Last Wednesday, after performing a minor surgery on a four-legged friend, Dr. Rocky Mease sat down in his office soaking in the atmosphere and reflecting on his career as he logged his final few hours at Glenwood Veterinary Clinic.<\/p>\n

For nearly 20 years, Dr. Mease has been helping lower Roaring Fork Valley residents and their pets.<\/p>\n

A Western Colorado native, Mease was born and raised in Grand Junction.<\/p>\n

For Mease, the choice of a career path came later in life.<\/p>\n

He worked as a heavy equipment mechanic welder for 15 years, before deciding to go to vet school.<\/p>\n

“I just knew I didn’t want to be a mechanic the rest of my life,” Mease said.<\/p>\n

After researching different career options, he found his calling and enrolled in vet school. Mease graduated from Colorado State University in 2001.<\/p>\n

After spending a year and a half in Southern California and deciding it wasn’t for him, he came back to the Western Slope taking a job at Glenwood Veterinary Clinic in Glenwood Springs.<\/p>\n

“I wanted to live in a small community and help people with their animals,” Mease added.<\/p>\n

From November 2002 until last Wednesday, Mease followed his passion for helping sick and injured animals. <\/p>\n

“It’s been great working here. The people and clients are great,” he said.<\/p>\n

While in Glenwood, Dr. Mease specialized in small animal medicine and surgery; mostly dogs and cats.<\/p>\n

A typical day for Mease would include a morning of anywhere from two to five surgeries and dental cleaning, and an afternoon of appointments and check-ups.<\/p>\n

“The best part is being able to help people with their animals,” Mease said. “The nicest part is you get to know your clients and their families.”<\/p>\n

Mease said that, over the years, he was able to work with multiple generations of families, watching families, their children and pets grow.<\/p>\n

“It’s fun to watch him work with clients, his interaction was wonderful to see,” Veterinarian Assistant Lisa Dahmer said.<\/p>\n

With his career coming to a close, Dr. Mease hopes to enjoy more of his hobbies. He likes to be outdoors for hunting, four-wheeling and rock crawling.<\/p>\n

“I hope I can relax and not have to work,” Mease said. “I have lots of hobbies.”<\/p>\n

“We wish him the very best, and hope he comes back every now and then,” Dahmer added.<\/p>\n

As Dr. Mease looks back fondly on his career full of great memories, people and friendships, he recounts the time he performed surgery on a mountain lion.<\/p>\n

“You never know what’s going to come through the door. You have to be on your toes all the time,” Mease said with a smile. “It was never boring.”<\/p>\n
