/em>, in which he repeatedly slammed Lorre and the network, his contract was terminated on March 7, with CBS and WBTV citing &#8220;moral turpitude&#8221; as their main reason. After filing a $100 million lawsuit against Lorre and WBTV, he&nbsp;continued to slam both the show and his replacement <strong>Ashton Kutcher<\/strong>, telling TMZ,&nbsp;&#8220;I&#8217;m tired of lying. I&#8217;m tired of pretending the show doesn&#8217;t suck. When the show earned a spinoff from the CW, transplanting the Mikaelson family down to New Orleans for <em>The Originals<\/em>, <strong>Ian Somerhalder<\/strong> made it known that he wasn&#8217;t exactly over the moon with the idea. In 2012, <strong>Angus T. Jones<\/strong>, who&#8217;d starred as the titular half-man Jake&nbsp;since he was 10 years old, found religion with the Seventh-day Adventist movement and released <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KTju7uI8-1o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a testimonial video<\/a> for Forerunner Christian Church in which he actively pleaded with fans of the CBS comedy to walk away from a show he no longer felt he could be a part of.&nbsp;&#8220;If you watch&nbsp;<em>Two and a Half Men<\/em>, please stop watching&nbsp;<em>Two and a Half Men<\/em>,&#8221; he said.&nbsp;I&#8217;m on <em>Two and a Half Men<\/em>, and I don&#8217;t want to be on it.
