Learning the trades is alive and well at Summit High School! Here’s a quick update to let the community know about a few of the new, trades-related happenings here at Summit High School.
The welding program is in its seventh year and is cranking out young people who are going into the field. We have sent a number of students to trade schools where they have become welders and mechanics. Some of them have returned to Summit County to begin their careers.
We recently started a new program called Careers in Construction with the help of a strong partnership with the Summit County Builders Association. We are teaching framing, electrical, plumbing, roofing, concrete work and green building techniques. Volunteers from local trades have donated their time and energy to come and teach lessons in their specialty. When they are done with the courses, students have the opportunity to get an internship with a number of local contractors.
On Nov. 10, Summit High’s Careers in Construction will start building a tiny home on a 32 foot by 9 foot trailer. Students will be supervised by tradespeople, but will complete the work themselves and learn a ton of new skills in the process.
The last update is that we have recently started a car club here at school. Students will learn about how to fix cars by working on them. There will also be a photo and video component to the club.
We have talked to lots of community members over the years who have been in support of more hands on learning and trades related opportunities for our young people and we could not agree more!
