PREP ROUNDUP: Rifle’s Randy Starks strikes out 12 in complete-game win

Taking on the Basalt Longhorns Thursday at Cooper Field, the Rifle Bears rolled to a 10-0 win behind a complete-game, 12-strikeout performance from senior Randy Starks.

Starks struck out a career-high 12 hitters, allowed just one walk and two hits, giving the Bears a gem of a start in a non-league matchup against Basalt.

Behind Starks’ big night on the mound, the Rifle offense came through in a big way as senior Eddie Medina went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and four runs batted in. Junior Levi Warfel went 2-for-2 for the Bears with a run and two stolen bases, while freshman Hayden Wells went 1-for-2 with two walks, two RBIs and two stolen bases for the Bears.

Freshman Caidyn Wilcox also chipped in with a single, a walk, a run scored, one RBI, and one stolen base.

The win sees Rifle improve to 7-3 (3-1 in 4A WSL) on the season. The Bears travel to Meeker Tuesday for a non-league matchup with the Cowboys.

BASEBALL

Delta 17, Roaring Fork 6

Hosting the Delta Panthers at Ron Patch Memorial Field in Carbondale Thursday afternoon, the Roaring Fork Rams baseball team dropped a 17-6 decision to the No. 5 team in the state of Colorado in 3A.

Delta scored five runs in the first inning, one run in the second, four runs in the third, four in the fourth, and two in the fifth, while Roaring Fork scored one run in the first, four in the second, and one in the fourth.

Senior Layne Crisp tripled and singled for the Rams, scoring two runs, while senior Dawson Kuhl doubled twice and drove in two runs. Senior Kelvin Requeno added a two-run double of his own.

The loss drops Roaring Fork to 1-6 (0-1 in 3A WSL) on the season. The Rams return to action Tuesday against the Coal Ridge Titans in 3A WSL play.

Meeker 8, Grand Valley 6

Meeker 16, Grand Valley 6

Taking on the Meeker Cowboys Thursday in Parachute for a doubleheader, the Grand Valley Cardinals baseball dropped 8-6 and 16-6 decisions for the sweep.

In the Game One loss, sophomore Luke Smith and junior Brandon Radel led the Cardinals with two hits each.

In Game Two, freshman Logan Paskett and Radel recorded one hit and one run batted in each.

GIRLS SOCCER

Coal Ridge 2, Palisade 1

The Coal Ridge Titans girls soccer team came away with a 2-1 win over the visiting Palisade Bulldogs in non-league action Thursday afternoon at ‘The Pasture’ in New Castle.

Senior Alyssa Wenzel scored the first goal for the Titans, stepping in front of a cross into the box from Adrianna Vargas and tapped home the goal. Vargas then won the game for the Titans in stoppage time, taking advantage of a failed Bulldog clear, slipping home the game-winning shot.

The win sees Coal Ridge improve to 5-3-1 (1-1 in 3A WSL) on the season. Coal Ridge returns to action Saturday against the Lutheran Lions at home.
