For over three decades, Sunlight Mountain Resort and United Way Battlement to the Bells have been working in conjunction to raise money for the area.<\/p>\n

“We’ve been doing it over 30 years, and it’s a great way give back,” Sunlight General Manager Tom Hays said.<\/p>\n

“It was created to support and thank those local hard-working folks who don’t always have the money to afford a local lift ticket,” UWBB Executive Director Traci D. Gurley-Tomashosky said.<\/p>\n

Since 1983, the event has raised more than $200,000 to help UWBB support nonprofits from Aspen to Battlement Mesa focused on education, financial well-being and health, serving as “building blocks to independent, successful and satisfying lives,” according to the group’s mission.<\/p>\n

“We really feel a responsibility to our local area, to help out,” Hays added.<\/p>\n

“It’s a lot of fun. We have a theme every year,” Lawrence Bond, president of the UWBB board of directors, said.<\/p>\n

This year, it is a 1980s theme.<\/p>\n

Lifts will open at 9 a.m. with tickets set at $20. All proceeds go to the UWBB.<\/p>\n

The daylong event will include food, music and prize giveaways.<\/p>\n

There will be a kids cake eating contest at 2 p.m., an ’80s costume contest at 3 p.m., followed by the prize giveaway at 4 p.m.<\/p>\n

“We as a board are pretty active in collecting donations from local businesses for the event,” Bond said.<\/p>\n

With a good snow season, organizers are expecting a good turnout this year.<\/p>\n

Hays says one of his favorite things is the vibe of the event. “You see people that might only get out once a year, but they’re up there having fun, enjoying the day and contributing to United Way.”<\/p>\n
