As Coloradans begin their first weekend under the statewide
\n\u201cstay-at-home\u201d order, backcountry skiers are considering the wording of the
\ngovernor\u2019s order.<\/p>\n
By 9:30 a.m. Saturday, cameras showed the Berthoud Pass
\nparking lot already filling up with skiers and riders. A popular spot for
\nbackcountry, with the closures of uphill access at Winter Park Resort and
\nothers, some backcountry organizers fear that the overcrowding at the pass
\ncould lead to further shutdowns.<\/p>\n
The Friend of Berthoud Pass, a nonprofit for the
\npreservation of the pass, reposted a statement from the Colorado Backcountry
\nSki & Snowboard group pleading recreationists to think about their actions
\nin relation to the local backcountry area.<\/p>\n
\u201cLoveland
\nand Winter Park ski areas, as well as Rocky Mountain National Park, were
\noriginally open to recreation but due to crowding had to close,\u201d the statement
\nsaid. \u201cCrowding at other areas could lead to the same thing, further adding to
\nthe stress on any remaining open areas, potentially leading to further
\nclosures.\u201d<\/p>\n
Many enthusiasts have pointed out that the executive order
\ndoes allow for recreation \u201cto
\nengage in outdoor activity, such as walking, hiking, Nordic skiing,
\nsnowshoeing, biking or running.\u201d<\/p>\n
However, on Friday, Gov. Jared Polis emphasized that recreation should take place close to home and pointed out that the pandemic \u201cis not a vacation.\u201d Backcountry representatives reflected the sentiment.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe roads throughout the state will remain open explicitly for necessary travel,\u201d the statement said. \u201cWe highly recommend you recreate within your own county.\u201d<\/p>\n
While Berthoud Pass remains open, the US Forest Service
\nclosed the warming hut and restrooms to prevent gatherings.<\/p>\n
