Three students at Middle Park High School have been named
\nsemi-finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Competition.<\/p>\n
Gabe Loberg, Lela Myers and Jack Orear were some of the
\nhighest-scoring students on the preliminary SAT, making them semi-finalists in this
\nnational competition.<\/p>\n
Three students in the class of 91 seniors representing the
\nschool is a \u201cstatistical anomaly,\u201d according to Ben Polonowski, Middle Park
\nHigh School counselor.<\/p>\n
Only 241 students in the state of Colorado were named
\nsemi-finalists and 16,000 in the entire country, which represents less than one
\npercent of high school seniors.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis reflects the hard work of the students at Middle Park,
\nbut also the work of the community they are a part of,\u201d Polonowski said.<\/p>\n
All three students are deeply involved in extracurricular
\nactivities.<\/p>\n
Gabe Loberg plans to go to a small college to play football.
\nHe wants to study exercise science to pursue a career in physical therapy.<\/p>\n
Lela Myers has lived in Grand County her entire life and
\nwrites fiction as a hobby. She has played soccer since kindergarten and has
\nbeen in every theater production Middle Park has put on. She\u2019s unsure about her
\ncollege plans.<\/p>\n
Jack Orear is captain of the soccer team and participates in
\nthe school\u2019s ski racing team. He\u2019s not yet sure about his future college plans
\neither, except that he wants to go to college.<\/p>\n
Polonowski said being a semi-finalist in this competition
\nputs these three students near the top with academic strength. Being even a
\nsemi-finalist in the competition reflects future success.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019re great students,\u201d Polonowski said. \u201cThey\u2019re heavily
\ninvolved in the school community.\u201d<\/p>\n
About 15,000 of the semi-finalists will advance to finalist
\nlevel, which the students will find out about in February. These finalists will
\nhave an opportunity to be awarded various scholarships.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
