Squint, and Angelina Jolie<\/a><\/strong>is back to her old life.<\/p>\n

She’s shooting a movie on location, she’s surrounded most of the time by her six kids, and she’s celebrating another birthday looking as tr\u00e8s jolie<\/em> as ever.<\/p>\n

But this time, she has to put the kids on a plane now and again so they can go back to Los Angeles to visit their father, her ex-husband, Brad Pitt<\/a><\/strong>. That’s something both actors have had to get used to in recent years\u2014coordinating when, and how much, Pitt gets to see the children.<\/p>\n

Jolie and Pitt became legally single<\/a> in April after a lengthy, sporadically acrimonious (and ongoing) divorce process<\/a> and, while “tension and struggles” remain, they’re in complete agreement that they need to put their children first, a source says.<\/p>\n

Since she first filed for divorce in September 2016, Jolie has been living the 24\/7 single-parent life, mixing birthday parties, sushi dinners and Target runs in with her work schedule\u2014which, despite some past equivocation about whether she still desired to act, once again includes a slate of movies featuring her on<\/em> the screen.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

In fact, Jolie has relocated to Albuquerque, N.M., for the time being with Maddox<\/strong>, Zahara<\/strong>, Shiloh<\/strong>, Pax<\/strong>, Knox<\/strong> and Vivienne Jolie-Pitt <\/strong>to make the thriller Those Who Wish Me<\/em> Dead<\/em>, being directed by Taylor Sheridan<\/strong> based on a novel of the same name, <\/em>with a cast that also includes Nicholas Hoult<\/a><\/strong>and Tyler Perry<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil<\/em>, which she shot last year in London, is due in theaters on Oct. 18, and Jolie reportedly in talks<\/a> to join the sprawling Marvel universe in the upcoming The Eternals<\/em>, which would co-star Richard Madden<\/a><\/strong>and, MCU Cosmic reports<\/a>, possibly Keanu Reeves<\/a><\/strong>. Moreover, Come Away<\/em>, described as a prequel to the stories of Peter Pan <\/em>and Alice in Wonderland<\/em>, which she was filming last fall<\/a> with Gugu Mbatha-Raw<\/strong> and also produced, is in post-production.<\/p>\n

“Angelina is incredible,” Maleficent<\/em> co-star Elle Fanning told E! News at the iHeart Radio Music Awards in March. “She is super hands-on with the whole production. It’s amazing to watch her work.”<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

“It’s so funny,” Fanning also told Elle<\/em><\/a> last fall, “because people always ask, ‘Oh, does she give you advice all the time?’ and it’s not so much like that. I think just watching her\u2026and seeing what a great mother she is. All of her kids are there and she’s walking around\u2014like, last time I remember, she was walking around in the whole Maleficent outfit with two kids on each arm. She’s a working woman and a mother, and that example is such a great one for me to see. You can do it all.”<\/p>\n

So Jolie is busier than ever after taking a break from acting<\/a> but not from all of her other pursuits, which for the past three years have included directing (the Golden Globe-nominated First They Killed My Father<\/em>), producing, traveling as a Special Envoy for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and lecturing at the London School of Economics.<\/p>\n

And, at the start, middle and end of every day: the work of parenting.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

In addition to all the everyday stuff, such as shopping at Whole Foods<\/a> and going out for sushi, last week Jolie threw a 13th birthday party for Shiloh at The Basement LA, one of those very de rigeur establishments that feature escape rooms.<\/p>\n

We’re told that Shiloh, her siblings and a group of friends made it out of all four rooms on offer, watched a magician perform and enjoyed birthday cake.<\/p>\n

But this is a fun-and-adventure-loving family, whether it was for Maddox with his 9th birthday at Go Kart World, the cruise on the Seine in Paris they took when Pax turned 7 or their outing to Thorpe Park in London<\/a> for Jolie’s 43rd birthday a year ago. Or when she went indoor climbing with Knox and Vivienne in January, for kicks!<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

The Jolie-Pitt kid red carpet sightings have also ramped up as the children have gotten older (the youngest, twins Knox and Vivienne, will be 11 in July). They travel just about everywhere with their mom, and more often than not she’s on the move because of an event, be it the Toronto International Film Festival or the U.N. Correspondents Association Awards, both of which she brought her children to in 2017.<\/p>\n

But seemingly more and more they’ve also been taking advantage of all the family-friendly offerings at their feet, such as the animation-honoring Annie Awards last year or the Hollywood premiere of <\/a>Dumbo<\/a> <\/em>in March.<\/p>\n

According to sources, the kids are also now living the life in Albuquerque<\/a>, visiting their mom on set and enjoying all the comforts of home, of which there are many, even while living in a rented house.<\/p>\n

“They have taken multiple Target runs and love shopping and going out to eat,” a source shared. “Angelina spoils them with carts full of toys and sporting goods. She loves to indulge them with new things as much as she can. She has had to work a lot so she wanted them to have fun and stay busy. When they arrived, they set up their house with all kinds of new pets, stuff for their rooms and toys.”<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

