What should have been a semester full of senior nights, prom dances, graduation parties and final goodbyes was quickly overshadowed by a century-defining pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Losing these last months to strict public health orders, face covering mandates, a crumbling economy and series of cancellations is an experience that warrants emotions of grief and sadness, said Dr. George Brandt, a psychiatrist at Porter Adventist Hospital in Denver.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are these rituals observed in life that add a certain meaning,\u201d Brandt said. \u201cHow do you get hold of this piece that\u2019s missing? What do you fill it up with?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandt said he has noticed many of his teenage clients struggling with anxiety and depression since the pandemic began. For some, the switch to online learning and the sudden separation from friends and teachers hasn\u2019t been easy.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col\" readability=\"6\">\n<div class=\"row sd-donation sd-donation-mobile p-0\" readability=\"7\">\n<div class=\"col-xl-4 p-2\">\n<div data-bg=\"url(https:\/\/cdn.summitdaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/03\/SDN-logo-white-1.png)\" class=\"p-0 mt-2 mb-2 h-75 text-center rocket-lazyload\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.summitdaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/03\/SDN-logo-white-1.png\" class=\"logo m-0 p-0 invisible\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3 class=\"d-inline mr-3\">Support Local Journalism<\/h3>\n<p><button class=\"btn d-inline\" type=\"button\" onclick=\"handleDonationButtonClickMidArticle()\">Donate<\/button><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cFor those that suffer from anxiety and depression, being in the home has initially felt secure and isolating,\u201d Brandt said. \u201cBut they don\u2019t know how to come back out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For some seniors, graduation\u2019s cancellation is the culmination of all of the struggles of the past few months. On Thursday, the Summit County Sheriff\u2019s office hosted a parade on Breckenridge\u2019s Main Street that brought together students, teachers and parents in a socially distant celebration.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Summit High School Parent Teacher Student Organization is also hosting a drive-in ceremony for the class of 2020. On Saturday night, students will watch their virtual commencement from their cars parked at Airport Road Satellite Parking in Breckenridge. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the commencement video will start at 8 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Summit High School senior Jeremiah Vaille said the events have made this graduation feel special and unique.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(These events are) different, but I think that\u2019s a good thing,\u201d Vaille said. \u201cWe\u2019re the first class to really have this big parade for us. It\u2019s actually really exciting for me now that it\u2019s coming up today and this weekend that we\u2019re getting these really big events.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vaille spent Thursday decorating his family\u2019s cars for the parade and getting excited for the big events to come. While many aspects of the future are uncertain, Vaille said he\u2019s still looking forward to studying civil and environmental engineering at the Colorado School of Mines, where he will also run cross country, in the fall. Vaille said the college still plans to have in-person classes, something he hopes doesn\u2019t change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m hoping I get to have my normal first semester of college. Right now, I\u2019m just looking forward to it as going back to normal life and figuring out college,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Senior Audrey Anderson said she initially felt excited about school being cancelled, but as more events moved virtual, she started to miss her friends and teachers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI realized there\u2019s so many things about high school that I took for granted,\u201d she said. \u201cJust seeing people in school and seeing your teachers and having that support, even if you didn\u2019t use it, it just being there.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Anderson watched as her graduation, prom and final competition for speech and debate moved virtual, all events that she looked forward to since she was a freshman.<\/p>\n<div class=\"p402_hide\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\">\n<div class=\"caption-container\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.summitdaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/05\/SHS2020-SDN-052320-24-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt class=\"wp-image-383794\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.summitdaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/05\/SHS2020-SDN-052320-24-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.summitdaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/05\/SHS2020-SDN-052320-24-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.summitdaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/05\/SHS2020-SDN-052320-24-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cdn.summitdaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/05\/SHS2020-SDN-052320-24-1-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/cdn.summitdaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/05\/SHS2020-SDN-052320-24-1-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"><\/p><figcaption><strong>The Summit High School class of 2020 is given the most unique graduation celebration in the form of a motorcade procession down Main Street in Breckenridge on Thursday, May 21.<\/strong><br \/><em>Liz Copan \/ <a href=\"mailto:ecopan@summitdaily.com\">ecopan@summitdaily.com<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cYou wait your turn all four years to be able to go to prom and have graduation and you watch all the other classes graduate,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was just crazy to me thinking that we weren\u2019t going to have that anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anderson agreed with Vaille, however, that the graduation events made this year feel like one the community will never forget.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe get to say that we\u2019ve done things that no other class has,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Anderson is going on to study psychology at the University of Colorado Boulder. CU Boulder hasn\u2019t canceled classes yet.
