{"id":480360,"date":"2018-12-31T19:05:08","date_gmt":"2019-01-01T02:05:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=773938"},"modified":"2018-12-31T19:05:08","modified_gmt":"2019-01-01T02:05:08","slug":"dr-hooks-ray-sawyer-cover-of-rolling-stone-singer-dead-at-81","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kqzr\/music-news\/dr-hooks-ray-sawyer-cover-of-rolling-stone-singer-dead-at-81\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Hook\u2019s Ray Sawyer, \u2018Cover of Rolling Stone\u2019 Singer, Dead at 81"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/shutterstock_1103755j.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"\/><\/div>\n<p>Ray Sawyer, the Dr. Hook &amp; The Medicine Show member who sang the 1973 Shel Silverstein-penned hit \u201cThe Cover of \u2018Rolling Stone,&#8217;\u201d has died at the age of 81.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2018\/12\/31\/dr-hook-singer-ray-sawyer-dead-at-81\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Page Six<\/a> first reported Friday that Sawyer died in Daytona Beach, Florida following a brief illness; a representative for the band confirmed the singer\u2019s death to <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The Alabama-born Sawyer \u2013 who founded the group with Dennis Locorriere,\u00a0Billy Francis and George Cummings \u2013 was a member of Dr. Hook &amp; The Medicine Show from 1969 to 1981. A few years before the band\u2019s formation, Sawyer lost his right eye in a car accident; Sawyer wore an eyepatch that made him resemble the <em>Peter Pan<\/em> villain Captain Hook, which served as the inspiration for the Dr. Hook moniker.<\/p>\n<p>In 1970, Dr. Hook &amp; The Medicine Show\u2019s demo tapes wound up in the hands of author and songwriter Shel Silverstein, who recruited the band to become a vessel for his music: The group would turn Silverstein-written tracks like \u201cSylvia\u2019s Mother\u201d and \u201cThe Cover of \u2018Rolling Stone&#8217;\u201d into hits and released two albums of Silverstein-penned songs, 1971\u2019s <em>Dr. Hook<\/em> and 1972\u2019s <em>Sloppy Seconds<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gUjcjUF-urU?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The latter single, a tongue-in-cheek paean to the magazine and rock stardom with Sawyer on vocals, became a Top 10 single on the Billboard Hot 100 and resulted in Dr. Hook &amp; The Medicine Show, <a href=\"https:\/\/bestclassicbands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Dr-Hook-Rolling-Stone.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">in caricature form<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/doctor-hook-this-is-your-life-and-your-cover-163490\/\">receiving a <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> cover in March 1973<\/a> as well as a profile of the New Jersey-via-Alabama act. \u201cFrom unknown bar band to the cover of \u2018Rolling Stone,\u2019\u201d the profile noted of the band\u2019s sudden ascension.<\/p>\n<p>Following their Silverstein partnership, the band shortened their name to Dr. Hook and enjoyed a string of hit singles in the mid to late-Seventies, including \u201cOnly Sixteen,\u201d \u201cA Little Bit More,\u201d \u201cSexy Eyes\u201d and \u201cWhen You\u2019re in Love With a Beautiful Woman,\u201d which became a Number One hit in the United Kingdom. Bruce Springsteen also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/flashback-bruce-springsteen-opens-for-dr-hook-in-1973-62945\/\">notably served as Dr. Hook\u2019s opening act<\/a> in 1973.<\/p>\n<p>After nine albums with Dr. Hook, Sawyer left in 1983 to pursue a solo career; he previously released a self-titled solo LP in 1977. While Locorriere maintained ownership of the official Dr. Hook moniker, Sawyer toured as Dr. Hook featuring Ray Sawyer over the past few decades. However, health issues forced Sawyer to stop performing live in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Locorriere\u00a0said in a statement to <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>, \u201cAlthough I hadn\u2019t been in contact with Ray for many, many years it does not erase the fact that we were once close friends and shared an important time in both our lives.