Though their base is wherever their mom is these days, the kids will be going to L.A. to see their dad this summer.<\/p>\n

Last week another source told E! News that the kids had been visiting Pitt at home regularly, “and he does whatever he can to make their time together positive. Each relationship [he has with each child] is different, and some are better<\/a> than others.”<\/p>\n

As for Pitt and Jolie, the source shared, “there’s a lot of ongoing therapy and meetings to try and make decisions together and keep things consistent for the kids. They do not agree on a lot but they do both want the kids to be happy.”<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

And that’s been the overarching theme since the stars went their separate ways after two years of marriage and more than 11 years together. Their divorce proceedings started with Jolie and Pitt estranged to the point that they only communicated through lawyers, though relations eventually thawed.<\/p>\n

“It’s just been the hardest time, and we’re just kind of coming up for air,” Jolie told<\/a> Vanity Fair<\/a> <\/em>in the summer of 2017 in her first extensive sit-down to touch on her personal life after the breakup. “This is a big jump forward for us, and we’re all trying to do our best to heal our family.”<\/p>\n

At the time she and the kids had just moved into an 11,000-square-foot mansion in L.A.’s Los Feliz neighborhood, a geographically purposeful location in that it’s a short drive from Pitt’s house\u2014which remains the house he and Jolie lived in together when they weren’t living in France, or London or New Orleans, or Malibu or any of the other places the family of eight hung their hats for an extended period of time.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

Pitt spent most of his 2017 working close to home, shooting the sci-fi thriller Ad<\/em> Astra<\/em>, now due out in September, <\/em>and Quentin Tarantino<\/a><\/strong>‘s latest, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood<\/em>, in the L.A. area.<\/p>\n

Aside from a revealing interview<\/a> in the spring of 2017 with GQ Style<\/em>, in which he talked about getting sober and his newfound appreciation for therapy, Pitt has let the occasional sighting of him speak for itself. His last movie (not including his\u2014spoiler alert\u2014Deadpool 2<\/em> cameo) was Netflix’s War Machine<\/em>, which came out two years ago. But with all eyes on the A-list-packed Once Upon a Time<\/em>, starting with the reported six-minute standing ovation it received in May at the Cannes Film Festival, he’s got a splashy summer ahead. The film hits U.S. theaters July 26, so the hype will only be building until then.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

But though she hasn’t exactly been a shrinking violet, and has done everything from teach in London to travel to Peru<\/a> to meet with Venezuelan refugees, 2019 marks just as much of a movie-star return for Jolie as it does for Pitt. <\/p>\n

While she prefers to use any attention paid to her, which is a lot, to highlight important causes, it’s been awhile since she’s just been able to talk about something fun, like acting in a Disney film.<\/p>\n

Waylaid by her divorce, house-hunting, health concerns such as hypertension and a bout with Bell’s palsy that erupted in the wake of the split, and once again finding herself at the center of one of the biggest celebrity news stories of the decade, which unfolded while she was promoting First They Killed My Father<\/em>, a very personal project for her, Jolie also had to balance on the oh-so-precarious tightrope that is a woman trying to maintain her composure<\/a>\u2014publicly and privately\u2014when half the world wants to file her back under “V” for “villain.”<\/p>\n

“We care for each other and care about our family, and we are both working towards the same goal,” Jolie told Vanity Fair<\/em>, never going into detail about anything Pitt (or she herself) did to hasten the split, saying only that “things got bad” in the summer of 2016. <\/p>\n

She resorted to having her emotional moments in private because, having witnessed her own parents’ divorce, “I was very worried about my mother, growing up\u2014a lot. I do not want my children to be worried about me. I think it’s very important to cry in the shower and not in front of them. They need to know that everything’s going to be all right even when you’re not sure it is.”<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

Acknowledging the possibly stress-related physical repercussions she’d been noticing, which also included drier skin and some new gray hairs, Jolie said, “I can’t tell if it’s menopause or if it’s just been the year I’ve had.” Overall, however, “I actually feel more of a woman because I feel like I’m being smart about my choices, and I’m putting my family first, and I’m in charge of my life and my health. I think that’s<\/em> what makes a woman complete.”<\/p>\n

After opening up about having her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed as a preventative measure after a cancer scare, and since her mother died of ovarian cancer at only 56 years old, Jolie told the Daily Telegraph<\/em><\/a> in 2015, “I actually love being in menopause. I haven’t had a terrible reaction to it, so I’m very fortunate. I feel older, and I feel settled being older. I feel happy that I’ve grown up. I don’t want to be young again.”<\/p>\n

And just being around the kids is therapeutic. “They really help me so much,” Jolie told the New York Times<\/em><\/a>. “We’re really such a unit. They’re the best friends I’ve ever had. Nobody in my life has ever stood by me more.”<\/p>\n

