PREP ROUNDUPS: Glenwood girls soccer shuts out Palisade 5-0; Coal Ridge girls soccer falls to Montrose 2-1

On the road Thursday afternoon at Logan’s Park in Grand Junction, the Glenwood Springs Demons girls soccer team opened the 2019 season with a bang, rolling to a 5-0 win over the host Palisade Bulldogs.

Glenwood struck just 2 minutes, 15 seconds into the game as Summer McSwain crossed the ball into the box where Sarah Helm headed home the Demons’ first goal of the season, pushing Glenwood out to an important fast start on the road.

Just over 14 minutes later, the Demons struck for the second tally of the game as Levin Thomas and McSwain teammed up to find Helm in the box, where the senior forward drilled a shot off the Palisade goalkeeper’s hands and into the net for a 2-0 Glenwood lead at 16:22.

At the 22:32 mark, Glenwood made it 3-0 as Tate Lilly found Malia Baltzer on the right wing, leading to a shot into the upper left corner of the net from Baltzer for the 3-0 lead that Glenwood took into the half.

Holding a sizeable lead on the road, Glenwood stretched its lead to 4-0 early in the second half as Reece Goluba found Lilly on a throw-in before the sophomore weaved her way to within 10 yards and fired a shot past Palisade’s keeper, putting the game well out of reach for the Bulldogs.

Thomas tacked on the final tally of the game as the senior worked from left to right and fired a shot from the center of the box low to the left of the diving Palisade keeper, leading the Demons to the 5-0 win.

Defensively, the Demons were stout, holding Palisade to just one shot on goal against sophomore goalkeeper Abby Scruton.

Glenwood (1-0) travels to Montrose Saturday for a matchup with the Indians.

GIRLS SOCCER

Montrose 2, Coal Ridge 1

Making the trip to Montrose Thursday afternoon to open the 2019 season, the Coal Ridge Titans girls soccer team stumbled in the second half, giving up a 1-0 halftime lead in a 2-1 loss to the Indians.

Alyssa Wenzel scored the game’s first goal for the Titans in the first half, finishing off a feed from Libby Tharp. But a lack of practice due to weather and a tough game to open the season led to the second half stumble for the Titans under head coach Damon Martinez.

“It was a competitive game,” said Martinez. “It was definitely our first [game of the season] and we played well despite having only three practices outdoors.”

In net, Annie Esgar stopped nine shots for the Titans.

Coal Ridge hosts Roaring Fork Saturday at 11 a.m.
