The Colorado Rocky Mountain School climbing team wrapped up its season Feb. 22 as both the varsity boys and girls placed first at the state tournament at Eagle Climbing in Eagle. The JV girls team also placed second.
The CRMS boys took first place with its best finishers, including junior Mac Muir-Jeffries in fifth with 9.319 points, sophomore Jackson Turner in sixth with 9,114 and junior Zane Mullally with 8,444 points, which earned him 14th place. Colorado Rocky Mountain School’s team score was 26,871 followed by Denver South in second with 24,999 and Fountain Valley in third with 23,987.
The girl’s team also finished first. Senior Sonja Kainulainen was the top female climber for CRMS as she finished in third with 8,041 points. Junior Alice Amdur took 17th with 6,058, and sophomore Stella Guy Warren, senior Nicole Peirson and sophomore Willa Schendler all tied for 29th with 5,453. CRMS’s team score was 19,552, followed by Fountain Valley in second with 17,909 and Gunnison in third with 16,840.
Students representing 30 high schools from across the state gathered to compete in the state finals event.
The championship was decided over three-hour heats on 20 fresh-roped climbs and 20 boulder problems. This is the second state championship in a row for the CRMS girls, and the boys returned to the top spot after last year’s second-place finish.
