Richardson, The Denver Post<\/em><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Shannon Watts folded laundry as news of the horrific Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting that killed 20 children and six adults flashed across her television screen in 2012, rattling something inside the mother of five that couldn\u2019t be stifled. That newfound, burning activism would soon position the Colorado woman to identify herself as the National Rifle Association\u2019s worst nightmare.<\/p>\n<p>Watts scoured Facebook after the Sandy Hook shooting, looking to join a group similar to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madd.org\/\">Mothers Against Drunk Driving<\/a> but with a focus on ending gun violence. When she couldn\u2019t find what she was looking for, she made her own. The group became <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MomsDemandAction\/\">Moms Demand Action<\/a>, now one of the most well-known gun control organizations in the nation with almost six million supporters. Watts remains at the helm, pushing through death threats and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BxNt2kiHUI-\/\">personal call-outs from the NRA<\/a> to help pass gun-control legislation in statehouses around the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know anything about policy or organizing,\u201d Watts said. \u201cI just knew more guns was not the solution. I only had 75 Facebook friends, but it was like lightning in a bottle. People kept finding and joining the group.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The online conversation evolved into an offline movement.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2019\/06\/09\/shannon-watts-moms-demand-action-founder-boulder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Read the full story on denverpost.com.