Having been divorced twice before, part of moving on this time has included more present support<\/a> from her father, Jon Voight<\/a><\/strong>, who split up with Jolie’s mother, Marcheline Bertrand<\/strong>, when their daughter was 2 and son, James Haven<\/strong>, about 4. Bertrand raised them on her own for the most part, but Voight nurtured his daughter’s acting career: While she first attended the Oscars with him at 10, Jolie’s movie debut was at 7 years old in 1982’s Lookin’ to Get Out<\/em>, starring her father. <\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

Jolie thanked her father when she won her Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Girl Interrupted<\/em> in 2000 but after Tomb Raider<\/em>, in which Voight played her father, came out, their relationship seemed to disintegrate. She told Premiere <\/em>in 2004, “My father and I don’t speak.” It wasn’t until 2010 that Jolie acknowledged to <\/a>Parade<\/a> <\/em>that she and Voight were making efforts to reconcile, and that summer he attended the L.A. premiere of her movie Salt<\/em> with son James.<\/p>\n

“He’s met the kids and they’ve met him, and I think that’s important that they can do that,” Jolie told Marie Claire<\/em> toward the end of 2011. “We’re in each other’s lives, but we don’t, as a rule, discuss the past.”<\/p>\n

Relations have sounded a lot cozier lately.<\/p>\n

Voight turned up at the New York premiere of First They Killed My Father <\/em>in September 2017 and he and his daughter have been spotted going out to dinner.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

“Jon and I have gotten to know each other\u2014through grandchildren now,” Jolie said on a December 2017 episode<\/a> of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter<\/a><\/em> podcast<\/a> last year. “We’re finding a new relationship and it’s very, very nice.<\/p>\n

“But we’ve had some difficulties,” she added, “and it’s good that we’re\u2014through art is a way we’ve been able to talk. We’ve found it’s the common language. We don’t really talk politics well. We talk art very well.” (Voight, an Oscar winner in 1979 for Coming Home <\/em>and in 2014 a Golden Globe winner for playing Liev Schreiber<\/a><\/strong>‘s father on Ray Donovan<\/em>, is a staunch conservative these days<\/a> and has been a vocal supporter<\/a> of President Trump.)<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Jolie, like many others these days, thinks a lot about politics\u2014enough so that it wasn’t an absolute no when asked recently whether or not she’d ever consider running for office.<\/p>\n

“Honestly, if you asked me 20 years ago, I would’ve laughed,” she said while guest-editing BBC Radio 4’s Today<\/em><\/a> in December. “I really don’t know. I always say I’ll go where I’m needed. I don’t know if I’m fit for politics. But then I’ve also joked that I don’t know if I have a skeleton left in my closet, so I’m pretty open and out there.”<\/p>\n

She added, “I sit in a very interesting place of being able to get a lot done without a title and without it being about myself or my policies. So for now, I’ll stay quiet.”<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

Meanwhile, Jolie has preferred to be “out there” on an as-needed basis, though of course she’s in higher demand than that.<\/p>\n

But despite being a tabloid magnet for more than two decades now, leading a public life for the sake of being famous was never Jolie’s goal.<\/p>\n

She credits her first visit to Cambodia to shoot Tomb Raider<\/em>, after which she started her UN work and adopted her first child, Maddox, with changing her life. Since becoming a parent, she says, she has been able to power past a media circus that has considered her a main attraction for years\u2014and never more so than when she emerged from the making of Mr. and Mrs. Smith <\/em>in 2004 in love with Brad Pitt and he subsequently ended his marriage to Jennifer Aniston<\/a><\/strong>with relative ease.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

“When you see people that have suffered so much, if only they had a spotlight on them, you then don’t complain so much about your stupid little problems,” Jolie told Awards Chatter<\/em> host Scott Feinberg. “You don’t wake up and think, Oh, it’s so difficult for me because of x, y, and z. You simply don’t. You think, Alright, I have an opportunity to speak publicly. Now I have  something to say.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

“Finally, I have something to say. And I have something that needs some attention and some focus, and I now am starting to form a voice. And so, in those years, I would find my voice, and find my purpose, and above all I found Maddox, and the choice when you choose to become a parent, you choose to, from that moment on, the center of your world is the child, right? So in one moment you’re so caught up in whatever it is that you’re worried about\u2014and the next minute, it’s as long as this person is OK, nothing else matters.’ And it’s extremely freeing.”<\/p>\n

So even when she was shooting Mr. & Mrs. Smith<\/em>, her mindset was “nothing else mattered,” Jolie explained. “So nothing would, from that moment on\u2014and still doesn’t\u2014really get under my skin in any way like it used to. As long as he’s healthy, [all the kids are] healthy, it’s OK.”<\/p>\n

That attitude continues to come in handy. While Pitt’s been the subject of more high-profile, who’s-he-dating headlines<\/a> than Jolie has since the split, it’s not as if she hasn’t been speculatively linked to a host of gentlemen, though so far their first dates have been taking place on the cover of supermarket tabloids.<\/p>\n

For now, Jolie is focused on her kids and her work, all with an eye on moving on. It’s easier than waiting for the circus to leave town.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n
