Barack Obama<\/a> continued his annual tradition of revealing his favorite books, movies and songs of the year<\/a>, with the former president-turned-tastemaker including tracks by Cardi B, Janelle Mon\u00e1e, Prince and the Carters on his 2018 list.<\/p>\n

Obama said of his annual list, \u201cIt gives me a moment to pause and reflect on the year through the books, movies, and music that I found most thought-provoking, inspiring, or just plain loved. It also gives me a chance to highlight talented authors, artists, and storytellers \u2013 some who are household names and others who you may not have heard of before.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to Cardi B\u2019s \u201cI Like It,\u201d Mon\u00e1e\u2019s \u201cMake Me Feel,\u201d Beyonce and Jay-Z\u2019s \u201cApeshit\u201d and Prince\u2019s resurfaced Piano & A Microphone<\/em> track \u201cMary Don\u2019t You Weep,\u201d Obama\u2019s 2018 list also recognized tracks from the Grammy-nominated artist H.E.R., J. Cole, Leon Bridges and more. Obama also recognized \u201cone of the great jazz singers of all time\u201d with the late Nancy Wilson\u2019s The Great American Songbook<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Like previous years, Obama\u2019s diverse playlist spans many genres, from indie rock (Courtney Barnett\u2019s \u201cNeed a Little Time,\u201d Kurt Vile\u2019s \u201cOne Trick Ponies\u201d), country (Brandi Carlile\u2019s \u201cEvery Time I Hear That Song,\u201d Ashley McBryde\u2019s \u201cGirl Goin\u2019 Nowhere\u201d), hip-hop (Chance the Rapper\u2019s \u201cMy Own Thing,\u201d Jay Rock\u2019s \u201cWow Freestyle\u201d with Kendrick Lamar) and Africa-born artists like Fatoumata Diawara\u00a0and Jupiter & Okwess.<\/p>\n
