My childhood best friend was reading at age 3. While she made my parents ooh and ahh about her genius abilities, I enjoyed Katie reading to me. She was a great reader, and I was decent at kickball. All was right with the world until the day of a parent teacher-conference where my teacher expressed her \u201cdeep concern over the lack of my reading ability.\u201d <\/p>\n
Fast forward many moons, and I can still feel my cheeks burn at the thought of having to read. The sadness, humiliation, and frustration I felt over four decades ago still lurk around corners of my memories. But age has given me perspective, and I know I am not alone. We can hide behind our \u201cweaknesses\u201d or we can learn and grow from them.<\/p>\n
Seeking help demonstrates great strength. If you or someone you know has a hiccup or two \u2014 or a hundred \u2014 when it comes to reading, Grand County Library District can help.<\/p>\n
GCLD has a team of dedicated staff members who enjoy researching, sharing ideas, and pulling from our pasts as educators, parents, and students to compile ideas for our patrons.<\/p>\n
We have put together over 60 booklists to pique interests for all ages and reading levels. From \u201cJuvenile Titles to help Celebrate Diversity\u201d to \u201cMiddle Grade: Animal Stories\u201d to \u201cAward-Winning Novels\u201d to \u201cMs. TG\u2019s Favorite Books for 1st-3rd Graders,\u201d there is a list for you. To access these lists, go to www.gcld.org, click on catalog, and search \u201cGCLD List.\u201d You can also ask any librarian to learn how to access the lists, or to create your own list.<\/p>\n
For those learning to read or learning a new language, try reading a book while listening to the audio version. Listening to a fluent reader while following the text in a book helps build fluency skills, sight word recognition, comprehension, and makes reading more fun. After listening while following in the book, try reading aloud with the audio version. We recently had a patron check out both the CD and print versions of a book for her daughter. The child, who struggled when reading books alone, was so excited to have read an entire book that she called her grandparents to celebrate. <\/p>\n
Perhaps your child has reading recommendations from school pertaining to reading levels, genres, or Lexile measures. Our catalog system has a plethora of filters to find the ideal title. Leave the search field blank, click on \u201cGO\u201d and all items in our collection will appear. Start playing with the filters on the left. Under \u201cReading Level\u201d click \u201cPreschool\u201d and under \u201cSubject\u201d try \u201cStories in rhyme sounds.\u201d In less than a minute, you can narrow the selection from 925,922 items to 15 items. \u201cWhy Should I Walk? I Can Fly!\u201d sounds like a perfect book for my niece!<\/p>\n
For your younger ones, we invite you to come to any of our Storytime programs. We have worked with reading experts on specific ways to help little ones enjoy reading and writing. To find a Storytime, go to gcld.org and click on \u201cPrograms.\u201d <\/p>\n
