On June 4, 2004, Ann Heckman was cleaning out Granby
\nElementary School for summer break when an announcement came over the
\nloudspeaker. It told her and the other teachers in the building to evacuate
\nbecause of a bulldozer tearing through the town.<\/p>\n

Heckman and other longtime locals recalled the infamous day of Marvin Heemeyer\u2019s rampage through Granby after seeing a new documentary about the incident Friday at The Foundry Cinema & Bowl.<\/p>\n

\u201cTREAD,\u201d a documentary film directed by Paul Solet, saw a sold-out
\naudience for the 7:30 p.m. showing. For Heckman, who has lived near Granby for
\n37 years, the film told a part of the story she hadn\u2019t considered before.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought it was wonderful,\u201d she said of the documentary. \u201cIt was very interesting and provocative. It opened up a lot of questions that I never really had even though we lived here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Heckman attended that showing and the following Q&A with
\nPatrick Brower. Brower\u2019s book, \u201cKILLDOZER: The True Story of the Colorado
\nBulldozer Rampage,\u201d was used as source material for the film. He was also a
\nconsulting producer.<\/p>\n

After the movie, audience members asked Brower further details about the incident. Questions about how long the rampage lasted (about 2.5 hours), how much damage it cause (up to $10 million according to Brower) and details about the backstory leading up to the incident.<\/p>\n

Brower tried to clear up rumors, many spun from the infamous \u201cmanifesto<\/a>\u201d recorded by Heemeyer and internet conspiracy theorists, that have been contradicted by the interviews and reporting in Brower\u2019s book.<\/p>\n

\u201cMarv is the classic unreliable narrator,\u201d Brower said. \u201cIf
\nyou just listen to his tapes and accept everything he says as the truth, then
\nof course it makes great sense what he did\u2026 He says a lot of things in there
\nthat are 15% true and then the rest is just exaggeration or flat out wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

One audience member asked Brower why he decided to write a
\nbook and consult on this film. He pointed to these misconceptions that have
\nspun into a false narrative about the rampage.<\/p>\n

\u201c(It was) all the extremely false online commentary about
\nthe event that blossomed,\u201d Brower said. \u201cMarv did a very good job of creating a
\nvery compelling myth about his role. I think that\u2019s why it resonates with so
\nmany people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another question Brower received asked about signs of mental
\nillness leading up to the rampage. While he never got any psychiatric opinions
\non the record, Brower said two of the psychologists he spoke with recommended
\nthe book \u201cThe Narcissist Next Door.\u201d<\/p>\n

Heckman, who said she didn\u2019t know much about the incidents
\nleading up to the bulldozer rampage, thought that mental illness could have
\nplayed a role.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is just a small town, yet people are hurting all
\nover,\u201d Heckman said. \u201cHere we are 16 years later and we\u2019re still uncovering
\nthis horrible blight that was going on in our community that we didn\u2019t even
\nknow about.\u201d<\/p>\n

Many of the questions asked to Brower had no answer, like whether Heemeyer was mentally ill, what his \u201cendgame\u201d could have been or how the rampage might have been prevented. From Brower\u2019s answers, it was clear he wanted to dispel the rumors that see the man as an \u201cAmerican hero.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew right away I was on the wrong side of this story,\u201d
\nBrower said. \u201cPeople want to think the government is bad. If they can find a
\nstory that they can make to look like \u2018it\u2019s OK to get back at government,\u2019 then
\nthey\u2019ll just buy into any old thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

For community members like Heckman, who were a part of the
\ncommunity before and after the tragic incident, the rampage and the documentary
\nare a reminder of the unseen in Granby.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe always saw the positive side,\u201d Heckman said. \u201cThis is a very sad side for everybody and for the community.\u201d<\/p>\n

“TREAD” will be at The Foundry for the next week with showings 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. daily plus matinees 2:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
