{"id":33021,"date":"2019-10-15T16:03:19","date_gmt":"2019-10-15T22:03:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.skyhinews.com\/?p=60844"},"modified":"2019-10-15T16:03:19","modified_gmt":"2019-10-15T22:03:19","slug":"3-mphs-students-named-semi-finalists-in-scholarship-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kift\/local-news\/3-mphs-students-named-semi-finalists-in-scholarship-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"3 MPHS students named semi-finalists in scholarship competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Three students at Middle Park High School have been named<br \/>\nsemi-finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Competition.<\/p>\n<p>Gabe Loberg, Lela Myers and Jack Orear were some of the<br \/>\nhighest-scoring students on the preliminary SAT, making them semi-finalists in this<br \/>\nnational competition.<\/p>\n<p>Three students in the class of 91 seniors representing the<br \/>\nschool is a \u201cstatistical anomaly,\u201d according to Ben Polonowski, Middle Park<br \/>\nHigh School counselor.<\/p>\n<p>Only 241 students in the state of Colorado were named<br \/>\nsemi-finalists and 16,000 in the entire country, which represents less than one<br \/>\npercent of high school seniors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis reflects the hard work of the students at Middle Park,<br \/>\nbut also the work of the community they are a part of,\u201d Polonowski said.<\/p>\n<p>All three students are deeply involved in extracurricular<br \/>\nactivities.<\/p>\n<p>Gabe Loberg plans to go to a small college to play football.<br \/>\nHe wants to study exercise science to pursue a career in physical therapy.<\/p>\n<p>Lela Myers has lived in Grand County her entire life and<br \/>\nwrites fiction as a hobby. She has played soccer since kindergarten and has<br \/>\nbeen in every theater production Middle Park has put on. She\u2019s unsure about her<br \/>\ncollege plans.<\/p>\n<p>Jack Orear is captain of the soccer team and participates in<br \/>\nthe school\u2019s ski racing team. He\u2019s not yet sure about his future college plans<br \/>\neither, except that he wants to go to college.<\/p>\n<p>Polonowski said being a semi-finalist in this competition<br \/>\nputs these three students near the top with academic strength. Being even a<br \/>\nsemi-finalist in the competition reflects future success.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re great students,\u201d Polonowski said. \u201cThey\u2019re heavily<br \/>\ninvolved in the school community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>About 15,000 of the semi-finalists will advance to finalist<br \/>\nlevel, which the students will find out about in February.
