{"id":1410507,"date":"2019-11-07T20:28:01","date_gmt":"2019-11-08T03:28:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/searching-for-solutions\/"},"modified":"2019-11-07T20:28:01","modified_gmt":"2019-11-08T03:28:01","slug":"searching-for-solutions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kkch\/local-news\/searching-for-solutions\/","title":{"rendered":"Searching for solutions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cWe really were looking for the Goldilocks Zone,\u201d longtime community activist Debbie Wilde said. \u201cThat sweet spot between being ambitious and realistic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">That was the tone at the Glenwood Springs City Council\u2019s work session Thursday concerning homelessness and ongoing detox efforts within the city and entire region. <\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Wilde, who served as executive director for the local nonprofit YouthZone for decades, recently partnered with the city on the issue of homelessness and the need for additional resources and detox facilities. <\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Wilde reported her initial findings to members of city staff and council, Thursday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThe whole concept of detox \u2026 is a missing gap,\u201d Wilde said. \u201cThat is where your emergency responders are getting so frustrated. We are using a lot of tools that really were not built for the purpose of trying to address this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">According to correspondence from an Oct. 28 stakeholder meeting, the Glenwood Springs Police department stated that it struggled with individuals needing detox. <\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cJails and hospitals are not appropriate [places] for detox,\u201d the correspondence stated. <\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Emergency medical responders also reported \u201cfrequently\u201d having to assist intoxicated patients lacking a safe place to get sober. <\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThe EMS wants to find a safe place for those individuals to take them to, for not only immediate care but also as a gateway to greater care,\u201d the correspondence read. <\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Additionally, of the calls received, local emergency personnel believed roughly one in five needed a detox center.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Coincidence or not, Thursday\u2019s work session occurred just days after Glenwood Springs voters overwhelmingly supported Ballot Issue 2A, which beginning Jan. 1 will impose a new sales tax of 20 cents per cigarette or $4 on a pack of 20 cigarettes sold. The passage of Ballot Issue 2A also means the assessment of a 40% sales tax on all other tobacco products including e-cigarettes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Over 60% of Glenwood voters favored the ballot issue whereas less than 40% opposed it. <\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">And, of the \u201cup to $900,000\u201d the new tax is expected to collect annually, the ballot language stated that those funds would go toward \u201cdetox facilities,\u201d among other health related assets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Councilman Rick Voorhees, who advocated for the inclusion of detox facilities in 2A\u2019s ballot language, believed it was not a Glenwood issue but instead a regional one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cIt\u2019s a Roaring Fork and Colorado River valley problem,\u201d Voorhees said. \u201cIf we can inventory some of the services that are out there, their availability and who does what \u2013 I think that would be a real advantage.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\"><span class=\"Body Copy Italic\">mabennett@postindependent.com<\/span><\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/news\/local\/searching-for-solutions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via:: Post Independent<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cWe really were looking for the Goldilocks Zone,\u201d longtime community activist Debbie Wilde said. \u201cThat sweet spot between being ambitious and realistic.\u201d That was the tone at the Glenwood Springs City Council\u2019s work session Thursday concerning homelessness and ongoing detox efforts within the city and entire region.
