Vail Comedy Show is back this week with two shows, one on Wednesday at Moe’s BBQ in Eagle and one on Thursday in Vail Village at Shakedown Bar. New York City comedian Jake Velazquez will be one of the co-headliners.
Velazquez recently spent a weekend at Comedy Works in Denver and tours the country with Jordan Jensen.
We caught up with Jake to talk about that and other topics.
Have you ever performed in the Vail Valley?
I’ve never been to Vail or really anywhere that people ski. I’m nervous I’ll be unprepared. The only jacket I have had me shivering in 45-degree weather yesterday.
Do you have a favorite Colorado comedy memory?
I featured at Comedy Works Downtown this past Memorial Day Weekend which was a blast. 6 sold-out shows and then capped off the weekend seeing LCD Sound System at Red Rocks.
You were recently a finalist in “New York’s Funniest Stand-Up” competition, how did that go?
It went great. I didn’t win so I am not the funniest in New York City but it was cool to be a part of it. I got to perform at the Hard Rock Cafe and pretend I was a big shot for a week. What more can you ask for?
What do you know about Vail Comedy Show?
A lot of people have said the shows are a blast but that’s about it. Excited to see what all the fuss is about.
Any major events coming up?
Christmas and New Years. Nothing too fun other than road dates and the usual. Wish I had more. I’m boring.
You live in New York City but tour nationally, how does Colorado compare to other markets?
Easily one of my favorite places to perform. The crowds are consistently killer and it’s a real comedy town. Love Colorado!
How would you describe your comedy?
For the most part just observational and self-deprecating. I wish it was deeper than that but I’m a shallow pit.
What is next for Jake Velazquez?
Just keep hitting the road and try to get as much stage time as possible. I have big plans for 2024. Not sure what they are yet but I know they will be big.
Vail Comedy Show returns Jan. 17-18, 2024, for shows with Alice Wetterlund from HBO’s “Silicon Valley” and “GLOW” on Netflix. Eagle native Brett Hiker, a comedian now in New York City will join the January shows with comedy pals who love pond hockey.
