2023-2024 Ski and Snowboard Club Vail Nordic Town Series kicks off

The Ski and Snowboard Club Vail Nordic Town Series returned for the 2023-2024 season on Dec. 27 at the Vail Nordic Center. Sixty-nine athletes braved fairly frigid evening temperatures for 1k, 3k, and 5k freestyle (skate) mass start races, which started at 4:30 and 5 p.m.

Haley Brewster and Rose Horning crossed the line in 11 minutes, 20.0 seconds to tie for the win in a women’s field which included multiple SSCV alumnae currently skiing at NCAA DI schools.

Both Brewster (University of Vermont) and Horning, a senior from Leadville, competed for the U.S. at the 2023 World Junior championships in Canada last winter. Molly Blakslee (Williams College), Emma Barsness (University of New Hampshire) and Adele Horning (Dartmouth) were also in the race, as was fellow former Big Green skier Sarah Hochtl.

On the boys side, William Bentley (11:16.0) snuck his ski in front of Cameron Wolfe (11:16.5) for the win as Andrew Lombardi (11:17.0) rounded out the podium. Things were tight up front, with Reiner Schmitt (11:17.5) , U.S. junior national mountain bike champion Lasse Konecny (11:18.0), former Nordic program director Dan Weiland (11:18.5), Franklin Reilly (11:19.0) and Landon Laverdiere (11:19.5) all finishing within two seconds in the fourth through eighth slots, respectively.

The four-race series continues at Maloit Park on Jan. 22 with another skate mass start. The 1k and 3k races begin at 4:30 p.m. and the 5k is at 5 p.m. Registration is day-of at the venue ($5 for the 1k and 3k and $10 for the 5k).
