The holidays are a time of giving, receiving and, in some cases, apologizing for wildly offensive lyrics. On Christmas Day, Lil Pump<\/a> and 21 Savage<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 in completely separate incidents \u2014 both addressed the backlash to their recent songs. Unfortunately, in expressing regret for their racist lyrics, it became clear both rappers would each employ a similar tactic \u2014 citing their proximity to each marginalized group \u2014 to distance themselves from the ignorant remarks.<\/p>\n

In early December, Lil Pump posted a teaser of his new song \u201cButterfly Doors\u201d on Twitter<\/a>, in which he makes derogatory comments about the Asian community and former NBA player, Yao Ming: \u201cSmokin\u2019 on dope (damn) \/ They call me Yao Ming cause my eye real low (ching chong),\u201d mockingly pulling at the sides of his eyes. Nine days later, after facing mounting backlash, Pump issued an apology on Instagram.<\/p>\n

\u201cI seen the whole thing going on on the internet and all that,\u201d Pump said. \u201cI came here to tell you from my part that I\u2019m sorry and I apologize for posting that. It was not my intentions to hurt nobody or do none of that, deadass. I got Asian homies, you know. I fuck with everybody and I got nothing against nobody. It\u2019s all love.\u201d<\/p>\n

21 Savage apologized in a similar manner for his controversial lyrics on \u201casmr:\u201d \u201cWe been gettin\u2019 that Jewish money, everything is Kosher (On God),\u201d from his latest album,\u00a0i am >\u00a0 i was<\/a><\/em>. \u201cThe Jewish people I know are very wise with there money,\u201d 21 Savage posted to Twitter<\/a>. \u201cSo that\u2019s why I said we been gettin Jewish money I never thought anyone would take offense I\u2019m sorry if I offended everybody never my intention I love all people.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lyrics entered the popular consciousness when LeBron James quoted them on Instagram<\/a>. James later apologized stating, \u201cIt definitely was not the intent, obviously, to hurt anybody.\u201d<\/p>\n
