I discovered I\u2019m on the upper range of normal, not quite prediabetes but too close for comfort.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Since my father and grandmother had diabetes, this is a wake-up call for me to lose the extra weight I\u2019ve blithely become accustomed to. It\u2019s time to make better food choices. I\u2019ve always thought of myself as a whole-foods cook. However, my love of fudge-covered Oreos and bread of any variety counteracted my best clean-eating efforts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">So this week, I\u2019ve called in my childhood friend Tara Baroody. Throughout high school, we swam on the same team in Fort Lauderdale. Tara now lives in Boulder. She\u2019s a phenomenal cook and a vegan. Her recipes will inspire you and me to reset our diets and discover how delicious real food can be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Take it away, Tara!<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Every year, it\u2019s the same thing. I gain a few pounds for the winter. Yes, I eat richer, fattier foods, but I live in a cold climate and need a little more on my bones. Otherwise, I freeze for the winter. By the first light of spring, I want to take it off. So, I go through what has now become a routine, spring cleanse. It\u2019s simple, easy to follow and just cleaning eating.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Chances are at least part of the lifestyle will stick with you. Unlike a lot of the diets and cleanses out there, this is a lifestyle that can be sustainable with very little effort.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Here is the basic outline:<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Eat fruits and vegetables. Eat as many colorful foods as possible. That\u2019s it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Everything else is an additional side. You have free reign to create any kind of meal you want with your box of \u201cpaints,\u201d with a few guidelines:<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u25cf Daily handful of nuts or seeds, or scoop of nut butter or coconut butter<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u25cf Tea and coffee<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u25cf Mineral-rich salt (Celtic or Himalayan pink salt are my preferences)<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u25cf Plant-based protein powder for morning smoothies<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u25cf Water<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u25cf Only fresh-pressed juice<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u25cf Only Stevia as a sweetener<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u25cf Limit alcohol<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u25cf Limit oils to extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil for cooking<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u25cf No dairy<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Ideal meals include salads or rice with steamed, lightly saut\u00e9ed or roasted vegetables.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Try eating like this for two weeks. Guaranteed you will have a little glow in your skin and pep in your stride. You might lose a few pounds.
